New Tim Sullivan story on self-described slimeball

Does anybody really believe Pitino did not know? Maybe he was not the instigator, but how could he not know about loud parties and prostitution in his own dorm over a period of years. You gotta be real naive to believe Pitino's claim he didn't know "nuttin"

While entertaining Kyle Macy on a recruiting visit, Hmiel remembers that his strategy “totally backfired” with Indiana’s Mr. Basketball of 1975.

“This is a Christian kid who didn’t drink, and I’m at a bar,” Hmiel said. “I don’t know if he ever saw a naked woman and I asked him, ‘Do you want some (sex)? Do you want a beer, a shot of whiskey, a Long Island Iced Tea?’ He said, ‘No, I’ll just have a Coke. No, I don’t want a girl. I want to go play tennis and see the Reds tomorrow.’"

Macy, who became a consensus All-America at Kentucky and starred on the Wildcats’ 1978 NCAA championship team, said he could not recall the bar trip Hmiel described. His lingering memory of his recruiting visit to Cincinnati was of being ditched at a dormitory when his guide, Steve Collier, left to visit his girlfriend

Pitino has such a history, we probably wouldn't believe half of what really went on.

The year he scolded Rhodes, Delk and other Cats in private individually after losing to UNC in Birmingham in the Elite 8 told me all I needed to know how Pitino treated his players.

He is so 'Hilliary-ish' its crazy.

I would really like to read that article, but I don't have a subscription to CJ and my free access period recently ended. Anybody know another way that I can read the article?

Speaking of Gale Catlett, anyone remember where he received some of his training, who recommended Catlett to be his replacement?
Rumored that Rupp was pushing for Catlett to be the new coach at Rupp's retirement. This caused Joe B Hall to make a move to St Louis. He quickly returned to UK when Rupp's was vetoed. When UK (state of Ky) deny Rupp's appeal to exempt him from the mandatory retirement age at 70, Hall became UK next coach. Rupp agreed to take the Duke head coach job, but later said no to manage his own cattle farm.........Would anyone turn down Duke today to be a farmer?

From what I've heard about Macy back then, not only do I completely believe this, but the only thing that might surprise me about it is that Kyle was willing to drink a Coke--what with all its caffeine and sugar and all. By Kyle's clean cut standards, that Coca Cola decision was living on the wild side that night.

That said, I thought that article was a good read, especially for any naïve enough to think the recruiting world was any less dirty back in the old days. And I think his basic point about UL that McGee is essentially a scapegoat set up to take the the fall for Pitino and higher ups is also correct. The notion that a control freak like Pitino didn't know all these goddamn things were going on in his program is absurd. Of course Pitino knew this stuff was going on. But it was set up nicely so he can pin the blame on the low-salaried little guy McGee if the shit ever hit the fan.

I had classes with Macy at UK....he was the ultimate straight arrow.

Interesting the part about plausible deniability. Very much like Pitino,Jurich, the whole UL athletics dept. in this instance. It's all on the go-fer, the peon McGee.

Wonder if the dude who shunned Hmiel after the intelligence slight went on to become an engineer?
