O-Line

I think our oline tweaks some things in the bye and play better from here out. The other thing I’ll say is Levis never throws the ball away. He would probably have half the sacks he does if he got rid of the ball quicker. If you watch Garapollo he holds the ball too. It’s a tweak that Scangarello needs to make in his coaching style

I think Will’s like Jared L in that both don’t ever want to give up on any play.
I agree. Lorenzon though had the latitude to play like that because he had little so little help. Those Lorenzon teams had no where near the talent of this roster. Levis has the tools he needs to keep the ball and pick his spots.

Only 1 against State. After a rough 1st 6 games maybe for the last 6 the O line gets it together. and Levis has learned to get rid of it, rather than swallowing sacks. I think they've also learned what tight ends can be trusted to help, and who can't.

Disappointed so far with the lack of use of all the T ends in the passing game.

Thought Upshaw would kill it in his comeback.
Certainly against MSU, it was obvious the plan was to keep Levis upright by using TEs to block and to call shorter pass plays so Levis didn't have to hold the ball. If the OL indeed took a step forward, we might see a bit more TEs in the passing game. But, I think the staff knows that the season is toast if Levis goes down for a lengthy spell. With the speed we have on the outside, I'm fine with slants and seams and the occasional go patterns. Absolutely want to minimize the double move, takes 5 seconds to get rid of the ball types of plays. That's just asking for Levis to take a pounding.

MSU early in the game was extremely effective in dumping the ball over the LOS to backs who picked up 5-8 yards (White made an adjustment and shut that down in the 2nd quarter). I'd like to see us do that vs. UT as they seem to bring a lot of blitzers at times which should leave the middle of the field open for just this type of play. A little dump off to McClain, a TE or even TR coming out of the backfield might pick up significant yardage if we catch them in a blitz.

A lot of that is because they have had to help with pass protection instead of running routes . But I must say , they have been pretty bad about missing assignments and blocks also . Maybe worse than the o linemen.

With the return of CRod defenses have to respect the run more, that helps slow down the pass rush. Also Levis not only needs to recognize that sometimes the defense wins he also needs to learn to climb the pocket. Often times he back peddles right into the edge rush when the pocket would have held long enough to get the throw off.

I am not used to seeing our OT's at times getting pushed back into the QB with the defender having their hands on our OT's helmets. Irritating letting smaller guys do that.

It's a system and talent issue We have the same QB as last year and the sack numbers have increased dramatically. I don't think Scang wants Levi's to scramble as much and it caused him to lay in the pocket longer than he did last year. Our line play has been poor though. You shouldn't be put in position to "throw" it away as much as Levi's has.

He definitely doesn’t want him to run it . He’s said as much .

We have all been spoiled the previous seasons watching NFL talent at Onpibe, esp tackle. Rough to watch guys who are still developing.

He needs to get over that for UT and UGA. If thr end result is the same, Levi’s getting crushed, he may as well do it at the end if a run vs the end of a sack. Hell, sliding is less dangerous than a sack. Let him do it five times a game, change what we’ve been doing all year.

ESPECIALLY against teams like Tenn. and Georgia. His legs are a very effective weapon, and we need every weapon we have against them .

I agree. The problem is they’re trying to showcase Will for the NFL I’m convinced. Makes me angry as f.

Tes have been huge in the pass game. Hard to believe but he's just been passed up. That's how much our talent increased. Dingle is better in the pass game in every way and only a freshman. Bates is better and Cummings too.

Agree. That's why kattis found his way to the field because he's a much better blocker.

To me it’s as much of an indictment of the coaching staff. Not only is your line not 100% and lacking talent, but refuse to utilize Levis’ legs. I think we’d easily be a 1 loss team had they just told him to get his ass moving.
You want our star QB to get crunched in the pocket and also beyond the LOS? Did Will steal your girlfriend? I mean damn.

Sacs are way, way worse than a big guy like Will running downfield getting hit. Half the time he’ll be going out of bounds or sliding anyway. He’s in much more danger standing every snap in a collapsing pocket. It’s a wonder he’s not been injured yet because of it. One bad hit from behind and he’s out. He’s already been close.

UK is better with him running. Our Oline isn’t as big of a problem with him running. He’s safer if he’s mobile. There’s only one reason to keep him stationary with all of that considered. The NFL likes to see how QB’s do from the pocket. It’s not even his bread and butter, it’s simply to help hisndraft position. I assume Stoops thinks it’s a win for him and a win for us allowing it with future recruits, but it’s not better for UK. That’s obvious.

No I’ve never met Will he doesn’t know my wife.

Has zero to do with it IMO. I don't think they have confidence in Sheron or Hogan for this season would be my guess. Will doesn't like to slide, opening him up to shoulder injuries.

Maybe. To me I see no reason not to mobilize Will some. There’s been so many opportunities for needed yards had he just ran. It’s in the plan for him to stay stationary. Seems like an NFL play imo.

I don't doubt they are working with him on his pocket presence. With the way things have went with the OLine this year, it would be easy for Will to feel the pressure and take off. Problem with that is it's too easy for Will to just abandon the play book and just become a scrambler. I'm sure there are times where Will wishes he would have scrambled, staff probably feels the same. To me it's all a part of Will learning to play the position at a high level. All just my opinion but the defense should be Will's key on when to run and when to let the play develop. I do agree with you that they aren't calling the read option for Will like they did last year in the UL game. That may change the closer it gets to the end of the season.

More likely to get hurt in the pocket than running.

That read option is lethal.

No doubt about it and Will is good at it. I just think they want his pocket awareness to grow. If he is constantly tucking and running, would be easy for him to do with the protection he's gotten thus far, he doesn't grow as a quarterback.

It can be brutal to watch this OLine struggle but it seems to me that this is another instance where Stoops is placing a another building block. He is obviously committed to running the pro set Offense and he is willing to suffer through the growing pains of it. I think next year's OLine will benefit greatly from staying the course this year and not relenting to the easy choice of just going back to what is easier. He made the decision to change the Offense, for recruiting purposes, more balance, glad he is sticking with it.

Based on last week and the way the unit responded, I'm not sure. We went back to gap and inside zone and mauled a good defense. Vs a ut 5-2 I think we'll see more of the same

There was still pin and pull and and outside zone mixed in with it. Outside Zone didn't look as polished but it will get there I think. I think part of it is CRod, he didn't look like himself last year when running the outside zone, he even a had a couple of games where he was a little disgruntled if I'm remembering correctly. I just don't see Stoops going to back to straight power with PA. No sense letting Gran go if that is the plan.

Let’s hope the bye week helps the o-line clear some things up. Tennessee blitzes a lot, so protecting Levis is crucial

Pin and pull is almost always gap scheme at least how we run it. When we call a gap play it's almost always pin/pull. Can't remember us calling any iso. Guess we did call a few dive when lining up crod at fb.

Like last year, we just abandoned outside zone as a staple. Imo we'll still sprinkle it in but we're back to firing off the ball physical football.

Is it the backs? Is it the OL? Or does it just not work in college? I think it's a combination of all. Obviously it works but i think it's majorly hindered due to only having limited practice time in college.
