"Platooning" kill this years recruiting?

We went 39-1 with platooning...and it got 2 people drafted that probably would have had to come back otherwise...

the kids that see that and say "nah...i'm not down with that way..."...they can take a hike...don't need them...

Wondering if the platoon system killed this year's recruiting? Recruits probably wan't to play more than half or less of a game.

Honestly, yes. When you combine it with not winning a national title I do think it had a negative impact on recruiting.

If Kentucky had rolled to a 40-0 national title and were the talk of the sport as legends who accomplished that amazing task then Kentucky would have been positively affected by it. Instead, these kids see a bunch of high ranked recruits that have question marks around them due to minimal playing time or playing out of position (Lee) that didn't go any father in the tourney than a Wisconsin team with two Top 100 recruits and a Michigan State team that was a #7 seed with minimal elite recruits. If you sacrifice for greatness you'd better accomplish greatness.

Kids see that they could go to some other school where they'd get more playing time and still have a comparable chance of making the Final Four. Last year confirmed for them that even being one of the greatest assemblies of talent ever in the sport guarantees you nothing other than reduced opportunities to play.

Huh? Who is getting drafted thanks to platooning that would have had to come back? Cal had to offer platooning to get those kids to come to the school in the first place.

"Platooning" has hurt us in regards to recruits who have an agenda of playing 30+ minutes. Newman stated that he wanted to play PG on the college level, eventhough he has always played off the ball. The problem was there were already 2 better PG's on the squad already. Diallo stated a few weeks back that he did not want to share minutes, thus he going to play for KU. Rival recruiters used this against Cal and it worked. Through all this I have more of an appreciaition for Skal, Briscoe and Matthews, because they didn't care who was on the team, they knew if they came in and competed they would get valuable minutes.

If you don't think platooning was used against us your being naive. Plus the fact that we had a 4 star player in Booker that no one really thought was leaving as well as 2 players projected in 2nd round and 1 not expected to be drafted. I betcha opposing coaches were saying those guys are coming back. By the time it got that late in the game minds were made up. I betcha we get Brown though and to me that's the perfect compliment of players to go with who we've already got. I think coach is more comfortable playing 7 guys. I also think Cal's style will be better with quicker guards and wings.

  1. Recruits Cal is going after most of them want to play in the nba. Everything Cal does is aimed to do that. Cal runs the 1st ever nba draft camp before the season starts.
  2. Tracks each kids performance the way the nba does - PER
  3. go 38-1 very close to making history.
  4. 7 kids declare for the draft and ALL look to be selected in 1st or 2nd rounds
  5. new kids flaws were not really exposed
  6. All 7 kids were better at the end of the year compared to the beginning. Playing against talent everyday in practice.
This bunch of recruits are a little different. Some were scarred away by Skal and Briscoe. Zimm stayed home. LSU hired BS Godfather. ETC... Every opposing coach is going to do some kind of negative spin against UK. We still have 3 spots left, have Cal, and a great team all ready intact. Hope we close strong. GBB

I don't think anyone is saying that we shouldn't have platooned. Cal didn't have choice as loaded as the roster was and everyone on here is starting to figure it out that it may have slightly impacted recruiting but Cal knew that it would have an affect probably a year ago imo but....

1. He had to do it.
2. 40-0 was worth the risk of having an "off" recruiting year.
If he had played a normal rotation at the end of season of 7-9 players. He win's a championship!

We made it to the final four, it probably didn't help the talking heads talking down the platooning system all year, but hey that's what they always do, the kids waited until they announced and then started going elsewhere, like the coach says, it ain't for everyone, maybe some of them were scared of the bright lights at Rupp, and some just wanted to be the man at there school, who knows, I sure don't.
