One and Done vs Normal Player

I was browsing the thread talking about Cal having a double standard regarding certain players. I believe that thread was specifically about Willis. Right or wrong he absolutely does have a double standard and anyone who denies it it is just wearing their blue blinders. He admitted it with his own words regarding Skal. He said I am not coaching him like a one and done now but like he is a normal player. Ok Who are the normal players? Willis, Humphries, Dom, Wynward, matthews basically anyone he doesnt believe is gone after a year. He definitely has a shorter leash with these players and does not always play the player that is the best developed at this current moment or humphries would have been getting all of Skals minutes as he was light years ahead of skal with his back to the basket but he knows Humphries is not going anywhere so he can afford to let him ride the pine. I can see how this would be very discouraging to a "normal player" ie Willis last year saying he just gave up. He knew there was nothing he could do to get the minutes of the the NON Normal players. Cal may not promise any players anything but he does have a vested interest in making sure supposed one and dones are just that, one and done, to insure that the best recruits keep flowing into the program.

Certainly has a vested interest in the one and dones but over the time he's been here we've probably had significantly more transfers out than any of the other top programs.

Ok maybe im old and my memory failing but I can only think of two transfers since cal has been here.

Willis didn't deserve any minutes last year over the "non-normal" players as the better players deserve to play. He couldn't even beat out Hawkins last year once Poy got hurt. Willis was a lazy player, and finally in year 3 he has started to at least give 100% and has been rewarded with more playing time.

And big Agenda post by you not including Ulis, Poy and Lee in the normal players category. If they are still here, they are not one and dones!

He sure does. I love Cal as much as anybody but that is the truth. I know Cauley-Stein wasn't a one and done but we all knew he'd eventually get drafted. There was many times last year where I thought Marcus Lee should've got more minutes but instead played Willie 28 and 30 minutes a game and ended up with 4 points and 2 rebounds, if that.

Cause WCS is a lot better than Lee.

There is either an agenda or you do not understand the reasoning of Cal's actions.

#1 the OADs are the best players. Best players get more time longer leash on EVERY team.

#2 due to our youth, Cal must prepare these best players to be ready in March, thus they need as many reps as possible.

It's not that hard to understand.

POY and Lee were supposed to be one and done and were McD all americans Ullis also very highly rated and only not considered one and done because of his height and he was stuck behind another set of supposed one and dones that didn't make it. the twins. I was not arguing that Willis deserved minutes last year only that all players are not treated equally and with equal opportunity. Not even arguing this is wrong but it is the way it is and Cal admitted it. It is the people who deny it that are delusional.

Oh yeah cause our All American WCS really showed up in the Final Four last year with his 2 points and 5 rebounds vs Kaminsky who scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds.

WCS killed us in the last game, and disappeared at times. But he was head and shoulders better than Lee 99% of the time.

Who has denied it?

People are whining about it and the rest are saying that is big boy basketball.

Oh I understand his reasoning perfectly it is the people who deny it happens that grate on my nerves. I don't even disagree with Cal for doing it but arguing that it isn't happening is ridiculous.

The better players will always get more leeway. It's been that way in every sport on every level since the beginning of time. I don't know why this is so surprising.

If you consider the amount of playing time WCS got in his 3 years at UK, versus Lee, he didn't do any better. Matter of fact I'd take Lee as a junior this year over last year's junior WCS because of the fact Wille ALWAYS disappeared in big games.

This is very short sighted. It is easy to see how well Lee is playing now and forget how many times he was lost on offense and defense the prior 2 years.

Not to mention Lee is still not close to WCS on defense.

WCS drove me crazy on those off games but Lee was no where near as good as he is today and it was 80% mental. IMO

Lee, Poy and Ulis are normal players. Your agenda is showing again. Lee and Ulis were NEVER considered one and dones, and why Poy might have been by some dumb recruiting ranking coming in, it was clear he never was gonna be one and done once he got deeper into his frosh season.

And fine, better players get more opportunities...go figure. This happens in every sport at the major college and pro level. You are not telling us anything we didn't know. This method wins the most games...I like rewarding the better players.

I can think of 4. Poole, Dodson, Wiltjer and Harrow

Perhaps Smash thought he was posting on Peegs...?
Of those 4, only Wiltjer was a loss imho. And many on this board would disagree with me about him.

He would have been a solid bench player here in 2013-2014 and last season. Does he help us win a title? Who knows, may have hit some 3's but would have given up a ton too.

Regardless Wiltjer decided to quit so he can rack up points in a dog crap conference. Randle, Poy, Lyles, WCS, Lee, etc, aka the competition for Wiltjer if he had stayed, would all dominate on Gonzaga as well. THey chose to stay and compete.

That's my point. Lee should've got more playing time due to Willie being so inconsistent. And don't even act like Willie always played good on offense (which he hardly ever did) and even defense. That ain't being short sighted that's called telling the facts.

I always disagree with this "quit" and "refusal to compete" wording.

I played ball, had 2 sons that played. Sometimes the situation is just not right for a kid. These players owe the fans nothing. They have to make decisions for the betterment of their own futures and those of their families.

Did Sparks and Macy quit on WKU and Purdue?

Willie was a game changer on defense. Lee will never be on that level. Cal values that skill over most things wouldnt you agree?

Game changer on defense? Give me a break. Is that why Wisconsin's All American schooled our All American last year?

You want to pick one game, we all agree he didnt show up.

But again you have tunnel vision.

You have already stated he had no offensive game, yet he was a top NBA pick...why was that?

This discussion has pretty much ran its coarse, imo.

My only Agenda and every post has an agenda or it would be meaningless babble. was to point out that Cal even admitted he doesn't coach or view the players equally. He doesnt always play the best player currently again see Humphries vs Skal. Humphries now is better than Skal. Will that be so in the future most likely not. Who is getting the minutes now? Skal . Why? based on what he has produced? no. Based on he has potential to be better than humphries. So this BS cal spouts about producing gets you minutes is not always true. IF you have ther potential to great down the road you will get minutes regardless of how poorly you are currently playing. I understand why Cal does it. There are Cat fans that say he doesn't show favoritism in this way so when he basically admitted as much to the media i wanted to point it out. If you are not one of those fans then the post wasn't directed toward you.

Do all Cat fans reside here? Did I point to a specific post? I said I hear it in conversations with other cat fans. Would you like for me to record all future conversations so I have proof for an internet message board?

As an example, Murray has been pretty bad about making the hard play that results in turnovers. He should find the pine periodically for that. That said, if you have two players and one has more upside then he should get more minutes even in spite of the errors because In the end he will contribute more.

I see you are yet another long time joiner but just now posting again individual.

When you make assumptions on things people have stated it usually refers to those statements on the board here.

Hopefully #7 is better.

You may not realize this, but you could have replied in that very thread instead of starting another one on the same subject.

What are talking about? Poole, Wiltjer, and Harrow. That's it. Very short list, especially for a top program. Take a look at Duke, Kansas, Louisville, etc. over that same period.

Just off the top of my head...

KU- Royce Woolridge, Zach Peters, Conner Frankamp, Andrew White, Rio Adams, Naadir Tharpe (left program with eligibility)

Duke- Michael Gbinije, Rasheed Sulaimon, Alex Murphy, Semi Ojeleye

Louisville- Kevin Ware, Jared Swopshire, George Goode, Shaq Aaron, Anton Gill, Angel Nunez, Zach Price, Akoy Agau, Rakeem Buckles, Elisha Justice

This was a hater statement, no factual basis. You obviously are not a UK fan or you just don't pay attention to the rest of cbb.

There is a difference between a great athlete & a great basketball player. WCS was certainly the former, and just as certainly not the latter.
The one inherent problem with the OAD is that Cal has to give them a longer leash, whether deserved or not, because the one year, actually 8 month, window to get them NBA ready is so so short.

The problem with that is that over the course of a season they may not be the best players in a given week but are rewarded anyway because the ultimate goal of getting them to the league renders the method of sitting them on the bench for any extended period an unusable coaching tool.

The internet's existence makes any opinion based on 'probably' extremely suspect.

Typical 3Rex hater remarks.

"window to get them NBA ready is so so short" Not the window to get them ready for the tournament...?

"the ultimate goal of getting them to the league" Not to get them ready to help the team win at tourney time...

You really have to be a troll or stupid to not understand by now that Cal's mantra of "becoming the best player you can be" will help the team win in the tourney and you get drafted as well.

It is amazing this has to be explained so many times, but of course like I said their are trolls and dumb people.

It's called an opinion. Get over yourself.
