Orlando Antigua

Pope should have hired Orlando Antigua last year. I was hoping that Pope was going to retain him. Orlando is a rock solid Recruiter and we definitely need that now on our staff.

What are your thoughts on Mark Pope current staff specifically his assistant basketball coaches?

Your post made me chuckle. I imagine Pope and assistants telling these recruits "you will be able to do anything you want here. Drink sodas, kiss girls. The sky's the limit".

But if I had to guess I would guess that Mitch laud out stupid low numbers for Mark to be able to spend, and instead of cold cocking Mitch like he should have, Mark lit up his best Boy Scout smile and said, “I’ll find a way to make that work.”
Think this point is made too much without much merit so far. Up to this point the school hasn’t been able to pay. The fans do and we can’t pay enough. It isn’t as though fans don’t know how to put money into NiL. Everyone knows about the collectives.

Pope could not have kept Calipari's guy, IMHO, especially not a peer and former head coach with whom he had no major working relationship. Too much potential for mistrust and too much cultural carryover for Pope as a rising head coach to contend with. You can't risk the self-sabotage there. You have to wipe the slate clean.

I’m definitely willing to believe that because I don’t know spit about whether Mitch has any sway with the top tier boosters or whether he would if he had bigger balls. I based this off of my general sense that Mitch is a tightwad outside of when he gets star struck by a big name coach or has to ink any kind of long-term contract (then he’s a happy drunk).

If it really is the fans who need to get this done, I don’t see Big Blue Nation ever getting outspent as a fanbase, on the rank and file level, by anyone in the world. We may be poor but we got fire. Clearly we’re getting way way outspent somehow though. Maybe it really does come down to which states have a Tysons Chicken and which states don’t. If it does then yeeouch that sucks.

Uk may have the best fan base, but ky is one of the poorest states. The fans can not deliver a large enough nil to remain on top. There has to be a different plan of attack

I think once revenue sharing kicks in if people want to blame the AD for NIL, go for it. People are using a two year old point that isn’t relevant to right now. We are no different than anyone else, for now, where our boosters and fans are what pay our NIL. The AD doesn’t pay for that. The AD can help structure it but we are a knowledgeable fanbase who know about the collectives. I think I’m going to end up an anti-Mitch guy if we don’t prioritize basketball in a massive way with revenue sharing. I just like pinning the fault where it belongs. Saw a poster i respect a whole lot today go on a Mitch NIL rant and I just held my tongue, I didn’t want it to seem abrasive but that people that say that stuff -it’s meaningless. It’s like blaming the meteorologist for the rain. We are about to find out whether or not fans truly want to be the “gold standard” or not, because when the school is giving way too much money to football and all the other sports, fans will either be ok with it or demand change. By that time, I’ll be ready to fire the AD myself

Davidson has partnered with Steph Curry and Oklahoma has partnered with Trae Young as their GMs. I wonder if using NBA guys is going to become a trend. And if so, who would be good for us?

But how can the fans get things changed? Send emails to mitch? Uk has to hire someone that has absolute control of all aspects of nil. That person makes all decisions.

Don't see how those guys can handle the job. Think they were hired to donate to NIL and maybe get donors to chip in more. I think the person would need some business background to maybe even invest the nil money in short term cd's or something.

You’re not wrong. We don’t fire the AD. I’m saying I would. Obviously I can’t literally fire him. If he is deluded into thinking we are capable of being an “everything school” which is the rumor, fans will be en masse asking for him to step down when Duke and UConn start lapping us. The reason I say that is when revenue sharing kicks in, people think UConn is screwed but they couldn’t be more wrong. We get a larger tv deal but we will devote to football. What do you think UConn is gonna do? I don’t even think they have a Div 1A program. They are going to give basketball big money and they will be a threat to pass us in titles if we don’t get on the gas

Those guys are simply figureheads. Both were named assistant GM’s and are more consulting roles than day to day stuff.

I’ve mentioned him before, but Nazr Mohammed would make a terrific GM. He’s been a scout in the NBA, is currently tje Director of Team Personnel for the Thunder, was a teammate of Pope and is a beloved 2 time champion at UK. He’s PERFECT! Not sure he’d take the role, but that’s the first guy I would go to.

Have him start tomorrow. Get the ball rolling

Anyone have a Time Machine I can borrow? Just need to go back to 2009. I need to buy couple hundred dollars maybe a little more bitcoin. Would be a billionaire many times over and all our problems are solved. I’d give a billion to KY’s NiL collective. If you bought 1 dollar of Bitcoin back in 2009 its value today is a little over 100 million.

I think it's too early to really say on his assistants I do think he's got some really good ones. I do agree though I really loved Orlando and wanted him to stay but it was probably better to wash the program of anything that had to do with Calipari.

Devin Booker, Shai Alexander, Anthony Davis or like @bthaunert said I wouldn't even mind Nazr Mohammed. Heck there is even Tashaun Prince moving his way up the NBA corporate ladder that I wouldn't mind.

Bet if we spent 50% of that revenue share in basketball you’d watch the world shift quickly. Wish fans were demanding that of the administration. I’m worried we are behind multiple schools in NIL
I actually agree with this. Personally, I'm willing to throw the football program to the wolves if it means that we get elite basketball back in the bluegrass.

The football program was trash during the 90s when Kentucky was the top program in the nation in basketball.

Prince is further up the ladder than Nazr. He's the VP of Basketball Affairs for the Grizzlies. I think he has GM of an NBA team written all over him. I'm not sure he would make the move.

As for the current NBA guys, just as with Steph and Trae, those arent day-to-day guys. Those are figureheads, someone to bounce an idea off, etc.

Nazr is absolutely the answer at GM.

Where’s the richer state at the fan salary level though, that matters? Tennessee salaries are high compared to Kentucky definitely. But UT is a football school with far less fan interest in basketball comparatively. North Carolina again compares favorably, though less so than Tennessee, but inside that state it’s split between Duke and UNC, much more evenly than it’s split in Kentucky between us and Louisville, which is just a city school where there are more Kentucky fans than Louisville fans even in that city…with NC State thrown into the mix too in NC. Connecticut is one of the few schools that doesn’t seem to be outspending us so whatever they make is irrelevant. Arkansas is killing us in NIL battles. I’m supposed to believe that Arkansas fans in the trenches are richer than Kentucky fans? I’ll laugh anyone off the planet who believes that. All those rich Kansas farmers? 😂 sure. There are corporations in some of these states but that’s a different issue, which I addressed separately and you didn’t mention.

People keep throwing around how poor we Kentucky fans are. But, firstly, we are spread over way more states than just Kentucky. It’s hard to believe we are outnumbered or outpassiomed by any other fanbase. And there are schools clearly thumping us in NIL bidding who clearly don’t hold a candle to us in terms of numbers of seriously interested total fan families both inside and outside the state even with the respective fanbase tallies multiplied by average in-state salary. People may very well be oversimplifying this picture by claiming Mitch is doing it but people claiming we are losing all these NIL battles because our fanbase is just a few destitute guys wearing wifebeaters are only oversimplifying it a different way.

Antiqua was highly respected inside the UK athletics department. I do know he and Pope hit it off very well, I actually thought that he was on the verge of being retained. For whatever reason that didn't work out but I think the two of them have a great relationship.
