Our Biggest Problem

Most of our best scorers cannot defend.
Most of our best defenders cannot score.
We simply do not have enough TALENTED players who can play on both ends of the floor.
An almost unfixable problem that is clearly a major dilemma. Accordingly, we are DOOMED on poor shooting nights.

To be a high-level team, we simply HAVE to have talented players with complete skill sets. It is hard to be a top-tier team without at least four (4) who can CONSISTENTLY play on both ends of the floor ... AND hit free throws.

Not enough talent. But still we have the national player of the year and a bevy of 5-star athletes. Plenty of coaches have done far more with far less.

We looked our best or better with Reeves and Fredrick in together. So of course Cal remedied that and after that run we never saw that combo the rest the game.🤡💩🤬

Reeves 28 minutes
Fredrick had been out and might not have needed some blows. He played very well, for sure, including on defense.
Reeves cannot help you defensively much at all, but will certainly shoot the ball. He also had a decent game.

If you need four elite players on the court at all times then maybe you're not that good of a coach.

Could try zoning some to throw the other team off and protect your shooters, and scoring as much as possible. Might be better than losing at home to teams in the 250s.

I did not use the term "elite" but clearly, in my view, you need talented players that can play on both ends of the floor to win a National Championship. My post was solely to identify what I think the biggest problem this team has winning games this season ... failure to play on both ends of the floor and hit free throws.

Down the stretch to win the game 2 two weren't out there together after both playing well. When the games on the line you have to have the best guys out there. Not someone like Collins who gives us nothing.

You don't have to be elite to work hard, but you do have to work hard to be elite. It's no coincidence that greatest players in any sport are the ones that work the hardest, and that is especially true for coaches. Handing NIL money to young people just for showing up sets a bad precedent, as does handing playing time to those that aren't working the hardest to get it.

And yet Cal won’t play some zone occasionally “to win” while he has the length and athleticism to do it! He could certainly play some 2-3 and 1-3-1 to switch some things up occasionally and catch teams off guard (and mask our teams poor man-to-man — particularly Oscar)! He’s too stubborn to do it and has to prepare his players for the NBA!!??

This. Zone would be the defense for this team but we won't run it. Keep Oscar in the paint and out of pick and roll. Protects CJ and reeves.

Pretty incredible that we haven't seen it and might not see it.

Defense is a want to ability, plus we don't play man to man correctly, no rotation, very poor at fighting thru screens I could go on but why.
