New #1 2023 recruiting rankings

to me there is little rationale for a program like Duke, who has a 30 year coach - who made that program and is stepping aside to bring in top recruits under a new unproven coach. Even in this era of OAD, this is where a coach of another program - set Cal aside - Self, Wright, Izzo, Few (and by local rivalry and recent accomplishments, Davis) - should be benefiting from the uncertainty of that program coaching change

We've seen where a new coach comes in and replaces a failing coach - and brings in a new recruiting energy.

But have we ever seen where a high profile coach leaves, replaced by an unknown, unproven guy and their recruiting improves?

so maybe Coach K is the man behind the curtain, still pulling the strings, or maybe Duke has some crazy NIL system in place where they can promise revenue streams that are silly amounts of money.

Maybe this is a short term situation. I remember Tubby landing Prince and Bogans, ostensibly on the idea that he was an extension of what Pitino built, but Tubby was also a proven coach. However the glow of Pitino basketball only lasted a couple of years when Tubby preferred a grind it out style slug fest. Other programs stepped in to fill the void of what Kentucky used to dominate.

Whatever is happening at Duke right now - its not within the normal boundaries of college basketball recruiting.

We just need that IT player. We haven’t had that since Davis. Maybe KAT.

We have just been like a yawn fest since 2015. 2016-2018 got a little exciting. Then it went really south from 2019.
You just contradicted yourself
It's been a yawn fest since 15, but oh wait 17 was pretty exciting and got boring at the end of 19.
17 and 19 were on par talent wise with the majority of our stacked teams.

Im afraid the media has created a storm that’s not going to be slowed down. That coupled with the fact that Nike likes the storyline? I mean espn has created a monster and in peoples mind these days it’s Duke and everyone else. How can that be slowed down? All I can figure is when they lose with these first few good classes under Scheyer the shine has to eventually wear off. It did with Calipari.

yea but its not like Duke players have gone on to great things

its not like Zion is playing in the all star game. That vaunted recruiting class of Coach K failed in college and aren't exactly tearing it up as pros (collectively). One of them is tearing up his elastic waistband.

Maybe you are right on ESPN, I've felt ESPN as a core sports station is well past its glory days, its the conference stations that are driving it for college ball.

It’s pretty clear to me that K didn’t prioritize developing players for future success in the NBA. Look at how many guys came out of Duke as top recruits or high draft picks and are complete busts. Now look at UK’s guys under Cal. Most of them have the foundation for success in the nba. That’s not an accident. People want to complain that “Cal only cares about the NBA.” Well that’s been an effective marketing pitch based on results. For Duke, recruits should look at their players in the NBA and run away, but they aren’t. Hell, Zion is one of the most talented players in the last 20 years, yet he’s so fat he can’t even get on the court. I think Duke becomes a destination for talented kids that want to do what they want on the court and are scared of work that’s expected of them from Cal.

Which is how it’s been. We have nothing to show for our talent since 2015.

Duke just keeps on keepin' on. Bastards.
I could be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time but that is a very inexperienced coaching staff to be running a top notch program and having to manage all those young players. Unless K is doing stuff behind the scenes, which I could totally see, they could decline rapidly. I know K has always been about having former players on his staff but they really need a proven/experienced coach as the top assistant on that staff. And let's be honest up to this point no former Duke player/coach has set the world on fire as coaches so I am not sure that Scheyer will be any different.

at the end of the day though, Duke has been getting the best recruits and still does

whatever benefit of being with Cal isn't translating to the elite college athletes that we all agree Cal needs to be successful.

So regardless of what Cal is doing with the guys he has in preparation for the next level, its not translating to success in what he is responsible for.

We're in on 5 of this top ten. Personally, I always feel like 247 has the best rankings, then Espn then On3 then Rivals.

But needless to say, I don't think this class is very top heavy. Meaning I think that any one of these 1-8 prospects could easily be the best player when the dust is settled. Wagner is the best Guard, and Edwards is skyrocketing, and UK is heavy on him. I feel good about Matas too. Same prep school Clarke went to.

K will be attached to that program until he’s 6 ft under. And even then his spirit may refuse to leave Cameron Indoor.
