OT - ESPN has lost 7 million subscribers

Smart TVs rarely have as great a range of apps as does something like a Roku (unless you have one based on the Roku software), an Amazon Fire TV, or the new Apple TV (although I must admit I haven't used the new Apple TV). And they also tend to lag way behind in adding new apps or updating the current apps. Plus you spent all that money for the smart features, but when you get a new TV you can't take it with you like you can when buying a Roku box. Unless you get a deal, can almost always get a dumb TV + Roku (or whatever one you want) for cheaper than a smart TV.

I liked ESPN a lot better way back when they aired lots of sports. But for the past decade they've gotten away from what they did well, and they became the worldwide leader in sports talk shows. Except for a dozen UK games a year I almost never watch ESPN.

Not to mention their NFL obsession, which was brought about by their fear of the NFL network. I have stopped watching the NFL all together. As sad as that is, it's just turned into the same ish week after week. Then ESPN airs it 24/7. I'm ready for the NFL to take a step back and ESPN losing its rights would help on that direction.

ESPN has also turned hella political, and they only back one side. I refuse to watch any show with these types on ESPN, so therefore I never watch. The network is a mouthpeice for their politicized ideology. I mean, his and hers has discussed social engineering. No joke. ESPN has become a cesspool.

I hope they burn.

Sling TV is awesome. Have been using it since the BETA and haven't looked back.

I've got Sling TV (Base package + Sports add-on package for $26/month), Netflix ($9/month) + Amazon Prime ($99/year, averages $9/month), and HD Antenna for ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, KET, PBS (FREE). Add in my 30Mbps $56/month and my month TV/Internet spending comes in about $90/month.

Currently, I get the TWC basic hardwire internet ~15 a month. Net cost ~less than $50 a month with roku [no premium], slingtv [sports package and basic = +5 a month], internet. I like it. My wallet likes it 2.

Berman, Stephen A., Dan Patrick, etc. are all overpaid douche-nozzles who never even played sports and now are supposed to be the experts. Berman is especially annoying. No wonder ESPN is losing subscribers.

Check out a little of Chris Berman's angry side.

WARNING! Very strong language.

I couldn't care less about ESPN except that there's a frigging surcharge for them on my cable bill. They are poison for a cable provider who are widely viewed as even worse an entity than Monsanto.

Cable? What is this cable that you speak?

I ditched mine years ago. My Roku gets the Cat's games thanks to WACB. I have never forgiven myself for paying over a 1000 per year to get commercials and religious programming from left field. Cable made me pay for people who paid them for 60 percent of the channels that contained a 100 percent of programming devoted to selling me something I could would never buy. How many variations of Home Shopping Club are their now? 50? What a business model... Oh, and then, the county TAXED me in 10 different ways for just having that stupid wire.

ESPN is the most expensive basic channel on all programming packages. From that standpoint, their drop is self-inflicted.

As many have mentioned, cable cutting is the reason for ESPN's lower subscriber count. But it's a bit of a cat and mouse game.

Cable companies are scared to death to not pay ESPN what they want, because a large percentage of remaining customers would ditch cable if ESPN went away.

There are still plenty of folks out there who haven't figured Roku out, or don't want to be bothered.

ESPN is in no hurry to go the a la cart route (as HBO has done). They think they are still making more from the passive cable customers who are locked in, than they would from the active sports fans who will always demand the programming offered only by ESPN.

Then there's the added leverage involved with the other channels owned by Disney. Like I said, cat and mouse game. And Mickey is one big mouse.

With the station is a remote with headphone jack (earbuds included) for private or late night listening. Also, a voice search in the remote.

Software apps usually doesn't stand up better than hardware. JMO

Streaming through the roku3 has been far superior than a Blu Ray player in my experience. I have mixed feelings however, when it comes to slingtv. Watching the ncaa tournament was awful. They simply could not handle the traffic. I could get about 3-4 minutes of coverage, before it would just stop. This happened virtually every game. Many, many people complained about this.

All sling tv would say, is that they were working to correct the problem. During the season, not too many hiccups. But tournament time, it was a nightmare. If it wasn't for BWO, I'd have been screwed. So, while it's cheaper than cable, it is not without it's problems.

They're getting too big and trying to do too much...kind of like Sears...

They've also started to venture outside of the arena of sports and into political and social commentary as well as the TMZ like sensationalizing and gossip...Dabbling here and there into important events and topics is fine, but it's almost become part of the regular cycle...

The world wide leader in sports needs to stick to just that...I'll flip to CNN, Fox, or MSNBC if I want to hear politics and social commentary...

I'll turn to TMZ when I want to see CC Sabathia stumbling and throwing fists outside a night club..

Tell be about Lebron's line for the game...not about the hoody and/or T-shirt he wore in support of some movement...he can do it, that's fine...I just don't need it to be broken down more in depth than the actual game analysis...

I don't need Johnny Football party updates...don't need to know about his relationship problems...

If somebody's mom or girlfriend says something on twitter...I don't give a F***...

When something like the Mizzou situation happens...I don't need around the clock coverage and for every program to report from the front lines and espouse their opinion on the matter...they can have their opinions, and if they feel so inclined to share them, they can write Op-Eds to the big newspapers...

They've gotten a little carried away with all the Oprah's Couch moments and cry your eyes out specials...sometimes it's like they go out of their way to find the most heart and gut wrenching story to fill time during Game Day...it sucks bad things happen to people especially little kids, and it's great that a coach or player signed a ball for them and invited them to practice...but I don't need to be crying my eyes out when I wake up saturday morning...give me some sports...I'll watch Oprah and Sixty Minutes when I want something more than a highlight reel and predictions for the up coming games...

Don't need to know every gay athlete...If Micheal Sam wants to share with his team and maybe announce on twitter, fine...perhaps it can go across the ticker at a dead hour...but I don't need to know who his boyfriend is, how they met, or what their families think about it...

If they want to squeeze in some extra stuff into an OTL special or ESPN 30 for 30...great...but things outside the realm of sports reporting, highlight reels, game analysis, etc do not need to be a part of the daily run down and be exhausted over and over again on every show...

and somebody needs to tell Skip to chill and not get so butt hurt over things...whenever the obligatory segment on the "Redskins" or someone used the "N word" come around he acts as if he is half native american and half african american and is personally affected by it...he get's more upset than Stephen A. when it comes to anything that can be misinterpreted as a racial issue...

Caitlyn Jenner receiving courage award may not have been so good for them either......

The issue remains that the cable companies and Internet companies are the same people.

Cut your cable, and they charge you more for Internet.

Once you pay higher Internet fees, patching together a cable subscription through sling tv is really not quite the deal it originally looks like.

I'm not saying you can't do things for less money. I'm saying that after you cobble everything together via Internet, roku, sling, online availability, and antennae, you have often gone to quite a bit of effort to get something lower quality for what is ultimately a nominal discount.

Both Dan Patrick and Stephen A. Smith were DI scholarship basketball players, so you picked pretty bad examples for your "never played sports" point there. And, oh yeah, Patrick has not been on ESPN in nearly a decade, so not sure why he's the example you're choosing here.

For more than one year (4), ATT was charging me more than $45 a month for a slow DSL line. Now, I have 8x the speed with a $15 account, roku is one time expense, my antenna is a one time expense. That leaves a few $'s to spend on slingTV. Lemmings need not apply.

Cable cutting at this point is certainly not for everyone, but I can say my "cobbling" which I listed above is costing me HALF of what I was paying for the same services before I cut the cord.

Is there some hiccups every now and then, of course, but the quality I experience is very close to what I would be getting with cable or satellite.

Best part, aside from the money I save....... I'M PAYING FOR PROGRAMMING I ACTUALLY WATCH.

Oh yea?

I use a 23 bit prestocular box router with a channeling memory. Thanks to the recent AT&T deal, my repco D1-xpr has never been so easy and cheap.........then I can focus on other things....

AT&T and Comcast provide Internet....As Comcast loses mass cable subscribers to streaming and AT&T starts losing DirecTV subscribers to streaming......, Internet costs will go up. They'll make sure to get that lost money back by jacking their internet prices up.

Don't forget about cell service, as well.

When you think about the share of wallet that ATT has compared to, say, 20 years ago, when many of us had no cell phone or Internet, it's actually somewhat staggering.

They will continue to get theirs, even if it means buying out all the competition until they dictate all the terms.

And then, there's that whole Net Neutrality white elephant sitting out there.

Tell us how you really feel. Now don't hold back. Let it out.

"BooYaa" sports smartassery is getting old fast. I know they practically made college basketball unbearable with Vitale and especially Mike Patrick. I personally would rather have 10 root canals with no anesthesia than listen to Patrick call a Duke game.

That is true, but if its not Duke or Carolina MP is a pretty good commentator.

I am pretty much done with ESPN unless they are showing a game I want to watch. They can have all of their politically correct garbage.

I don't like women play by play in a man's game. The last thing I want to see on the crawler when I am waiting for a football or basketball score is soccer scores from around the world.

I read some articles on the broadcasting industry not too long ago, and learned the fee ESPN charges for a cable company to carry them now makes up the largest single portion of most American's cable bill. So for say $40 a month one gets a huge number of stations, but the single one their paying the most for is ESPN, and a lot of people don't even care about sports. Why should they be paying for that, yet they have to in order to get the rest. ESPN could and for the most part still does command it. For now.

Streaming is the future. For me it's been the now for awhile. I know a lot are still skeptical, and it's still kind of clumsy compared to just switching channels, but the networks and some of you need to get your head out of the sand. It's been my primary form of watching TV for years. I watch what I want, when I want, and for the most part don't have to put up with ad's many of which I find insulting to my intelligence. It's a joke, but it's not that a 2 hour college basketball game has become nothing more than an 80 minute commercial with a game wedged in there somewhere. It will be the demise of TV as we now know it. They're going to have to find a better way.

It's not just ESPN. It's the whole damn industry. Guy lost his job a couple of years ago for lightheartedly making fun of a Polish player's heritage during a March Madness game. Three times he apologized during the broadcast. His partner was Mike Gminski, who said on the air "It's okay, I'm Polish. I've got your back." Haven't seen the guy since.

What upset me the most wasn't the incident, it was the reaction to it by so many on twitter. Kyle Tucker was going off on the guy, and how he should be pulled off the air immediately.

I swear to God there is a PC cult that thinks calling someone a racist or sexist name is worse than stealing something from them. One of these days we'll see a broadcast from someone's house where the homeowner is being arrested and the burglar will be interviewed, saying "I just needed some stuff to sell for my heroin addiction, and he calls me all kinds of hurtful names." And the burglar will be awarded the guy's house. That's the way we're going.

Biased reporting and politics has hit ESPN hard. If your a sports oriented chanel don't hit on politics or religion. It's to divisive

I only watch ESPN when the cats are on. Same with the SEC Network. For you guys who have ditched cable and satellite, how do you watch games???

I watch them on my computer. All of our games are streamed live. It isn't perfect but it makes me happy that ESPN isn't getting my money.

Thanks for the recommendations cord cutters. SlingTV has a deal right now if you pay for 3 months of their best of live tv service you get 50% off a Roku3, $50 off amazon fire tv, free roku stick or free chromecast stick. So for $115 with tax, I got 3 months of tv and a roku3. Currently I spend $291.00 for cable/internet. Going to cancel internet and get the new wife to sign up for the 12 month special on internet so it will reduce my costs for the next 12 months down to about $100/mth, saving me $191/month. Not too shabby. Add in the sports pack and i'm still saving $185/month with most of the channels I watch.

My only concern is the dvr portion. I saw this channel master dvr that has dual tuner antenna built in. Anyone use these or have other recommendations for DVRs? That is my wife's one big pet peeve, not being able to record shows.

To clarify, once the CEO announced the loss in subscribers, Disney the stock, took a hit of more than 25%. But if you believe in diversified entertainment, you really can't go wrong owning it. It has since rebounded more than 20% which provided a great buying opportunity.

As far as ESPN, I will support them because the SEC supports.them. Not that I'm about the listen to Steven A. Smith or watch PTI, believe me,

I love DirecTV, will never switch to streaming.

well I love money more. I can get the channels I actually watch for about $30/month vs the $100+ I'm paying now for a bunch of channels I never watch.

Good for you, LOL. As to the post I was replying to earlier, I love when people act like ther view is the only view and anyone else seeing it differently is wrong. Pretty silly.

Yep, and it's getting worse and worse, especially on campuses. The left no longer wants free speech, they want correct speech, as they define it. What someone says is far more important than what they actually do in their eyes. And the corporate world is being bullied in to caving to their demands.
