No wonder cal is recruiting these low ranked guys

I have some tough news for you: These "low ranked guys" will all be gone after next season too regardless of whether they will get drafted.

Players first baby.

Unless we add bamba I think we're done.

You people amaze me. Do you not realize how funny it is you're bringing up a point about Cal recruiting lower ranked guys because our top ranked guys are leaving? So everybody whines when we get the best players and they leave. But everybody still whines when Cal recruits lower ranked guys who may stay awhile. This board is an insufferable oxymoron.
True. Can't please some of them no matter what. Waaaahhh our guys leave early. Waaaahhh our guys aren't good enough to leave early.

Briscoe was The Whipping Boy this season. Everyone said they wanted him to leave now that he's leaving people are bitching. Exactly as I predicted they would a couple months ago.
By everyone, I'm assuming you mean the same 20 posters who complained about him all season. At any rate, "everyone" didn't want Briscoe to leave. It was a silly statement on your part.

haha this board hated briscoe mostly all season (people said dom and mulder should start over him). in less than 12 hours and the loss of 1 guard we have went from a national title team to people acting like we wont even get an invite to the NIT. would a jr starting guard be beneficial? yes but come on y'all stop acting like chicken little

As bummed as I am about Briscoe leaving (poor decision in my opinion, but good luck to the kid, I certainly wish him nothing but the best) we have the potential to be flat out special on defense. I am not concerned at all about next season at this point. Roster isn't finalized just yet.

What I would love for Cal to find is a guy like Yante Maten was for Georgia. Maten was a three star out of high school. He developed and perfected his game and became a force in the SEC the past two seasons. We don't have to have someone as great as Maten necessarily, but what I would like to see are guys who will be older who can come off the bench and who can score hard baskets and who can play good defense. Hump played great against UNC, but all year long he was unreliable and struggled defensively, and was even pretty terrible at getting rebounds. Over the past few years we had Lee and WCS, and some amazing athletic players that gave us deep benches, but the guys had little to no ability as offensive threats. When they scored it was usually off of lobs and fast breaks. I'd love for us to develop SKJ or Hump, or Wynyard into a guy who can come into the game and give our starters a break and who we can throw the ball down low to and who consistently make good post moves and will put up a good high percentage shot. A guy who can give us about 8-10 points off of the bench by going in and posting up and being a matchup problem for other teams. Now, again, to expect us to easily find a guy who turns into Maten and scores 16ppg is unlikely and not overly realistic, but what I am really hoping for is someone who is that lower rated guy who develops a decent consistent offensive low post game.

Everyone hated briscoe. You guys talk out of both sides your mouths

Speak for yourself, I never hated Briscoe and never posted such trash as that ever. He had some bad games that we all discussed but "hated", I think that's a big too strong to say that's how people felt about him. I thought he did a fine job for the team this year and was hoping he would come back next season and play some PG for us and be that glue guy with experience to help out all the freshmen coming in. Loved his intensity and desire even if it didn't always pay off as we liked.

Cal is fine with losing 4 or 5 guys every year. However, I don't think he realized how hard it is to remain competitive when this happens. He's going to gun for top10 guys who he knows will leave, but he's now aiming his sights to guys in the 35-15 range, who may stay another year or two.

We lost who we thought we'd lose. The only surprise would be Gabriel or Hump. Losing Briscoe, Fox, Monk and maybe even Bam should be of no surprise to anyone.

Because there's absolutely nothing to base this on. We just lost Briscoe when he has ZERO reasons to even expect to be drafted. Think about that. That's insane.

What on earth gives you any impression this class will stay here? A guess?

The point some are making is if we are going to have a revolving door the freshman HAVE TO BE GREAT. You can't land 15-30 guys that leave immediately and still have a shot to win titles. If they chose to come back then that's great. Most of them are gone before they step foot on campus. That's why people have some issues right now.

I can't believe some of the fans on this board. Fans on here during the season when Briscoe was having a bad game was saying they hoped Briscoe would leave. Now that Briscoe is leaving and hiring an agent fans everywhere are now wanting him to stay. Coach Cal is out recruiting shooting guards that are Good players hitting 40% from 3 and fans are saying Cal is recruiting anyone to fill the roster. Don't understand our fans at times at all. These we 4 star players in top 100. If you remember before Cal got here Tubby Smith was consistent just binging in 3 star players and so was Gillepsie. Coach Cal is still recruiting 2 or 3 top shooting guards that as hitting 40% from 3 and we are likely to get Bamba with 1 or 2 of these shooting guards and will recruiting Knox. Are our fans at Kentucky ever satisfied? Coach Cal is making sure we have enough shooting guards on our roster next year. I am excited who we are bringing in next year and who Coach Cal is still going to bring in with a possible Bamba and 1 or 2 of these shooting guards to go with Green, Alexander, and Diallo. Shaping up to be an awesome team!

That doesn't mean everyone hated him. I certainly didn't.

Maten is not realistic.

He played a lot his first 2 seasons with UGA and was able to develop his game, not many 3*'s will get that kind of clock here early on.

I was largely using Maten as an example of someone who is extremely athletic, a good defender, and who can score on the low block. I don't mean to say we should or can easily find someone to put up anywhere near his production numbers. Still, I'd like to be able to find some 3-4 year players who can develop similar skill sets, even if they don't rise to the level of his.

I guess really I just want to see offensive consistency out of big men that have been at UK for 3-4 years. Just someone who can go out there and give us a guaranteed 7-10ppg and who we can rely on to beat other big men one on one in the post. Even if we can just get Hump consistently hitting that jumper then I'd be really happy. Just seems like over the years we haven't been able to develop a consistent post player.

I know Maten got more in-game experience, but you must also take into account that the UK backups are going against NBA talent every single day in practice. Maten is competing against guys in practice that may never sniff the NBA. So, the UK backups might not get as much run in games, but they should be getting a lot more out of practices.
