North Dakota guard Eaglestaff talks about Pope and UK

Pope has said he wants a full roster, now whether that means we have 2-3 walkons, remains to be seen, I assume that will be the case, but the SEC allows for 15 scholarship players. currently we have 8 or 9 coming back (depending on Krissa) even to get to 13 that 4-5 guys right there. Now we may also take another high school kid as well, nobody knows. I trust in Pope though and IMO Eaglestaff is a take who fits this system to a tee, no matter how many you take, you make room for him to be one of them.
I would gladly welcome him but I just think there are gonan be much better players who are more efficient. And Kentucky will need guy who can defend as well.

regardless of where Kentucky ends up this was a great recruiting platform to kickoff Pope's coaching era.

Players like this kid see that he can take promising transfer portal talent and turn them into a top 20 team, sharing playing time along with a system that any player can thrive in - either you see them all as role players or none of them are.

And now Pope is elevating the program back to where these guys says it means something to play for Kentucky. Something Cal would never even consider.

I'm looking forward to the next few years.
Once Cal was on top of the world and couldn't figure out who would be the "them" in the "me against them" that fueled his motivation, he decided his only option was the program and fans. He made us the enemy against him. He is just a complete twat.

Could be just don’t see it. Pope seems like a guy who is gonna back the guys he already has
Pope has 9 spots filled for next year as of right now.
If we stay at 9, I think the max portal signings is 4.
He could take someone like the kid at Walton-Verona if he wanted to decommit like Trent.
Max Green is a wildcard don't know if he would have interest if Kriisa and Chandler are still here and you know Trent and Travis aren't going anywhere.
I don't think getting to 15 is important to Pope or any P4 coach for that matter.
It's all about how many of the 9 will return.
If we drop a couple naturally they will have to be replaced with portal players.

How many portal transfers will Pope try and sign for next season?
I think 4, maybe 5 if we don’t sign Ament. 2 stars, another strong PG/floor general to run the team like Butler, and a depth piece, then possibly a serviceable stretch 4.

PG- Transfer/Lewis/Kerr/Perry
SG- Johnson/*Eaglestaff/Chandler/Perry
SF- Oweh/Noah/Chandler
PF- (*Ament/Transfer)/Transfer/Noah
C- Garrison/Moreno

That’s 13. I think Kriisa likes the idea of returning but when he sees things start to shape out with the team he may end up deciding it’s best to transfer, and I think he’d be good in the ACC, maybe he’d go back out west to Cal or Stanford. I’d love for him to stick around and play a role next year, but I doubt we get all 6 of these guys to return in reality. I want to be wrong but I think at least one player from the current team will transfer.

I’m not going to pretend I’ve watched every North Dakota game to scout him, but the numbers look more like a volume shooter. He’s taking 15 shots per game with good not great percentages (36% from 3, 42% overall).

Now some of that may be that he’s the only legit talent on a team that was bad enough to go 5-11 in the Summit League and tries to do too much, but it can be a little hard to separate for an amateur like myself. Good scouting and talent evaluation is more important than ever with the portal being so vital to roster building. Fortunately for us, this season suggests that Pope and his staff know what they’re doing in that regard, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt if they want this guy.
36% from 3 is considered “good” not great. It’s above the efficiency threshold where 3 beats 2 (33%). 42% overall means he’s shooting above 50% from 2…also good.

It’s also likely that his Percentages increase in a Brea type role (prob more of the JRob role tbh) where he’s only shooting when open instead of the Curry/Davidson or Trae Young/Oklahoma role where he’s having to create space and take a lot of challenged shots.

For comparison, Young was 33% from 3 and 39% overall in his 1 year at Oklahoma…but we all would take him shooting an open 3 from the corner or wing….he just shot a lot of dancing step backs and carried his team

That’s the dude I shared the other night. Dropped 51 in his conference tourney.
You old crafty fox ..... I was just about to say you'd just posted about Eaglestaff a day ago ! (great catch, but we're awesome here, so I'm not surprised)

And look at that quote : " As a coaching staff, they're THE BEST OF THE BEST"

Although I really like Obi, and I haven't seen Wilkerson, it's going to be very interesting in the off season to see what Pope puts together. Surely it'll be promising plqyers with experience he will get that fits the system and personality of the team we need. This time, given time and careful evaluation ... we could be a true behemoth coming into next year.

First I'm hearing the Wilkerson name. Gives me Reeves vibes at that size and the way he moves. He'd be a great coming off the bench for 20mpg+ if not start depending on who we got.

He shoots 19% on non-rim 2s, 51% at the rim. Neither are good

Yeah, I don't see a fit right now for all these guard/wing types with Max Green as well.

I think he can your 2nd best scorer on most night easily. If you got Wilkerson, jasper, and oweh, getting buckets won’t be a problem

Time will tell, but the question to be asked would be is Sr. Oweh, Wilkerson and Jasper better then Jr. Oweh, Robinson and Brea. I know Oweh next year would be an improvement but to replace Robinson and Brea would take an awful lot from the other 2. Damn near 25ppg.

We get those 2 and someone like Dent or Agbim out front and I'd feel really good. Maybe Eaglestaff would be cool coming in to play an Almonor role? 9th guy off the bench type guy?

Dent/Lewis/Perry
Wilkerson/Eaglestaff/Chandler
Oweh/Johnson/Noah
Lendeborg/Moreno
Ewin/Garrison

You get someone like Ament, you drop Eaglestaff of course

Dent/Lewis/Perry
Oweh/Wilkerson/Chandler
Ament/Johnson/Noah
Lendeborg/Moreno
Ewin/Garrison

That 2nd team would be insane. And we haven't even seen the tip of the iceberg of the options to come.

Wherever eaglestaff goes, he is going to be the guy or one the top options. My hope would be a PG like dent/thorthon/agbim/ or whoever, Wilkerson/eaglestaff/ magee(from Drexel), lendenborg, and then whoever at center, but they need to be a good passer

I expect Pope & staff will look closely at players, and not just at outside appearances, or just a single game or two.

Eaglestaff summary:
I like his size at 6'6.
He averaged 18.9ppg, making 46.9% 2pt, 35.9% 3pt, with almost half his shots from 3.
He shot a little better the year before (50% 2pt, 28.3% 3pt).
That scoring average is inflated a bit by 2-3 big games.
The game after he scored 51, he got just 6, 2 games before the 51 he scored 0.
In 14 of his 33 games, he made 33% or less of his 3's; in 10 games 25% or less.
So lets just say, he is "streaky".

I would be glad if Kentucky got him, but I think there are better options
Better options now, or potentially in the near future? That’s the portal conundrum… Take a player now, and risk missing out on a better player, or wait on the better player, and cross your fingers.

Seriously though, in this new era of CBB, I’d be surprised if players aren’t recruited in January.
