Next Years Class

Sunday morning boredom setting in. So here goes.

My attention currently is on this season and this team. Looking to next year, there is a lot to be excited about. I know, I know, it seems it is always wait until next year. Our potential and, realistic roster for next year is, on paper, great.

Position 4-5
Lance Ware
Ugonna
Collins
Bradshaw
It is only those four. Every player will have game minutes on a nightly basis. Is it enough to make the three returnees want to stay. I think so. I consider those 4 to be as strong and as deep as any team we have had in a long time, at those positions. Experience, athleticism and a talented newcomer. Grade A

3 Position
Chris Livingston
Justin Edwards
Livingston has blossomed over the last 2 weeks and I think he will continue the upward climb. I do not think Livingston will try to move on to the NBA. Both players bring tremendous strength to that position. Grade A

Guards 1 and 2 position
Adou Thiero , also play 3 or 4.
Reed Shephard
Rob Dillingham
D.J. Wagner
This is potentially a super group of guards. After a few games I fully believe this group can be talked about like earlier teams we have had. Only concern is consistent outside shooting. (Hopefully) that will end up a strength. Grade A-

Unknowns
Antonio Reeves
C.J
I am doubtful that we get either one of these guys back. It would be great to have them, especially Reeves. Reeves may take his chance at being drafted or maybe, just decide to go overseas. C.J. turns 24 soon. I am not sure where his mind is about playing.
If both come back, we are set. If both leave, we will need to pick up a player or two.

Oscar, Toppin and Wheeler are gone. I see no chance of any of them staying. Some of you may know more about that or just differ with me.

I think Cal has assembled a great, competitive group. Again while my focus is on this years team, I am feeling very good about next year.
Think Wallace is gone for sure although I think another year for he , OT($$$), Reeves and Toppin would serve them well for their future. I'm not sold on next years class because outside of RS there are once again, no shooters(makers). Plus that team would be t3 probably.

Cj is a candid to give up basketball altogether. Reeves is a possibility. Remember, the ncaa just tightened up the transfer rule , where you basically can’t do it twice…so it’s pro or stay for Reeves . Livingston could transfer or go pro
Im not getting the Livingston to the nba hype?
He’s a hustler and plays hard.
Has to be able to finish and shoot up there. Needs to be able to dribble better and create shots. Three or four dribble guy.
Like to see him have an off the dribble mid range jumper or get straight to the rim and finish.
Two foot jumper needs to learn to finish off one foot. He slows down at the basket and the defender catches up and blocks him.
Doesn’t finish well in the open court break.
Defense is improving. Rebounding well but at 6 6 not a priority in the league.
Still fouls and loses time.
Potential is there but he’s not nba ready. Another year for sure. Go when you can for sure stick.
Love hearing he’s the hardest worker.
Seems to be a great team mate.
Like his attitude. Plays hard.

If CL decides to get some experience for another year why would he leave? He could be the team leader and that would impress the NBA scouts and raise his draft stock.

I like your projected team's potential next year. I hope you're right about Livingston coming back and playing the PF spot (maybe just say you're playing two SFs, or 3 2Gs, or whatever else makes Livingston or "his people" happy). But I think the Center position is potentially a little weak - but as a group maybe it'll be fine.
I think there's enough versatility to work. Bradshaw is a scorer with range for a big man. Ugonna is a defender, Ware bring physicality and leadership. Could also go small and fast with Collins there

I think it will be the weakest spot on the team, but still feel it's in the B-B+ range compared to who else is out there.

One, I think anyone can transfer. Askew, De'Vion Harmon, Locke, Wahab, etc have proven that tightening didn't happen.

Secondly, Reeves, CJ, Toppin, Wheeler, and Oscar can all transfer as graduate transfers if they are on pace for it, which would make the entire thing moot.

Everyone on our current team has another year of eligibility, if desired, and everyone on our team is likely free to transfer, if desired.

Livingston is a 2nd round pick. I expect he wants to be a 1st rounder, and think he can get there with 1 more year, SHARING the 2 F spots interchangeably w/ Edwards (Yeah, Reeves will play some SF, and Collins some PF).

Reeves will play, as our only good shooter. Probably some 2 and some 3.

I will be pulling for Sheppard, but many of you will be disappointed, because he won't play a lot as a FR (unless Dillingham doesn't show up). But patience is a virtue, and I think he may be really good for us a Soph.

At C, we primarily need DEF, Shot Blocking, and Rebounding. I think our best chance at those is Onyenso, followed closely by Collins and Bradshaw, with Ware trailing. Other than putbacks and lobs to these guys, offense will mostly come from the other 4 spots.

If Dilly comes, it will be interesting to see how Dilly and Wagner play together, with both used to having the ball. But we've seen that before (Wall/Bledsoe, Fox/Briscoe, & others).

It can work. The problem with versatility, however, is that it’s fine in regard to a single player, but it doesn’t work so well when you have to rely on 3 players at the same position to get that versatility. Only one Center is going to be on the floor at a time. I think having a more well-rounded starting Center is more important than having 3 guys that do different things well. Basically, I want Tshiebwe back (surprise to no one); and if that happened I wouldn’t much care which of those other guys was his backup. I’m assuming that Bradshaw is a better shot blocker than Tshiebwe, but I wouldn’t expect him to be close to as good as Oscar next season in any other way – probably even including defense.

I think if you have to rely on Bradshaw as your starting Center next season he would work best alongside a strong-man type at PF. He seems pretty wiry still. But again, I think playing multiple guys at Center (because of the limitations of any one in particular) can work, I just wouldn’t view the situation as desirable.

I do think that team (with Edwards and Livingston as the forwards) would probably need some dependable (but not prolific) scoring from the post. I mean more than lobs and putbacks. Some occasional real throw it inside and get a bucket or a foul type of post scoring.

Hypotheically (min-player-pts):
28-Wagner-11
28-Dillingham-12
12-Fredrick (or other shooter)-5
4-Sheppard-2
24-Reeves-12
6-Theiro-2
26-Edwards-12
26-Livingston-11

14-Collins-5
16-Onyenso-5
12-Bradshaw-4
4-Ware-1

So I see 5 double-digit scorers, with usually 4 on the floor at a time. I think that is enough.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't last year's team essentially the same kids THIS years team> You know, the ones who lost to the Sisters of the Poor in the first round?
