Hope this hasn’t already been posted as I have been away from this board for a while .
Interesting talk show on ESPN U radio with two female host (Esses ? ) .

Anyway great show and what they said was the new contract for the Iowa Offensive coordinator is incentive based .

If Iowa doesn’t score at last 25 points in seven games his contract is reduced by a year and some salary adjustment.
fans are having 25 / 7 T shirts printed .

I wish ALL of our teams contracts were that way .
interesting thing about the contract is if defense scores that counts . The ladies questioned whether it would cause Iowa to go for it on 4 th down when they wouldn’t otherwise .
Also to run up the score if they re leading but dont have 25 points is in late fourth quarter .
Again I like the concept . What do you guys think?

Lol Iowa fans don’t see your thinking.
Iowa thinks it’s a way to reward mediocrity.

They aren’t at all far off those averages as one of the absolute worst offenses around. Magically scoring one more TD per game is celebrated like they’re magically a offensive team. Most Iowa fans are irate.

Would be the equivalent of when we threw for 140 yards a game putting out a offense must pass for 130 yards rule.
@rucker4 will tell ya about it.

I love incentive compensation systems but not this one largely for the reasons you point out. I think it makes sense to give coaching staffs incentive for number of wins and other high level achievements like winning the East, which is the way Stoops contract is constructed, but I think extending that to coordinators and position coaches as well would make a lot of sense.

Just checked our 2022 schedule again, we only scored 25 points 6 times - all 4 ooc games, State, and Florida. Ouch.

Tying coordinator/position coach compensation to broader team achievements like wins sounds good in theory. But those coaches also can’t fully control achieving those goals, so you then run the risk of losing quality coaches if the team doesn’t perform well.

Let’s say you bring in a new OC and the offense suddenly averages 35 points a game, but then the defense also tanks that season and the team doesn’t end up winning many games. The OC has done a fantastic job that year but his compensation will be cut because the defense wasn’t able to hold up their end of the bargain.

Comp design is an interesting thought exercise though. I agree with the comment above that simply setting a target for average points per game seems potentially problematic, but I’m not sure I know enough about the ins and outs of coaching to be able to say what the right metrics would be for an OC.

Maybe if you set a target of gaining more yards than your opponent’s defense typically allows in the majority of your games? If you’re consistently having more success against your opponents’ defenses than other teams did, perhaps that’s a good indicator of a good OC.

I’m certainly no expert on comp design or coaching, so maybe that doesn’t make sense either. Interesting to think about though.

Fair arguments, but OTOH I think rewarding coaches for win/loss record enhances teamwork and cooperation within the staff. In your example I would argue that the OC that did a fantastic job can still be rewarded with a salary boost

I like incentives, but I'm not sure this one will work out well unless it has a million clauses attached to it.

Last game of the year, you're up 24-21 and only need to run out the clock, but you've only scored 25 or more 6 times. Kneel or try to score?
Score it’s the difference in fufilling your duties or not. Tough beans.
Which that should be a HC decision not necessarily a OC one. Assuming it’s family I figure it would work out in the best interest of the OC.

This was posted by Rucker earlier. Everyone considers it a joke of a contract! I assume you haven't read that to meet the 25 point threshold is really low as almost 80 teams did that last year! Iowa did this to try to get the fans off of the head coach's head - as he is the father of the failing OC - lol! It the points had been set at 30 and no defensive scores counted. But it does invite running up the score on weaker teams - so you have to be careful what you ask for from the OC.

Go Big Blue!

This is exactly what I was talking about. There is literally thousands of scenarios where this could screw up.

Don't feel too bad. Look at Iowa's record over the past 8 years.

Iowa just needs a guy like Coen to be become a really, really dangerous team year in and year out! The Hawks are probably the favorite Big Ten Team of most Kentuckians! We obviously like their "style" just look at who our head coach is!

Go Big Blue!

Would love to see Barney do something like this but he's not creative enough nor does he have leverage. What could be done is incentive some of Stoop's' salary or tie bonuses to offensive metrics. While winning games in the final determination of success, anyone with a brain can see that we're not going to move forward, and will probably take a step backwards, unless the O takes a giant leap.

Hopefully Coen will be able to replicate and build off of his first stint and all of this will be moot.
