OT: NBA restart worries as Florida corona cases surge

It's definitely more testing causing the "spike". Sadly, the media mob will put sports in jeopardy. Just sick to my stomach thinking about a fall without football and a winter without basketball.
If more testing leads to higher positive tests, wouldn't that mean that a higher population has it and is spreading it asymptomaticly? The goal is to be as close to 1% positive tests as possible. Right now, some states are in the 20% range of positive results, breaking positive results records every day.

They are testing more in Florida, but the positivity rate is also increasing.

That being said, the median age of infected is dropping drastically, so it really isn’t anything to worry about. Could actually be a positive if it leads to some level of herd immunity.

Elderly and immune compromised should be careful. Everyone else should live their lives.

No. Asymptomatic spread appears to be very rare. People with symptoms are out congregating more, and some populations that may have been underrepresented in earlier testing are being tested more. Latino workers, for example.

The net result is that a bunch of mildly symptomatic younger people are spreading the virus around.

The fact that so many college athletes are getting it and nobody is dying let alone going to the hospital bodes well IMO. Now it might wreck your favorite team's season depending on the timing of who gets it, but the longer we go without a death or hospitalization for college athletes bodes well for seasons being played IMO. Agree that we are at the point where each individual person has to decide how to proceed. K and Roy should seriously consider staying home....

Tiny Jackson County (population 13K) had about one case for the longest time until one younger asymptomatic employee infected an entire nursing home population. Now there are 90 cases and 13 fatalities.

The problem is that people still require hospitalizations, even if you don't die. We don't want our hospitals overrun. Arizona is almost mazed out of hospital beds. I got a 25 yr old friend in perfect health who's been at home with covid for a couple of weeks and just went to the hospital yesterday for breathing problems and was admitted. Yeah he'll survive probably, this thing is no joke.

Az hospitalizations (From covid) have actually been declining in Az over the past week.
I check our numbers almost daily.
The spike in patients admitted is not all covid related.
And Az needs more beds... period.
My ex had numerous ER visits, over last 10 years. Many times we had to wait 4 -12 hrs for a bed to open
And btw
We still have 60% of ventilators still available

People need to consider that there is pent up demand for hospital services after the hospitals’ way of doing business was upended for 3 months.

As you said, hospitalization increases, in many cases, are not tied to Covid.

just not reality.

"Another record number of positive COVID-19 cases was reported by the state Friday, along with continued highs for hospitalizations, as the virus continues its escalating spread in Arizona." link

"Inpatient beds and ventilators in use for suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients hit their highest-ever numbers Thursday, according to hospital data."

"The number of in-patient hospitalizations for COVID-19 as of Friday reached 1,938, with 368 COVID-19 patients on ventilators and 546 in ICU beds, the department reported. Friday’s count of 1,164 emergency room visits for COVID-19 also set a record." link

"As hospitals face alarming numbers of COVID-19 patients and are “nearing the edge” of being overwhelmed, Akhter advised people with symptoms, such as fever and a dry cough, to visit a drive-thru testing station, or an urgent care provider if they need medicine for their symptoms". link

hospital admissions (up?) 7% link

of course all this is probably fake news. soros, clinton and bill gates paid all the journalists, editors, doctors, scientists off. all these people are wrong...the people who really know whats going on and the truth about everything are the poor people with minimal education. because they read a blog and a few MEMEs.

I’m not going to argue. I live here, I’m a healthcare provider, my ex is RN with a masters. Many physician friends and nurse practitioners
I check the Arizona department of health services site almost every day.

But YOU really know what is going on... smh
THIS is what is wrong with a lot of our country

i guess the governor doesnt know whats going on either. or maybe soros got to him as well.

"For days, as coronavirus cases climbed across the state, Arizona’s Republican governor blocked local lawmakers from being able to mandate that residents wear masks.

The mayors of Arizona’s largest cities went on national television and radio shows, pressing the governor, Doug Ducey, to give them the power to require mask-wearing in their cities if he was unwilling to mandate it statewide.

Hundreds of Arizona medical professionals sent Ducey an open letter this week, outlining the evidence that masks save lives and asking him to require citizens to wear them.

Partially bowing to pressure, Ducey announced on Wednesday that he would allow local governments to set their own mask-wearing regulations.

He confirmed in a press conference that Arizona was headed in a dangerous direction, with nearly 2,400 new coronavirus cases announced on Tuesday and another 1,800 announced on Wednesday, and hospitals reporting that intensive care units are already at more than 80% capacity." link

but yeah....i'm the problem.

Yes.
Because you are not educating yourself; and you are passing on your uninformed, misrepresented babble as gospel just TO FIT YOUR AGENDA.
Both sides have gone to shit with this kinda crap.

Have a great Father’s Day.

Normal ICU usage is between 65-75%.

Arizona breakdown is 53% non covid, 31% covid an at 84%. It’s certainly something to watch and probably the worst situation in the US - but people should know the normal capacity is in the 70s.

And we are usually short beds without a pandemic.
Roads and hospitals have not kept up with our growth. In fact, most of healthcare hasn’t. The exception is dentistry.,, throw a rock and it’ll smack two or three.

If not this fall to get back to sports with fans then when? Might as well be now or might as well be never

I'm still hopeful but I'm not kidding myself. What if an older coach like K or Roy gets sick from being around all these guys? Even Cal? They'll shut it all down immediately.

Thanks for the stats and that’s exactly the point. Arizona needs watching, so they are watching it. No need to shut down Wyoming because Arizona’s numbers are up.

In my opinion, this should have always been the path. Take great care to protect the most vulnerable communities. Allow for normal spread among communities that aren’t at particular risk of serious illness or death. Keep an eye on hotspots and commit resources to those areas as needed.

Scalpel. Not a machete.

Here's some promising news that @CatsFanGG24 posted today.

This from an article from the 20th...I had been wondering how older people were doing against the virus after all the talk from Italy and Pittsburgh about the virus being much weaker than they’d seen before:

“Coronavirus has downgraded from a "tiger to a wild cat" and could die out on its own without a vaccine, an infectious diseases specialist has claimed.

Prof Matteo Bassetti, head of the infectious diseases clinic at the Policlinico San Martino hospital in Italy, told The Telegraph that Covid-19 has been losing its virulence in the last month and patients who would have previously died are now recovering.”

Everyone is babbling and drooling over the wrong question. The real issue is whether the NBA has a plan to deal with a market that closes large venues. The chances that could happen are pretty good. Bottom line is the virus is real. It has the potential to shut down a hospital(s) in a metro area. Politicians are scared as hell in an election year. The news media sees it as a crisis not to be wasted to forward a political agenda.

End result some major city will close the doors in an NFL or NBA market. Without a well thought out response, seasons will end abruptly or not start at all.

It should be pretty clear to a decently educated mind. The science on this is still immature. It’s virulence is well above normal., it can and has disrupted infrastructure. Politicians and the media lack both the understanding and the will to react to this objectively ON BOTH SIDED OF THE AISLE!! Bottom line, anything could happen with nonessential and entertainment related services.
