Casual observer, yea right. I am a die hard fan like most on here and I have been saying for a long time that Schlarman needs to go. No reason at all for us to get pushed around the way we did against an FCS school and this happens against almost every team we play regardless of opponent. So no, I don't think this is a stupid thread. I think it's justifiable criticism about a coach who is way in over his head.
The whole team was getting dominated for 3.75 quarters. Not just the OL. Congrats on watching football for awhile. But that doesnt mean you understand OL play.
No, this doesnt happen agaisnt "almost every team we play". In case you missed it, we ground out the remainder of the clock against Mizzou, EVEN THOUGH everyone on the planet knew we were going to run it every down.
This OL is far from the best. They deserve heat, along with many other players. But they dont deserve alot of the heat they catch on pass protection.
The O-line is bad. Worst area on the whole team. However, Dawson must account for this and run quick hitting counter running plays and to force their D-line to adjust. You can't run the read option when the QB is not a threat to keep it and run. Also, use some screen passes to slow down their rush. Dawson doesn't seem to adjust well in-game IMO so far.
We run these plays. The draws have been successful all season. Screen passes have been an adventure. For whatever reason, Towles usually throws these over the head of the RB. Although every time theyve been called, theyve been wide open.
Most hot throws that have been called, result in Towles holding the ball and taking a sack or getting hurried.
One would presume Towles is being coached to step up in the pocket to avoid outside pressure(if he's not that's another thread altogether). So the question becomes is he not listening to his coaches, does he panic and revert to what comes naturally or what?
Im fairly certain hes being coached to step up. You can tell because on many of the sacks hes taken, the OT looks pretty surprised/frustrated, because the OT did his job by pushing the rusher upfield. Against Mizzou, the ball came out on time. He used his mobility to step upfield, which bought him more time and let him gain yards.
It looks like a bad habit, because he reverts back to not stepping up whenever hes playing poorly.
