Opening acts (bands) you've seen that stole a show.

I saw Blackberry Smoke play the Mercury Ballroom last night (and as usual they were great). They had a band open for them called Temperance Movement that blew me away. One of the better live rock shows I've seen.

What other acts have you all seen and left thinking, damn that opening band was badass.

I was there as well Saturday night and I thought the exact same thing, that band ROCKED!!!!!

I saw Iron Maiden when they opened for .38 special in Knoxville (Number of the Beast tour). You could say it was a bit of a let down afterwards.

One is a shameless plug and another is a show I went to.

A band I'm in got lucky and opened for Cloud Nothings right after they got Best New Music in Pitchfork. I thought they sucked; I thought we were better.

The other time my wife and I drove to Nashville, to the Ryman, to see Grizzly Bear (one of my favorite bands) on their album release night, and a band called Unknown Mortal Orchestra opened for them and absolutely slayed. I mean, they obliterated the crowd. Poor choice of pairing by the person who booked that tour.

Back in '95 it was Fear Factory, Flotsam & Jetsom, Korn, and Megadeth at The Palace. I had never heard of Fear Factory, but they came out and kicked @$$ and took names. The lead singer and guitarist actually came out in the lobby and hung out and met people during the next two acts.

I saw The Frames open for Damien Rice and they were much better. Turns out a guy I knew that lives in Ireland was confused as to why that concert even happened. In Europe The Frames are much more popular than Damien Rice

Isn't Glen Hansard (dude from the Swell Season) the front man of the Frames?

The Beasty Boys opened for Madonna on her "Virgin Tour" back in 1985. Yeah yeah, I know...but a horny teenege boy will go where the horny teenage girls will be. The Beasty Boys were just starting to rap but I liked their on stage antics more than Madonna who you couldnt see for her male dancers. The Beasty Boys blew up the next year when they went on tour with RunDMC.

Saw Vergne Gosdin open for Randy Travis at Freedom Hall back around 87-88. Toss up.
Cinderella even with Bon Jovi
Night Ranger over Survivor
Styx over Reo Speedwagon

REO Speedwagon before a 3 Dog Night show back when they were all the rage. In Knoxville, TN of all places. Yea, I know most of you probably can't relate, but that's not the point. Stealing a show is. They did.

I saw Bon Jovi open for the Scorpions at Municipal Aud. in Nashville around 1984-85. After leaving that concert that evening there was NO doubt in my mind that they would make it BIG.

I saw Van Halen in 1982 during their Diver Down tour with After The Fire -- of "Der Kommisar" fame --opening for them in Nashville. Rocked the house. Hard. Nobody cared to see VH when ATF finished, in fact, a lot of us left.
Even if that did happen, I wouldn't have told anyone

I have a VH story. I saw them just after Hagar became their front man. The band was playing a song intro and he came out on stage last, drunk as hell, screaming into the microphone, misjudged the end of the stage and ran full on straight into the crowd - with about a 7 foot drop.

The next 2 songs were mainly him alternating between curse words, how much his leg hurt and how he thought the girl in the hotel from the night before gave him crabs.

David Lee Roth > Sammy Hagar

I don't have a particular story about an opening act blowing people away but around 1985 a friend of mine was telling me about a band he saw called Bon Jovi opening up for the Scorpions and he said people were chanting for Bon Jovi to come back.

1978 in Denver, CO. I saw Van Halen open for Black Sabbath. It was not even close. VH was awesome and Sabbath was not!

1980 in Cincinnati, OH. I saw Judas Priest open for KISS. There were little kids in face makeup there with their parents. Vendors in the aisles selling cotton candy. I got dirty looks from a grandpa in front of me when he looked back and saw me blaze up! Priest rocked the joint. They were outstanding. KISS came out and it sucked balls. My brother and I left after three songs. A true Metal band opening for a teeny-bop "rock" band. Worst pairing of bands, EVER!

I was there!! My first concert - 1978. AC/DC was >>>>> Alice Cooper but the sound quality in Rupp was/is atrocious and every one of their songs sounded very much alike ( I know, I know). Angus bouncing around for the 35 minutes or so. Bon carrying him through the crowd on his shoulders while soloing - classic. Then, Alice Cooper comes out and plays 2 or 3 songs with just the band and was great. Unfortunately, the props came out after that and we were 'treated' to dancing teeth, guillotines, etc. - just a Broadway show for the most part. Very disappointing for a first-timer.
Haha ... that's the one!
