Penn State - Notre Dame thread

What a completely horrible PI call. QB throws a floater into triple coverage and a CB makes very minimal contact on the receiver who would not have been able to make the catch and gifts PSU a TD. Horrible call in that situation.

I hate the call, but the CB just needs to turn around and at least have an eye on the ball, and that's probably not called.

Stupid risk that Franklin took. Likelihood of going 45+ yards in 44 seconds against NDs defense was very small. That deep in your own territory you play for OT. Run the ball, most likely pick up a first down, run the clock out and try to win in OT. Maybe that's why his recorded against top 10 is so abysmal - takes too many ill-advised risks.

Contact in the PI looked pretty minimal but the defender wasn't tracking the ball. More often than not the refs will throw the flag there.
True. But the CB that supposedly made contact didn't make much contact and not enough to keep the receiver from catching a ball that was well under thrown. As it turns out, Irish gonna win anyway.

Just looked if Ohio St wins they are a 7.5 point favorite against Notre Dame if Texas wins they are 2.5 point favorite. DraftKings

Flicking passes off his back foot got the PSU QB in trouble. Almost two INTs in the 4th quarter but for the ref’s PI call.

GBB!

This. Fine w the PI if the ball makes it back to that receiver. But when the pick is by a different DB 2 yards in front of the drifting away receiver…the flag shouldn’t had been thrown

Gotta love Freeman’s response to the canned “1st black CFB coach Natty game” question. All about the team.

Polar opposite response from Franklins pregame interviews openly stating that’s his goal and “hopefully this team can get me there”

I've had to correct fools on here for years that get mad at Stoops for not being aggressive inside our own 10-yard line late in the 2nd quarter.

I'm sure they were initially playing for OT but once they got the 10-yard run on 1st down they decided to try a couple passes. I didn't HATE the call. Allar's not a turnover prone QB and a turnover is the only thing that beats you in that situation. Two decent completions and you're nearing FG range and have 3 timeouts to use. He just made a terrible decision.

Franklin completely choked as he always does. They were handily winning both sides of the los. You almost have to try to lose that game, but lose they did.

Tyler Warren is a phenom. The star TE has been a key to NFL team success. I see him as a Jay Novachek kind of talent on the right team. Probably tougher than Jay and gives more of an HB potential.

So Kirby Smart has a brain fart and gifts ND a late first half TD. Then, last night Franklin makes an extremely questionable decision to try to move into FG range late and the QB throws a pick. PSU had controlled the last 15+ minutes but by running the ball. Allar was not having a good game and his horrible INT was nullified by a questionable PI call. So, the decision is to put the game in his hands with 40+ yards to go deep in your own territory? I'm not one to be overly conservative but you play for OT in that situation.

Why oh why do those hokey women sideline reporters ask these coaches the dumbest effing questions during and after the games? I think it was Molly that asked Freeman, what does this win mean to you? I would have walked away. What the hell kind of question is that? They need to do away with all sideline reporters. The coaches hate answering the stupid questions. They are an intrusion and distraction. Ridiculous.

Several thoughts:

Great 4th quarter

Penn State got every break from the refs (I bet on Penn State, but still thought the 2nd interception PI call was terrible) yet managed to lose anyway. If I was a PSU fan, would be scratching my head over that one. But, they earlier this season, they had 1st and goal from the 5 yard line and failed to score a single point TWICE in the 20-13 loss to Ohio State on PSU's home field, so maybe they are used to it by now.

Turning point was the last drive of the 1st half when the ND backup QB came in and calmly marched them to what turned out to be a rather important FG.

I did not hate the decision to try to score, especially after the 13 yard run on 4th down, had 45 seconds or so, not impossible by any means to gain another 40 yards with all your TOs left. Especially with a solid veteran QB. Just a really bad pass by Allar.

The brackets were a joke, personally think there are at least three teams in the top bracket (Oregon, Texas and Ohio State) better than the two teams that played last night.

Franklin cost his team the game, great game however.
Drew Allar cost his team the game. He needed to throw the ball away, he tried to play hero ball and got burned with a horrible throw. He got by with it 2 times as ND was called for PI and holding on picks in the ND endzone. BOTH was very questionable penalties. Allar played a terrible game, did not complete ONE pass to a WR.

Penn State should have ran the ball, if one of the RBs breaks a nice run, then adjust the play calling. Both Singleton and Allen was both running the ball well, the combined for 166 yards. If you are going to pass it, throw it to Singleton out of the backfield, play it conservative and maybe get a chunk play running it or a screen pass. Allar throwing off his back foot under pressure, to a covered Warren was stupid. He stated he just to throw it at his feet, but it sailed on him. Either way, bad decision and pretty much sealed PSU's fate. Allar was terrible all night, wildly missing on several throws, he was 12/23, slightly over 50% completion rate, 1 int. but should have been 3. He locked in on Warren all night, he never completed a pass to a WR, 7 of his 12 completions was to Warren, 84 of his 135 passing yards to Warren. He simply locked into his stud TE and did not spread the ball around to keep the defense guessing, the last play they keyed on Warren, got the pick as a result.

So ND brings in backup QB & he goes 6/7 against a top D. Way better than anything UK can put on the field. Talk about the talent gap from UK to the top. Goodness.
