No shoot around?

So are you blaming Pope for not electing to do a shootaround? I would think him choosing not to have one meant he felt like the team was prepared after a week of practice.

I don’t blame Pope for the record, I think he’s a fantastic coach. 6 wins over Top 25 teams so far is insane.

You can refer to the questions I asked in regards to that above. What was offered to him? Was it even feasible to make whatever it was they offered? Just because Vandy said "You we have 10 minutes for you, take it or leave it?".. doesn't mean it's now on us for why we didn't do shoot around.

This is like blaming someone else for not completing your homework. DO YOUR JOB lol. It's not Kentucky's responsibility to pivot. Vandy screwed up in the first palce, that point is being missed.

OK forgive me one more question:

Are you talking about the public warmup drills as the fans are filing in or an extended practice time closed to the public?

(In my illustrious career warming the bench in single-A HS ball we typically got on a bus at 4 pm or something and arrived at the road venues 90 minutes later with just enough time to go run the normal pregame drills and get back to the locker room. )

I'm talking about whatever is normally afforded for shoot arounds. I would agree, thats about what we did in HS as well.. Maybe that's the same in D1 SEC college basketball? But whatever it is, it sounds like Kentucky wasnt afforded it.

I could be wrong here, but I believe you do a shoot around earlier in the day and then you do the basic warmup right before the game. But again, that might not be correct.

Well I think it was very dirty of Vandy to do this. I thought Vandy was better than that. Does not look well on the coach and the school.

Y’all are too much. I really can’t believe a few of you believe this was some sort of plot to get an edge. So weird.

I doubt y’all have played sports if you really believe this. I’m floored at the reactions here.

See I don't believe it was done on purpose (God, I hope not, that would be pathetic).

But I do think it was a very big screw up on Vandy's part. And it 100% had an affect on the game, otherwise, shoot arounds wouldn't exist.

Our own fans are being silly ASSUMING this was done on purpose, if that makes you feel better.

As far as I know no other school has done this. Really don't care what you think, it was a BS move by Vandy.

I bet you it was a scheduling conflict. Something else was using that court during the time. I would just like to think that the HOME team would have the decency to forgo THEIR shoot around and give the visiting team their spot to get warmed up, go over plans, etc.. as they have no where else to go, as it's not THEIR campus/Arena/city.

.. or.. do shoot arounds matter more than some let on to? Can't be both here. Because it sure seems like Vandy said "Oh we still need ours, let Kentucky adjust"

Yeah, that makes sense.

I totally agree that it was a screw up by someone at Vandy. That’s not surprising at all.

This tells me you haven't played any sports becaus you would understand that any deviance from the routine does put you off kilter. Like @LineSkiCat14 says I don't think it was done on purpose but it was poor on Vandys part to screw it up. You keep arguing the fact we offered time before or after Vandys. Ever dawn on you that didn't fit into our pre game routine and schedule? Probably not. This is no different than a restaurant messing up your steak and bringing it out and saying he acknowledge that you ordered this rare and we cooked it well done. We would like to fix it by offering you to come back to the kitchen and have you grill it.

I played golf in college and played all other sports prior to that. Somebody at VU screwed up the schedule, I don’t doubt that at all. Pope is a good coach and a high character guy. I doubt he asks UK to offer different shoot around times to VU the day before in retaliation, that doesn’t make much sense.

I’d imagine everyone is moving on from this.

While Pope won't do, doesn't mean it isn't warranted. Pope's just too nice of a guy.

It probably wouldn't look good either. Because the guy that throws the second punch is the one that gets in trouble.

But to act like 1. This isnt a big deal and 2. That we were given an opportune chance to adjust.. is laughable. It seems like you're starting to own it (not sure about the other guy).. but the way you guys started out was baffling.

Would you spend this much time here after a loss? No chance. So lame and phoney. "He's a great poster" !! Blah Blah Blah......

As far as the Vandy game the Cats melted at the ten minute mark half one and about 2 minutes left in the game. I don't think a shoot around would have fixed that.

We're really not very good once we remove 2 of our top7 players, and with a 3rd player who is clearly hobbled. What remains is not a very good roster so I'm not surprised that we lost.

Still, id rather we have a proper shoot around instead of not. It's a game where almost any team can beat any other team if they are on. A shoot around really helps get you warmed up, familiar with the arena, go over strategy.

Maybe the move by Vandy was meant to mess with their heads and maybe it worked. This team's problem is not athleticism(they've shown they can beat the best teams in the country) or shooting(UK out-rebounded Vandy and out-shot them); it mental focus. They lost because they sleepwalked though the first half and acted like Don Knotts seeing a ghost down the stretch. Neither happens if you're mentally focused.

Did any members of the media ask Pope why he declined to have a team shootaround? I’d be interested to hear his response.

I'll be impressed and genuinely grateful if there's a single person chiming in on this thread who's ever been involved in scheduling a high-major shootaround or ever gave it a moment's thought before. This sounds like complaining that the CEO rescheduled the weekly staff meeting to conflict with your dentist appointment, after the company goes on to lose a billion dollars that quarter.

If you have strong opinions on how the SEC should punish dastardly Vandy who stole away your hard-earned win, but you don't actually know how many times shootarounds are rescheduled per year.... full credit for being often wrong but never in doubt.

I'll drop it. Good to see you @Friedas_Boss . I'm a cheapskate and the other site ended the deal without notice so I'm just on free sites for the moment, "reevaluating priorities." Come say hi sometime.
From one “Hall of Famer” to another, love your work, PhilipVU94.
