No love for Levis on SEC Now

Me being honest. I didn't think his accuracy and timing warranted the hype he's receiving this year from some. I think that will be much improved this year, he's had a whole offseason that he didn't have last year to work with his guys that will be catching the ball. Saying all of that, even with his short comings at times throwing last year, he was still one of the harder Quarterbacks to defend last year. He had more than enough success throwing the ball that made his scrambling hard to defend. He should be considered among the top in the SEC.

Imo he'll play well but I understand the hesitance to crown him king in college.

I also think people get the lines blurred between his college production and NFL attention. It's understandable but two different things.

That said, I definitely think he'll show out this year

Gotta love how Spencer Rattler, who got benched in the Big 12, is suddenly going to be a world beater in the SEC.
Very true.... If he struggled in the Big 12, which he did, he's getting ready to play against corners and safeties that will be playing on Sundays. His struggles seemed to come when he was feeling pressure, that won't get better either.

Levis has physical traits that you can't teach. He LOOKS like a NFL QB. So did Christian Hackenberg. 2nd rd draft pick. Never took a snap.

Many here seem to assume that replacing Wandale is going to be easy. The idea that 2 freshman and a transfer are going to work out perfectly for a team that's never had back to back 10 win seasons is kind of a stretch.

Replacing WanDale may not be easy but the transfer from Va Tech, T. Robinson, will soften the blow. Levis 2nd year and his familiarity with the Tight Ends along with improvements of D. Harris, C. Lewis, C. Maywood along with the incoming speed and talent of the freshmen will help. Hopefully Coach Scag's utilization of the talented backfield wi

Sorry, computer glitch. The backfield along with TE's and more speed on the outside is going to make defenses play straight up, which hopefully Coach Scag will take advantage of the middle. We could see plenty of YAC this year from recievers and RB's out of the backfield.

Not that I am pulling for Rattler or saying he’s gonna be the best QB in the league next year, but he didn’t struggle in the Big 12… he was the preseason top QB, predicted top 5 pick and Heisman favorite last year going into the season, and hype doesn’t get you all of that. There was a lot of politics and booster pressure involved in that QB controversy in Norman so it’s not as simple as he struggled

Yet he got benched for a true freshman. Hard to conclude anything other than he wasn't performing up to expectations of the OU staff and, therefore, got benched. His stats in the games he started early in the season were significantly diminished IIRC. And, don't forget he was playing against Big 12 'defenses' which are historically crummy in most cases. I'll be surprised if Rattler isn't much better than what USCe ran out there last year but will also be surprised if he's in the top half of SEC QBs by year's end.

With another year of coaching, I expect Levis to avoid forcing the ball into coverage (which resulted in a few picks last year), spread the ball around much more as he'll have more targets of more equal ability, utilize the RBs for solid gains which was a rarity last year, consistently find the right guy to throw to and to run/scramble with his eyes more upfield so that last second guy breaking open will get the ball rather than him tucking and running.

He's got all the physical tools and, by all accounts, is an avid student of the game who accepts coaching very well. With RS as OC and QB coach, he almost has to be better. Coen was a solid coach but only had the fall and the season to work with Will. Coach S has had the offseason, spring, pre-season and soon full season to really work on the little things that can be the difference between last year's production (certainly very good) and the next level (more efficient, fewer turnovers, better decisions, etc.). Plus, he may not have the one weapon as good as Wan'dale (still TBD, though) but I believe he'll have at least a handful of weapons better than Ali and that may be even harder to defend.

he got benched for a true freshman.

Probably the best true freshman since Trevor Lawrence came on the scene. Not like he got beat out by a walk on. Bad defense had them down 28-7 best I remember to Texas in the game he got benched.

Just a case of getting recruited over. Rattler was a preseason top 10 draft pick last May.

Talented yes.... Need big improvement between the ears, also yes.

Like I said in the other qb thread, Levis might have progressed substantially and in fact be an NFL 1st rounder.....but....we have a balanced system, where he won't put up eye popping numbers as the pass-first teams in the SEC will

Tennessee, Miss St, Bama, Ole Miss are pass 1st/pass 2nd teams. Arkansas and Florida will keep the ball in their QBs hands for both run and pass.

He completed 66% last year. What level does he need to be at to be “accurate”?

Something in the 70s I think would be good. Not wasting good crossing routes would be good too. I'm not dogging him, I'm just saying there is plenty of room for improvement. Spreading the ball around would be good as well. This league, you probably get to run a play once or twice before the defense recognizes it. Coen drew up some really nice shallow routes, Levi's saw them but his timing was off, lacked some touch. from my earlier post, I think this is where he will show a lot of improvement. Reps are huge for the QB, he's getting them this offseason.

I think he will get there this year (70s) - 66% as a first time full-time starter after having about 3 months to learn the new offense is pretty good imo. I’m sure they have had him work on the areas he needed to improve on (that you mention). I’m really excited to see him work this fall. Should be fun to watch.

Exactly. We don't need to replace WRobinson but if we do find someone who can put up his numbers, that's great. We need to elevate play at all of our WR positions to make it harder on defenses. Rotating receivers and developing em. We need a team of SEC WRs to make that position group strong as a whole

70% seems an unreasonable expectation when only 1 SEC QB (Rogers)did it last year and that was in an air raid offense.

Could be, I guess. I think we are and have been trying to be a short yardage team that takes shots to keep the defense honest. I would hope/think Levi’s should be in that range to keep the offense moving.

Well, two transfers last year at QB and WR were enough to beat a 10 win program with many more 10 win seasons than Kentucky has had.

Just sayin’.

Who are you a fan of, lazydave841?

By damn, I done forgot!!

A lot of these media personalities attack Kentucky because they know a response is coming, it’s the cool thing to do and makes them feel edgy because of the opinions of our fan base. Levis is a good QB maybe not top ten NFL draft worthy but I sure am happy to have him as our QB at Kentucky. he can shut them up with his play on the field

it is a pretty lofty goal . Only 3 teams last year had a 70% or better completion rate. Miss st, Ohio st and Purdue. UK was 19th in the country so maybe they can move up.

IDK, didn't recognize him. He has UK 5th in the east
Mike Bratton. “SECMike”. He had UK ranked 3rd overall in the SEC behind Bama and UGA back in January. He’s a UT fan. If I knew how to post a screenshot of his January rankings I would.

He did a post-Spring analysis as well and put UK 5th overall. (Only behind UGA in the East again).

In fairness to SECMike, we all know how much can change from late April to Mid-July!

I mean, our highest rated recruiting class in 50 years came to campus in June.

That had to knock us down a few slots!

Right?

I honestly think he is doing it to help weigh down UK’s votes that we are gonna get in the SEC Media poll. I bet we get some first place votes.
