No more Rock Fights

God I can’t believe we had to put up with Cal’s lame ass basketball for so long. Had almost forgotten how the game is actually played.
It wasn't just the "lame-ass" basketball but then we had to listen to him running his mouth about how we needed to accept his lame-ass methods and be happy about it while looking forward to the draft.

Will go cold in the SEC some nights and look really bad, might drop a couple by 20-25 and take some harsh criticism. I think they will be a very good and well performing team at home though! Wesleyan looked really bad and just straight up untalented, so I’m not taking much from this one. However, we did see a new style of play that looks free and unselfish, everyone looks like they understand that if they keep the ball hot they’ll get their shots and they will be open looks.

Wesleyan returned their entire team and beat Louisville last year. Obviously not high major talent but straight up untalented is an overstatement.

I wish Antonio Reeves could've played for this team.
No doubt. Pope arrived a year too late. A Sheppard, Reeves, and Robinson combo at the 1-3 last year under Pope would have been fun to watch. That could have been realistic. Shep would have definitely been here regardless of who the coach was and having his dad’s former roommate as coach definitely wouldn’t change anything. I feel like Reeves came back despite Cal being here. Robinson probably follows Pope just like he did this season.

I love playing the “what if” game. Remember last year Hunter Dickinson was the big prize in the portal. Cal tried and couldn’t get him here, but Pope might have been able to, since Dickinson probably fit Pope’s system better.

Also, Knecht would have fit the system quite well. Imagine getting those two to go with the backcourt.

A Sheppard, Reeves, Robinson, Knecht, and Dickinson starting five would have been pretty killer. That would be a good five out lineup. Defense and rebounding would have been an afterthought, but man would they light up a scoreboard.

The good news is we still had 50 paint points so it’s a nice balanced attack.

What I love is that we'll have 8 or 9 guys who have a green light to shoot the open three, and all of them can make that shot at a decent clip.

I still can't believe that over 200 D-1 schools didn't offer Almonor in the portal. He looks like a steal.
He really does, obviously we will have to see how he preforms against high major talent, but he is definitely good enough to come in and stretch the floor every night.

I fully understand and wanted Cal gone just like the rest of you all. BUT,, Rock fights ? We averaged 89 PPG last year (#2 in the nation), so we didn't have many rock fights last year. Also, it wasn't against KWC either. I get it, Cal is hated here, but lets wait and see if we average 89 PPG during the regular schedule. It was exciting to watch, but lets keep it 100, KWC is not UT, Florida, Gonzaga, Kansas, UNC, and so on. It is not that I am trying to discredit what Pope did against KWC, it is just some of you are acting like we are the Golden State Warriors during their run in the NBA. Some of you are really having trouble understanding that the team we played would not beat ANYONE of our regular season opponents coming up. You are setting yourself up for unrealistic expectations based off of blowing out a undersized and undertalented D2 team. Nothing more, nothing less, so save the backlash to my post. It was not to shit on the team or coach, but understand WHO the opponent was.

I could certainly be wrong, but when I read most posters referring to rock fights, I don't they are primarily referencing last year as that team with multiple shooters was the exception compared to many Cal teams.

It's really hard to deny that many games over the last few years under Cal were "rock fights". His offensive scheme, or lack thereof, were quite offensive many years unless he had an ELITE PG who could create from an ISO or high ball screen.

I got use to Cal not being here for the last 4 or 5 years if not longer... He was in his own world doing whatever he could to talk down to fans and praise what he did... It got where I could not stand to see him and I for sure could not stand hearing his lash out... Oh well good riddance is all I got to say...
We now have a coach that wanted to be here for all the right reasons...

I have watched a lot of last years BYU zoom offense and there will be more added. The basic concepts were shown but it was very vanilla. Each game should see more of the point center at the top initiating the offense. Good player and ball movement with multiple picks and hard cuts to the basket. This offense creates layups and when Pope gets the wings to stay deep in the corners you will see uncontested layups.
The defense has to pick their poison - help on the driver and give up an uncontested 3 or not he’ll stay with the corner shooters and give up the layup. With the center around the top of the key and shooters in each corner, this action basically takes away 3 defenders. The center will often throw to a cutter running off 1 or even 2 screens or the cutter will run himself off the center. As a defender, you either back away to not get screened and give up the 3 or try to stick with your man who then cuts to the basket for a pass and layup.
Very little one on one and dribbling for no reason. Much passing and cutting with purpose. Using offense movement to wear down the defense. Being 12 deep means that UK will always have fresh players in the game.
