North Carolina's NCAA academic case stuck in holding pattern

I think they're on the 20 year plan. Then they'll claim some statute of limitations and declare the whole thing over.

If you cheat and get caught, but don't get punished by the NCAA, did you ever really cheat at all?

"It's very taxing on a lot of people for a variety of reasons," athletic director Bubba Cunningham said in an interview with The Associated Press. "It's been used against us in recruiting. It has been damaging to the reputation of the university.

That quote just shows how much Bubba and company are unwilling to accept responsibility for all the wrongdoing or even accept the depth of the wrongdoing. If I were a professor and I read the last part of that quote, I would be calling Bubba on the phone and giving him a piece of my mind.

Hey Bubba, how about saying, "Keeping athletes eligible was damaging to the reputation of the university and we are sorry for that."

Absolutely shameless bunch at Chapel Hill. The saddest part is that some bright people like Jay Bilas are towing the UNC line.

Yep, Jay and company have continued to paint UNC as victims rather than criminals. I recall the whole PJ scandal and when Jay and Vitale complained about the NCAA not acting to clear him and how that was some kind of injustice to a young man who just wanted to play bball.

That was priceless, especially since A) PJ was in a pimps car with guns and drugs, and B) UNC never tried to get him cleared in the first place.

The scummiest scum of all time.

Two things of interest for me from that article. One, unless Bubba Cunningham was careless in his wording, it is the first confirmation I've seen that the NCAA is amending the NOA.

Two, Roy's quote at the very end was very telling. He expressed his wish for a speedier conclusion but indicated that "our people are trying to do the best they can do." That seems to me to be an acknowledgment that UNC is slowing this process down.

UNC should have received post season bans and vacated wins long ago. How oblivious do you have to be to sit there and whine that your recruiting is being damaged? If the cheats win it all this year, people should storm the NCAA headquarters with torches and pitchforks and drag Emmert out by his rug.

I hope this drags out for 5 more years. Part of the torture of Damocles' Sword is the waiting...and waiting...and waiting...

At least this Associated Press writer notes the obvious -- which imbeciles like the ones haunting this board deny -- "The NCAA's notice treated issues surrounding the courses as improper benefits...No coaches were cited, but the institutional-control charge mentioned counselors using the courses to help keep at-risk athletes eligible "particularly" in football, MEN'S BASKETBALL and women's basketball. (I added the caps.)

So, there it is, insane, aluminum hatted deniers. The NCAA has charged your school with providing improper benefits to men's basketball players. WHen the entire athletic department is hit with severe sanctions, Men's Basketball will be included.

No way Jose' or is it Josey....nothing to see here....move on. They will go after Weinstein since it's his report. (This in my best per Tickle me Elmo imitation.)

Interesting comment at the end by Roy, considering he's telling recruits that nothing will happen. His words don't exactly sound like they're coming from someone who knows what's going to happen.

Also, Bubba's comments are just so typical. He's basically pointing the finger at everyone but UNC. This is a problem UNC created, and no amount of whining is going to change the fact that the cheaters brought all of this on themselves. The sense of entitlement and the total lack of self awareness in Chapel Hill is simply shocking at this point. Also, funny how he insinuates that they will continue to cooperate. All of this could have been resolved years ago if UNC actually cooperated and turned over evidence it was sitting on before the Wainstein report.

The reaction by the UNC Administration, Boards of Trustees and Governors, faculty etc has been absolutely unbelievable. I expected the Athletics people to lie and obfuscate, but I never expected the people who are supposed to put academics and student welfare first to do the same. I have truly lost all respect for that entire school. Just repugnant.

what you say is correct, but if you take into consideration the issues at UL,Ole Miss,UT and a few other places and how the NCAA has reacted then the UNC situation gets more astounding every day.
If you lump all the violations that have occurred at other schools together since the mess has been pending at UNC the collective impact of the cheating would not rise to the level of cheating at UNC.

The fact that UNC continues to delay, misdirect and deflect the half baked attempts by the NCAA to come to a conclusion in the matter should be more than enough to cause other institutions to call out the NCAA for their foot dragging and lack of timely action

The media is all to happy and eager to cover the UL scandal but will not utter a peep about UNC. Things we know so far and whatever may be uncovered at UL will not rise to the level of corruption that exists at UNC.

Nail on head.... media...which goes back to having alumni in strong powerful pulling positions like espn ceo and big time sponsors of the NCAA itself

Why can ESPN devote time to discussing 2 5th year grad students that won't get to play in the NCAAT but can't find time to talk about a generation of student-athletes that were systematically denied a fundamental education by an institution for the sole purpose of the enhancement and protection of that institutions athletic programs?

You could say the same about Louisville as well.

This whole mess has been dragged out this long to allow the NCAA and UNCheat to figure out how to hand down the least penalty possible plan and simple. The more time that passes the more it become an old story, and when the, if any punishment is handed down, everyone will look at one another and say oh yea I remember hearing something about that.

I have seen that same quote from Bubba several times previously so it is very clear that Bubba is expecting an amended NOA. Now, the next question would be whether or not Bubba is correct. He doesn't strike me as being very bright.

My hope is the reason it's taking so long for the NCAA to rule on UNC is merely because of the extent and magnitude of the improprieties.

The Syracuse stuff paled in comparison and it still took them what...2 years of investigating before they finally made a ruling(though I think Syracuse got a slap on the wrist tbh).

Ok, thanks. Hadn't seen that. Last few times I saw quotes from him it was more, "we're waiting to hear back from the NCAA and aren't really sure what's going on" type of thing.

one generation? likely goes back to the birth of the baby boomers. lol

It was you that said UNC had been formally charged with academic fraud and WOULD (not maybe) be hit with major penalties last summer - and laughed at the idea those charges could be reversed. How do you "splain away" the FACT that the NCAA, after six more months, is now considering amending that NOA? I hope they get smacked also, Preacherfan but admit it - although you speak like someone with great knowledge and authority you have little understanding at what is going on.

You are seriously off on everything you just wrote. I have no idea what your point is about "amending the NOA." But, whatever it is, it sounds clueless.

If you can tell me what the NCAA has reversed or is considering reversing, we might have a productive conversation.

ESPN is the only entity that has "amended" the NCAA findings by keeping the whole story out of the public eye.

"The Carolina Way" has become the biggest farce in all of college athletics.

Total BS by the AD. They filled Seventh Woods' head with the notion that they'll be absolutely fine, and he has nothing to worry about. Complete lack of accountability at UNC.

Preacher, I think that every time I hear something from him. He's nothing but a wind bag trying to push the blame on rogue individuals who no longer are associated. Seeing that there's a new chancellor coming to UNC, I wonder if she'll present any strong stand on cleaning up the crud that goes against the grain of ethics in universities.

UNC should be in the process of building retribution to all those who were cheated out of a legit degree. That paper that hangs on their wall should have an asterisk added to it reminding them.

And who will be the first to cry when Woods can't play in the tournament? ESPN and their skipper.

One minor correction: UNC is getting a new President and not a new chancellor. Folt is the chancellor and she would sell her own mother to protect her position according to my friend who is a tenured prof at UNC. Let's hope the new President has some ethics. Folt doesn't have any.

If they amend the NOA, it will be to add allegations. Allegations that NC added themselves (presumably to delay the ruling). No where have I seen anything that NCAA was removing any accusation.

The NCAA has essentially picked up the equivalent of an angry rabid cat and can't figure out how to put it down without getting infected and scratched badly. That's how I interpret the delay.

Exactly. It's crazy that the 90-day clock was winding down, so they self-report some obscure secondaries, 8 days before the deadline. Then, they tell NCAA that they'll get back with them in the spring.

That's crazy and sets a precedent for future cases. They should've responded and the August 10th violations become part of a new case with self-sanctions.

This was a back-handed stall tactic.
