Reminds me of a kid I coached back in the late 80's. He was 6'7 230 pounds. Kid could shoot the 3, rebound. He was the total package n the court. I had him on an AAU team. Problem was he didnt like school. I was told he would spend his days walking the halls and goofing off and the high school (which is still open in Louisville) just let it slide. Well along comes the ACT and SAT and rumor was the kid scored a FIVE...A FIVE on the ACT. I told him you get a FIVE for writing your name down dont you? Anywho this kid ended up JUCO and made it to D1 where he was projected as a first rounder heading into his Sr year. Actually projected top 5. That senior year he disappeared, never drafted...just disappeared. Ive since been told he died young of a heart attack after coaching a youth league game (early 30's).
The bottom line is kids are going to do what they are allowed to get away with. This kid was pushed through because he was a rare talent. I once heard Larry Johnsons JUCO coach say this kid was the best JUCO prospect he had ever seen (ahead of grand mama), But the kid wasted it. Its a shame these schools dont hold kids to a higher standard. Im all for "WIn at all costs" but when you lose a soul/kid in the process what are we really gaining? UNC is a glaring example of all that is wrong with D1 athletics.
