National Coach of the year....

He should be, he should win it honestly. With everything he’s had to deal with, where the team started, the strength of this conference. He’s done the best coaching job of anyone in the country. Please someone show me who else has had to deal with the injuries as consistently as he has with a team returning zero points a game and is still playing. I’ll wait.

No question, even I forget what all he had to do since the day he was hired to pull this off. When the season got rocky and even the wins seemed hard, it was easy to forget we handed this guy a bunch of car parts from Days Auto and said build us a car.

I like Pope. He did a very good job.

I have difficulty saying the team that finished in a 3 way tie for 6th place in the conference was the best coach in the nation.

Expect mostly crickets. Now that the "no tournament wins" and "can't coach defense" lines are pretty much dead the Pope detractors don't have much ammunition.

And the reverse of this happens when the media thinks about the job Cal has done this year. They are falling all over themselves about how Cal has brought this team from nobodys to the Sweet Sixteen and they/we all forget they were considered a stront contender with plenty of talent young and old coming into the year. Then when they got off to a terrible start they turned into sweet heart undergods who've overacheived now by everyone. They were supposed to be where they are now with the roster they have. There's some real talent there and the veterans are finally playing to their talent too now. I said all year people were misjuding their bad start that they never should have gone through with that talent.

Jesus Christ man.

It’s a thread. About our coach.

No reason to bring Cal into it in an essay plagued with run ons, grammar issues and unhinged rants.

It’s almost like a large chunk of this board would rather be mad about Cal than excited about UK and Pope.

NCAA Coach of the year ?

Shameless self thread bump there with this one.... I'm glad this subject gets brought up. I had great hopes this thread would stay alive and active until the end of the season. ... I'm still waiting.

I was told (back then) to wait until the season was over. That there were a lot of good candidates for COY. They announced the final 4 or 5 and Coach Pope wasn't even mentioned. I laughed. Scoffed, even.

I was told to wait until the season is OVER, and I am still waiting.

Get back to me when the season is over, everybody.

Even if we go out against the Vols, what he did under the total circumstances at the toughest college basketball program to coach in the country at, and he somehow managed to get them as one of the best 5 (6? or even 7 - arguably, the SEC was historically great and has proven itself THIS YEAR) and one may say it was not the best coaching job in the country.

But certainly on the short list. Cmon.

Scheyer and Pearl, Oates and Izzo, amongst them, Izzo really did a marvelous job at Michigan State. I would say only Golden at Florida has had a better coaching year than Pope at this point. Samson, Barnes, Beard, even Cal .... they were all expected to have a good year, but nobody exceeded expectations getting the actual results - than Coach Pope.

Sure, I see it with blue tinted goggles. Give it to Golden if the Gators cut the nets down, hands down. But i could only go that route at this point.

We're just damned lucky to have Coach Pope and none of the other names that could potentially have been here, to lead us forward after this turnaround year. I 'll at least go out on a limb here and say : just getting here, CMP vindicated his hiring this year quite admirably. He's still got a lot to learn.

Talk about "coaching under a microscope"

I still say he's top 2 or 3 best in the country - pound for pound - he has done well at the hardest place to do it at.

but the TLDNR version still said to me :

Wait until the season is over. I am still , happily," waiting."

😉

Go Big Blue !
