Our Freshmen are just not SEC quality

None of our players are SEC quality outside of a few. Pope did a good job with what he had, but high school recruiting a full year in hasn't been outstanding. Got fortunate with a few decent rated in state kids, but not leading for any of the stud players even though we have top 5 NIL and name recognition. We will have to tear it up in the portal to get good. Somehow Louisville went from terrible to good with a coach and the portal.
Do you actually understand basketball? Louisville is mediocre but they're in a crap conference. We're in the best, deepest conference ever. Do you understand the problem?

People complain about One and Done players..always new players every year. Get players that will be here for 3-4 years....

We get players that should be here 3-4 year. Now it's omg these guys suck there not ready to play.

If and that's a big if, if we can keep them. There worth will be measured in helping new players settle in, and practices flow smoother because Pope won't have to do all the teaching. And maybe by there junior year... They have matured physically and can contribute meaningful minutes.

2012 team, even with AD, does not win without senior Miller. Freshman Miller was no where near the level Senior Miller was. Give them time before you write them off.

Miller was big and athletic. None of these freshman have the athleticism or quickness to play at a high level.

Louisville hasn’t beaten a ranked team all season! The ACC was the absolute worst it’s ever been! Let Louisville play our schedule!

They can shoot threes ( not tonight) when wide open but they play zero defense and turn the ball over when under pressure. I hate to see it and say it. They will or should be at the end of the bench with future recruits coach Pope brings in.
49 minutes between Perry & Noah...UK will NEVER win games with them playing that much...now or when they are seniors...it just won't happen

If Krissa Robinson & Butler are playing those 3 don’t
Simple as that
But let’s not act like Oweh was not absolutely terrible tonight missing layups again at record clips

Cut the kid a break. He got his mouth busted wide open early in the game. Normal people would’ve gone to a doctor after that.

This is what I think about your post

There are VERY few freshman who are SEC quality year one..... think before you post....

I would hope that no one expected Perry and Noah to be significant contributors their freshmen year, of sophomore year for that matter.

They are in the mold of players who come into their own their JR year and then kill their Senior year. Its a throwback to the 1980's and I am 100% good with it.

They weren't expected to or even considered to play significant minutes this year and circumstances changed it. It is what it is, but they'll in 2 years they will be playing to their strengths.

Don’t give up on those guys. They are going to be good players for us eventually. They’re typical freshman. Philon and fears are at another level right now and they will be pros soon.
Teach defense and our team can reach another level. If we don't defend we will always be trying to just out score everyone in a shootout. That is a tough position on nights our threes are not falling.

The kids just aren’t very good yet. They were never supposed to play.

In the non conference they barely played and when they did they pretty much stunk even against bad teams.

67 minutes against Bama was never the plan.

Think back to the Duke game when we were fully healthy…DNP’s for Perry/Noah and 2 minutes for Chandler.

One guy escaping the scrutiny is Almonor. He’s only made a 3 point shot in 1 of our last 7 games. That has to change next weekend.

There's an adjustment to the speed and physicality of college basketball. There are maybe 10 elite freshmen in the country that excelled. I think the whole team had an adjustment to the physical nature of the SEC. I'm hoping the NCAA tournament will be officiated differently with less physical play. That will help our guys. It seemed Amari was the only guy that adjusted to the physical play.

Some of y’all may be too young to remember Pelphrey, Feldhaus, Farmer, and Ford, but look up their freshman stats. Would you say these guys were SEC quality by the time they finished?
We have got to give these guys time. They are ahead of the aforementioned players at this same stage in their careers. They will be fine.
It seems some have forgotten what building a team looks like.
I don't care if we ever recruit another one and done. But I keep hearing about recruiting non ky talent.
Talent usually moves on before we get to see it developed.
These guys will be fine.
Pel and Feldhous had to red shirt as frosh.

I commented in a thread on Almanor last week after the Missouri game that he can't be counted on.
You just have to hope he gets hot from 3 when we need it.

Pro tip: none = 0 , not a few.

I wasn't expecting much at all from any of them. They've played as much as they had out of necessity.

My hope then and even now is that Perry, Noah, and Chandler will be productive in subsequent seasons.
Agree. Here is how tough the injuries have been. UK has a 1-arm center playing the point on most possessions because the role-playing spot up shooters are not quick enough to bring it up against the best. It is what it is. Been a good season, hope Butler is healthy for NCAAT.

Perry , Noah and Chandler need to muscle up, the lack of some bulk in this league bouncing off picks effects your game. Perry's shooting is off from the effort he is giving on defense. Bulk up and do some bouncing yourself young man.

Our freshmen are freshmen and play like it. Were you expecting AD or something?
Perry is short and not the least bit athletic. There is nothing he can do about it it’s just a fact. When he is wide open he is a good shooter but he can’t create his own shot or out quick a defender. He’s a good kid but unfortunately he is out of his league here. I see more possibilities with Noah and Chandler in time.

I remember guys like Jeff Sheppard, Prince, Wayne Turner having to wait their turn before being productive. Those guys will get there, too.

I bet you weren’t very good on your high school varsity team either as a freshman?
He might be a good solid contributor at Georgetown College or another D2 school but his lack of height and athleticism are just a fact. Great kid with a lot of heart. I’m not saying he should transfer but he will get recruited over every year. I also realize that he was put in that situation because Butler, Kerr and JR were injured and would have been playing and starting if healthy.

The vast majority of freshmen in the country are not SEC quality their freshman year.
That is true and that is why they aren’t playing in the SEC. This is March it’s not like the season just started. Perry is a good kid but his lack of athleticism and size will always be a problem, Noah and Chandler have more promise.

You folks are exhausting. He will make up for some of his speed issues with experience and strength. He isn't that short, he's 6'2". Noah is slower than Travis but the same opportunity for betterment is there for him. Chandler is more athletic, much more, but I'm not sure he's a better basketball player.

At any rate, judging freshmen the way you are is a waste of time. It will be some time before we see what Travis, Trent and Collin can become. At worst though, its pretty obvious already that they will be valuable contributors coming off the bench.

You've been around for some time so I'm pretty surprised you don't see and understand the opportunity for quality growth as players by each of them.

6'2" is not 5'9". Why do you keep harping on that? Personally I'm pretty tired of athletes first, basketball second in players. Thats Cals garbage system and it doesn't work.

Perry had 2 turnovers in 30 min, Chandler had 1 in 17 min. Oweh had 5 turnovers in 21 min, and Garrison had ZERO rebounds in 16 minutes. Why are you focused on the FRESHMEN?

Just for your knowledge, Perry had 16 P5 offers and Noah had 7. Please explain.

I hope he proves me wrong but this season has not given me much hope. He can shoot good when left open but he doesn’t have good handles or athleticism. Maybe he drastically improves and I hope he does. I like him especially because he is home grown but there are thousands of players in Ky like that. I realize that he was Mr Basketball but that doesn’t always equate to UK caliber or SEC caliber players.

I will wait until they are sophomores or even juniors before I throw in a towel on these guys.

Not to stir the pot or make anyone more upset....but it wasn't any of the freshmen that led the team in turnovers.

He was a great scorer in High School. Will you feel comfortable with him starting at point guard or as the primary back up if you are trying to build a championship team?

That’s true but those guys also don’t really handle the ball. They give it right up to Amari/Oweh/Carr as they can’t do it yet. Obviously it was a bad game for Oweh and he deserves plenty of the blame.

Guys, they’re FRESHMAN! Under normal circumstances, they wouldn’t be getting this many minutes and if anyone was expecting them to come in and be immediate contributors then you’re delusional.

Chandler is very athletic but hadn’t picked up a ball in TWO years but let’s just overlook that. Perry and Noah are Kentucky kids who understand what it means to put that jersey on. You can count on them giving their all every time they hit the court. And for all of them, give it another year to see how they continue to mature physically before throwing the towel in.

Continuity, experience and added maturity will make them all better players. We also have a good class coming in and I’m confident we’ll pick up some good players in the portal. It’s silly to borderline childish to cast these guys aside given the turmoil and adversity we’ve faced in the last year. Frankly, I had little to no expectations for this year and any chance we had to make a deep tournament run vanished in January with all the injuries.

I’m more optimistic for the future of this program than I’ve been in the last 5 years. Coach Pope won’t play favorites like our previous knucklehead and if there are better options other than Perry, Noah and Chandler, then we’ll see those other guys on the floor, pure and simple. But I really believe all three of the freshman will be much better players next year: PATIENCE PLEASE!!!

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by threads like this anymore, but wow. Op is retarded.
