Kid is a Class of 2025 recruit, who graduated early so he could enroll in Spring classes. Joined the Ducks to practice with them leading up to the Rose Bowl, was on the sideline during the game and has decided to hit the transfer portal already.
I have no issues with transferring for a better opportunity…whatever that player deems is important.Maybe Ducks have a big QB coming in.
I don’t necessarily have an issue with portal.
Especially when it comes to young kids/underclassmen.
The issue historically isn’t portal and freedom of movement. The issue is expecting a 17-18 year old to make a big time commitment. Especially in context of collegiate sports where things change so much. Turnover…staff, players, etc…
Maybe this kid was led to believe something about playing at Oregon. Then he got in there and information changed.
The issue has been coaches being able to sell kids on something…playing time, scheme, “culture”, whatever…then they get in there and it’s not the brochure. But they’re locked in and can’t move until they graduate and have 1 year left.
QBs especially. They seemingly transfer more than any position. They’re most susceptible to getting screwed though just by nature/structure of the game.
In terms of playing time. Every other position except kicker/punter plays multiple people. The players further down the depth chart/rotation at any position will get special team run.
In terms of coaching/style/scheme. Again, QB more sensitive in terms how successful he can be.
So the kid burns Cal and then Oregon. In any other profession that would make someone damaged goods, but in football someone will pay him 10M to sign on. Strange days.
What if he got there and realized he had screwed up? What if he realized he didn’t like his coach? I agree it is different. The top qb last year hit the portal and transferred from Bama to OSU. Saban left was his reason but this kid could have had reasons other than more moneyI have no issues with transferring for a better opportunity…whatever that player deems is important.
This one is a little different. Kid signs with Oregon less than a month ago on national signing day, goes to a few practices and the Rose Bowl and then bolts.
Other side of the coin…better to have him leave now than later.
Again… make these NIL deals enforceable by a contract with protections built in for both parties, and some of this nonsense will get reigned in.
The portal is what allows this stuff. I feel if you fix the portal, you can fix a lot of this stuff with contracts after that. Right now it’s free agency every year.Again… make these NIL deals enforceable by a contract with protections built in for both parties, and some of this nonsense will get reigned in.
Agree, but the entities that “supposedly” offer these NIL deals don’t have any control over how the portal operates. But they could put their deals in a contract with certain obligations the player must fulfill. Sure, the portal may allow him to transfer on a whim, but that doesn’t mean they can’t impose some contractual penalties if obligations aren’t fulfilled. The portal is what allows this stuff. I feel if you fix the portal, you can fix a lot of this stuff with contracts after that. Right now it’s free agency every year.
This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. What correction needs to be made? This is the way a free society works. You have the choice of playing college football and you know what you were signing up for. A free education, free room and board, and a chance to develop your talents at state of the art training facilities, not mentioning traveling and seeing the United States on a free dime. These kids are not ENTITLED to profit sharing. If they want to go down that road, they need to pay for their education, their room and board, and they should be required to pay for the use of the training facilities and the coaches expertise for developing their skill set. This is the correction for adults making millions and millions of dollars over the last 30 years off these kids back.
One of two things….either Oregon let him know they were bringing in a starting QB thru the portal, or someone contacted him with a big offer.
Yep. Bilas pointed that out today. Don't blame the kids for leaving a small school for more money and a bigger stage because the coach would have left too. This is the correction for adults making millions and millions of dollars over the last 30 years off these kids back.

That is a shot at Stoops as well..... A&M leftover.

Thought I read a rumor that Ewers was leaving Texas for Oregon. Manning to take the reins at Texas
Wow. I didn’t realize that. Western Kentucky was way down last year and dipped another 10+ percent this year. Not surprising though. If you were a fan of one of these schools why would you bother? The problem with this logic is it cripples your G5 schools. They'll never be able to keep anyone good at their programs. I was in favor of allowing players to transfer if a coach left but under this existing system the rich just get richer. It's not surprising as a result that attendance at G5 schools is plummeting. WKU is our own backyard is a great example.
It’s true. They become minor league/small market team being feeder teams for the big boys. Basically if you do find a gem, someone with more money will just take them after he does well for a year. The problem with this logic is it cripples your G5 schools. Why? UK and many others have had guys that couldn’t make it here transfer there and do good. Yes they lose their top guys to the portal and then they add guys from the p5 to replace them. I have seen analysts saying guys (esp qbs) are smart to go there for a couple years. Get some playing time and experience. Then transfer up into a p5 starting job. Instead many sit behind a starter for 2-3 years and aren’t ready to play when it’s time. The problem with this logic is it cripples your G5 schools. It is but I think this is different. This kid is a 4 star #107 on 247. This guy is gonna set on the bench at any top school for a couple years and prob transfer then. Why would a top team pay a lot for this kid to come be their 2nd more likely 3rd string qb for 2 years. I’m more in the boat that he seen he would prob never play there and left now, instead of in 2 yearsThe back door deals going on is crazy.

For the reasons you mention (which I agree with them), I don't have an issue with allowing 1 transfer without sitting out a year b/c I'm sure the coaching staffs lie to recruits all the time. However, after the first transfer, there should be a 1 year sit out UNLESS there extenuating circumstances...which I don't think the list has to be very lengthy... (moving back home due to family issue, coach leaves, etc).
That would help some.
There's lots of rumors about Texas right now. There's rumors Ewers is going NFL or that he isn't good enough is going to Oregon or Texas A&M. There's also rumors ESPN is trying to stir of Manning going to UNC if Ewers doesn't leave.
The schedule of CFB I think will inevitably change. Has to. The structure now was designed long ago for a totally different game/business.Anything to distract Texas from their game. It was really stupid to let this early portal stuff happen and have a playoff afterward/during.
-They need to move the regular season to Spring, or just half of it.
-Play the first half until mid October and finish the season in the spring, March to mid April.
-Have the playoffs and bowl games in late April and early May.
-Have spring football in the summer.
-Have S&C/Rehab from October-February.
-Move the draft to late July.
-Instead of signing day/recruiting, they need a draft process for the P5, also in July.
-Players register for the conference they want to play in.
-They can make visits as they do now, except official visits go up to 12 possible with the intent on choosing a conference more than the team itself.
-They're evaluated for NIL and positional value pre draft and assigned that value.
-They get bumps to their contracts depending on what order they go in the draft.
-Teams draft them all, then the contracts are signed.
-The next week or two is trading. Teams buy the player's contracts, and players can decide if they want to leave or stay.
-Franchise tags can be placed on certain players. This can either prevent them leaving or add a dollar value to the school for their contract buyout which must be met for sale of contract.
Now it's all sorted

I agree with that, but doubt he came to that conclusion by himself. It is more likely somebody at Cal said the same thing and threw money in to boot.It is but I think this is different.
