I have a vague idea of the reality of this type of offensive scheme but I have a question,,,,,,, Does this require a lineman with superior agility or pulling speed or what? Is this something which should have been built through recruiting?
I guess this could be a moot point>

Zone is basically just blocking your cylinder… whoever falls in it. Its ez for OL to not see a defender enter their cylinder (tunnel vision) or be too slow because they are watching for players to block or “chase block” defenders they shouldn’t
Its not hard , but takes a lot of reps AGAINST… good competition.
Scout doesn’t always have that or give good reps.
Indy drills can only do so much

I think U of L employed an outside zone blocking scheme against us. They repeatedly ran the back laterally, well outside the tackle box, then he made a cut thru the biggest gap he saw develop. It worked for several significant gains.

Simply from the name of the scheme, I would think 340 pound road graders would not be necessary to execute the scheme.

Frankly, it caused me a little worry last year when pre-season, Coen said our O-line was larger than the O-line of the Rams. That kind of hinted that his scheme was reliant on more athleticism over size.

The running game we have relied upon allows a back to shift to the hole, but the hole is typically inside the tackle box.
