It is bothersome that players choose not to play in bowl games. It gives the impression you have quit on your team. Is there a solution? Should kids be required to pay back a year’s tuition? Just seeking some discussion here.

I’m afraid it will get worse. With the Iowa player getting injured (don’t remember his name) and the Ole Miss quarterback getting injured there were several talking heads commenting on if they should have played or not. I bet in a few years bowl games will simply be an extra game to try and get your backup players some more reps for next season. So the teams with the best players who are going to the draft will probably lose as their best players will not play. Will be used as a black eye on conferences like the SEC have so many draft picks. It will eventually start spilling over to the playoff games as well. Wait and see.

Sure it's a head scratcher going forward.....but dudes are opting out of regular season games now as well (Kelvin Joseph at UK). So the issue is where does this end period....not just the bowls.

If the players are going to opt out more and more, the NCAA need to increase roster sizes to accommodate more scholarship depth, or expand the 4 game redshirt rule to also include all post-season games. Players can get hurt walking to practice, driving a car, or celebrating. It's part of life and part of the game.

All I know is you’re no more likely to get injured in your last regular season game than you are in the bowl game. So what’s the difference?

there’s a question for discussion

Of course their are players who play in bowls and up their stock. I'm sure Bully going up against the top center in the country was looked at by scouts.
Robinson I'm sure improved his stock with the way he played. You can have a great game against legit competition on a national stage and really improve your draft status... or hurt it.

Hahaha sure right after they make Brian Kelly pay back a years salary for dumping his team & players bowl game for his new job. Or Lincoln Riley. Or Mario Cristobal.

Its ESPN fault, they got the CFB playoff and formatted all CFB discussion on the 2 semis & the 4 teams....making everything else irrelevant and pointless, even former big-time games like Rose & Sugar & Peach.

Somevseem.to think expanded playoff is the answer....if I'm a 1st rounder on 10, 11, 12 why am I sticking around to get my head beat in with virtually zero chance of winning a title? See what happens typically to the #3 & #4?

Genies out of the bottle. I expect more guys to opt out of entire Jr year like the LSU reciever who is with the Bengals.

Anybody see Herbstreit's comment over the weekend? Something like "Today's player doesn't love football." Could be right I guess or Herbie could be butt hurt over 4 Buckeyes hauling ass out of the Rose Bowl.

I don't think they need to increase scholarship allotment / roster size as there aren't enough players opting out for the NFL draft to prevent fielding a team.

The transfer portal also figures into the equation with roster limitations, but that's on the coaching staff to build depth and a culture that wants to play. Look at UK... even several guys in the portal elected to play in the bowl game. As far as transfer portal, players could use the bowl game as an audition for their future team...or their current team (if they elect to return).

They should opt out after it's apparent that your team isn't getting into the playoff. So shut it down after week 5 for most programs.

Each player’s situation is different. We have been very fortunate with opt outs in this new culture, but I couldn’t imagine being too upset if a guy gave us everything for 3-5 years takes one game off before he gets life changing money.

In four years over $100 million is generated by a football player for his university and people really want to Discuss making a player pay back .0005% because they choose to sit out one game? I don’t get that.

I mean I don’t know many people in my life that would go into work their last shit if they were about to get a raise of a few million dollars but if they make one mistake on that last shift they lose it all.

People most upset about opt outs seem to be the ones who have been covering the sport and making money for years off a system that paid these top players nothing until this season.

NIL Deals stipulating a player play in every game that player is healthy may be a solution if a company wants to fork out that much money for a bowl appearance.

Some will say that the ones that opt out are the smartest ones. The reason most play if they know they are going to be drafted pretty high IMO is they care more for other people than the ones that say 'forget my teammates.' Just think going through life caring for others makes for a better life.
