If you’re performing at the Super Bowl you should speak to most of the people watching not 10%. There’s enough artist that appeal to the masses.
What makes you think Kendrick doesn’t appeal to to the masses? Will he appeal to old boomers who clutch their Led Zeppelin albums and always complain how there’s no “real music anymore”? No. But that entire stadium was singing along to multiple songs.
Kendrick is at the top of his genre and is incredibly talented. He has wide appeal. Just because he doesn’t appeal to you doesn’t mean that’s any less true. God forbid people need to be exposed to 15 minutes of music don’t like.
On Spotify last year Kendrick was the 7th most streamed artist, Not Like Is was the 2nd most streamed song, and SZA who he shared the stage with had the 7th most streamed album.

And what exactly is BS? There wasn’t single curse word in that performce. There was zero about that that was no suitable for a seven year old. It was simply rap music with dancers.
No, what was weird was how insufferably much they showed her last year …cutting to her seemingly after every other play, almost as if she were somehow a participant in the game.

Still, when the NFL fanbase had to endure the Taylor Swift stuff for the last year or two, it would have been nice to show a few reactions from her as the Chiefs got their asses whooped. But maybe I missed it.

I don’t think rap translates well to a half-time show. Seems to get poor reviews every time it’s tried (remember that excruciatingly awful Jack Harlow performance?).
Lamar could’ve given the best performance of his entire career and a huge chunk of the country still wouldn’t get it.

I sound mixing was poor, which is almost always the case for the halftime show though. Apparently the version released on YouTube afterward has better mixing, but I haven't listened. That's all I really thought was wrong with the performance. I wouldn't say I'm a massive Kendrick fan, but I'm definitely a fan and have physical copies of all his albums.
The criticism is the same old and tired criticism you see anytime there's a rap artist at the halftime show. Which was predicted by Kendrick, because the Uncle Sam character was basically telling him to be "less ghetto". If people actually paid attention they would see there was a lot of commentary within the performance about how America treats, and I'll say this in a roundabout way to avoid sensitive topics, more "urban" entertainment. And it was dead on because I've been seeing tons of that type of criticism. Someone in this very thread said it was BS and inappropriate for their seven year old, and all it was was a curse free rap performance with black people dancing in the background.
I think it would have been the same if the NFL picking a band that was VERY country, and not pop-country, without any real radio hits except for one recent song.
They probably need to make sure whoever they pick.. whether it's a Rap artist, Country or Rock band.. that whoever it is has some sort of plethora of hits and radio airtime. It's why I liked the Rihanna and Usher half time show better than Kendrick. Kendrick has more talent (I think?) and he could have done a flawless job.. but Rihanna and Usher just have so many hits that almost everyone will recognize.
Even as a Rap fan, who is admittedly at the end of his game.. I only knew half of those Kendrick songs.. Which means anyone over 45 and not Black, only knew 1, if that.
What?? No, KL doesn't appeal to the masses. Not even a little. I've kept at least one ear on rap and hip hop since I was a teenager in the 90s. KL's performance was geared to the few plugged into his crap with Drake. The performance itself was fairly dull, filled with songs that even causal fans didn't recognize. It was a 20 min long, slow, monotonous, mumbled run on sentence. If you think that appealed to the masses, you're sorely mistaken. As far as SB halftime performances go, that was a solid fail. Sure, maybe it was great for a KL concert, but in no way was that a good SB halftime show.
Ehh.. you can get all of this by having Jay-Z perform.. Or Kanye. Yes, there will still be crusty old white dudes who won't get it.. but those artists would have captured a far bigger audience.
I’m a fan of the genre and maybe a casual Lamar fan. I thought it was fine, but he’s an artist where it’s better to read along with the lyrics while listening because his dialect can be tricky.
I knew the songs, but wouldn’t expect most folks living in a place like Kentucky to know them without being fans. The Snoop/Dre/Em/50!Cent show from a few years ago is probably more my age-appropriate speed.
Live rap is one of the hardest genres to pull off, plus the fact the lyrics you heard last night weren’t the album version because of the language, so some stuff was tamed so much it didn’t really resemble its true form.

It seems to be another example of the divide in this nation. Rural vs. Urban. Red state vs. Blue state. Conservative vs. Liberal. Young vs. Old. Rich vs. Poor. It is becoming more and more prevalent as time goes by. It’s nothing new, just the divide is growing. Or maybe our awareness of the differences is growing?
I try to sympathize with people who are different than me, though it is sometimes hard when both sides want to be so confrontational.
Even a Super Bowl halftime show gives cause for people to get heated. One person insults the music because it is not what they like. The other side has to become defensive and insult the other side. I have heard derogatory terms like “boomer” thrown around at people who didn’t like the show. I’ve heard other terms thrown around at people who are defending the show/artist.
Just our nature, I guess.

I liked the passing game with him spreading the ball around and dumping Diggs--who btw just wreaks of a "Jerry Jones" splash move--getting a 30 something yr old diva who is coming off an ACL-- but James Cook was dominating that game and had 16 touches for 135 yds 2 TD's and he's not on the field or getting the ball on 3rd/4th and 1? Understand the talent of Allen and wanting him to be the focal point but the fun thing to see from Bills this year was relying more on Cook/Davis/Johnson in running game--but when it's the Playoffs--go with your #1 more as you saved up for that type of talent to be fresh/ready to be unleashed. Instead....you are left wondering what if ???
Bills need to significantly upgrade the defensive side of the ball. Again...this is McDermott's expertise and they had more ball control in their attack this year, had MVP of the league and still looked like ass when it mattered on defense. I think they still win the Ravens game even if Andrews catches the 2 pt play because I think Allen gets them in position to kick game winner but their defense didn't really create anything-it was just typical Ravens implosion you see in Postseason in the Lamar/Harbaugh era. Fumbles, dropped balls, etc...and you can't beat KC hoping they screw up, you have to take the game to them as we saw last night.

It is lyrics, but it is not really sung to a melody. It does have rhythm. But poetry also has rhythm.
Rap, in a way, is more akin to poetry. And that’s not a knock on rap.
I guess it just depends on who you ask.
I would say it is music. Some hip hop producers use live strings, keys and horns in the studio. Others use only drum machines and samples. Others use a combination of both.
And if we can call Bob Dylan a singer, rappers are vocalists at minimum. Lol
Yeah Jerry Jones ticks me off, I was a Cowboys fan because they were awesome when I was a kid but he is the dumbest owner anymore and needs to get out of the way and let his GM build a team if he would hire a real one,

This is a debate I have been curious about since rap became a musical genre when I was a teenager.
I consider Dylan more of a songwriter not a singer. But he wrote melodies and lyrics AND played guitar.so still a musician to me
I consider hip hop producers to be musicians as well. You still need a melody and groove to make a rap song. There’s always a bass line that’s either laid down on a bass guitar or using a programable drum machines. Most of the song melody is played on a keyboard in the studio.
Sometimes the beat or tempo will change mid-song. To be able to do that, you have to have a general understanding of music composition.

It is an interesting debate. I have always thought melody + groove + words = song. Delivery doesn’t matter to me. I listen to a lot of metal where the vocals are yelled, screamed or growled and rarely sang (unless I’m listening to power metal or some old school Priest/Maiden/Sabbath). Most would consider that music although there’s technically no singing.
Hip hop isn’t much different if you count a drum machine and keyboard as instruments, and as I mentioned earlier, some producers use live strings and horns in the studio.
