NASCAR thread

I thought Bell raced him fine. Definitely did NOT "run him up into the wall" as Logano claimed. He is just a whiny bitch and one of the most dirtiest / wreckless drivers out there. As a matter of fact, I already had him top 4A most hated drivers, he just made the list (Chris Jerricho hat tip), He is top 4 most hated drivers. Now, I will add Keselowski (should have been there already, I just overlooked him) as 4A. Mainly had Chase Elliott there because of media and fans, not him personally.
Redo Top 4 Hated :

Gordon
Johnson
Logano
Larson

Gate Keepers / Dis-Honorable mentions :
Brad Keselowski
Ricky Stenhouse
Ross Chastain
Kyle Petty
Dale Jr.

Corey LaJoie is so terrible it is hard to have him in the top 4 / dis-honorable mentions. Everyone on the list has SOME talent, LaJoie, not so much.

That sounds like an awesome weekend last year at COTA with Red Bull. I would want turn 1 seats too with all of the action, especially on the restarts. Is there a pretty good view of the finish line from there? I like those 3 road courses. Gotten used to Sonoma, Watkins Glen throughout the summer and COTA is top notch. Wish NASCAR had it on the schedule 10 years ago when I lived in San Antonio. The Rockies would be a good backdrop for a road course. NASCAR and Indy used to go to Pikes Peak in Fountain, CO and the mountains could be see from the distance in turns 3 and 4. A course around Denve closer though would be a better setting for the mountains. NASCAR in the 90s used to do these Japan exhibition races on a road course after the season. I think this would be a good idea again and get them more exposure since this is something they have been looking to do over the past few years with these different track.

From the Turn 1 Grandstand you have a perfect view of the front straightaway and start/finish line. Your elevated so you have a visual of much of the entire track. Would live to sit there for the F1 race as well but man it's $$$.

I actually work in San Antonio but live closer to New Braunfels. I was living in Austin when they were building COTA and for the first few years it was open. They have an Amphitheater in the middle of it for Concerts as well. Did you go to Texas Motor Speedway when you were here? I find the racing there a snoozefest most of the time.

First race I ever went to was Bristol for the spring race in 2006 I think. It was the same Sunday that George Mason beat UCONN in the NCAA Tournament. I think it was about 38 degrees that day. Miserable weather but every seat was filled.

Had no clue that Nascar had raced at Pikes Peak. I found an old Busch Series race on YouTube. I'll check that out.

I'm not a fan of rovals at all and to be honest don't care for road courses either. I hate that one small mistake on pit road can put you in the back and with track position at a premium in most cases your day is probably done unless some odd pit strategy and cautions can fall your way. I have always favored short tracks and super speedways but the next gen car has made both of those types of racing hard to watch because nobody can pass.

What's interesting is that the reasons you don't care for Road Courses are some of the main reasons I like them.. The more chaos and different strategies the better 😅

I'm sure everyone remembers Marcos Ambrose. It seems like every road race that dude did the opposite pit strategy of everyone else. He had pretty good success most of the time as well

And who doesn't love when a dude completely misses the bus Stop at Watkins Glen? Haha.

Pikes Peak Race
Oh yeah that is a perfect view of the line there at COTA and turn one. It appears from that angle to be the best section to view the largest portion of the track from that level than other sections. Have you gone up the Observation Tower? NASCAR really needs to consider going back to Pikes Peak. They are big on expanding into markets where they don't have tracks at on the schedule and one already built in Colorado is perfect for them to accomplish this. Wasn't bad racing there either.

Unfortuately I did not make it up Texas Motor Speedway. My buddy and I were planning to make the drive up to Ft Worth for an Indy race there in 2013, but he got deployed to Qatar. The 2014 Texas race would have been awesome to see. Especially post race when the Gordon/Keselowski fight happened on pit road in the playoffs. My family and I went to a few Kentucky Speedway races, one Talladega race in 2017 that Stenhouse won, the 2023 Nashville Superspeedway with Chastain wining, a couple Busch races there in the early 2000s. Never made it Bristol, but would love to see the short track action there. I remember watching that 2006 race you went to, Kurt Busch's first win with Penske. He had a stretch there with Roush where he won several in a row.

New Braunfels is a nice place. Close enough to SA without all of the congestion in the city. My buddy lived outside of 1604, around Camp Bullis. I lived a couple miles from the NSA building off Potranco. Wasn't going to make that same long drive to Lackland everyday like he did. Went to Schlitterbahn while I was there, and did a volunteer event in New Braunfels with the Salvation Army at Thanksgiving.

Never been up in the Observation Tower but I bet you can see Dallas from there haha. Turn 1 rocks, best view of everything for sure and super convenient. I'm with you as well on needing to explore new markets. Is the Pikes Peak track still functioning? It's a shame that Kentucky Speedway is used for parking busses now. It seems like they could have Arca races there or something.

Texas Motor Speedway has a great vibe. Fun environment but when I was there someone would geet the lead and then it was just a Merry Go Round race. I didn't watch the race earlier this year but I saw where people were complaining about the track surface. I didn't remember the Gordon/Keslowski scuffle so I had to look it up. Even Harvick snuck in to give Brad a shove lol.

I got back in the dad game 6 years ago and my daughter probably says the word Schlitterbahn every day haha. We have the season pass so she expects us to go there every day. Where we live there are a lot of folks that work at Randolph. SATX is a military city for sure. Thanks for your service.

Thank you! I appreciate that. Hope you all have some fun at Schlitterbahn this year. I need to make a trip back to SA soon. There is always something going on throughout the year to have fun there.

I looked up the racing that goes on currently at Pikes Peak, and I did not know there was a clause that prevented professional/sanctioned motorsports to race there any longer after ISC sold it. I read where they would need to make safety renovations which would be $1 million+. NASCAR could come up with the funding for that if PPIR were to be considered for another race in the future. These days they have Super Sprints, drag racing on pit road, drifting utilizing their roval with, and several random racing events that take place throughout the year. I agree about adding something like ARCA or the Truck Series to get the sport involved at those track again. It is great to see how NASCAR has started to come back around to some older tracks and get back to their roots at Bowman Gray, The Rock and North Wilkesboro. The Busch Series, Truck Series and Indy used to go to another D-Shaped track like PPIR, with Nazareth Speedway that is defunct today.

Still love to go back and watch the Gordon/Keselowski fight. Never gets old! In real time when it happened, I did not catch Harvick back there just chilling at the rear of Brad's car, watching the whole thing go down, and decided to escalate it into the brawl by pushing Keselowski. Hilarious. Their interviews in the postrace were gold. Harvick smiling at the beginning, proud of that one! 3 weeks before that at Charlotte, Brad angered both Hamlin and Matt Kenseth in the same race. Kenseth ambushed him between the haulers. Roger Penske certainly shook things up here just days before the Indy 500 with the major decision to fire Tim Cindric and a couple more executives. Things on the NASCAR side seem to be going well for them. A lot of people wondering if this will impact Austin's long term future there.

Took a lot to provoke a reaction like that from Matt Kenseth who kept his cool throughout most of his career. Only driver feuds I recall with him were this Keselowski one, briefly Gordon, Edwards, and that incident with Logano deliberately taking him out at Kansas and Matt putting him into the wall at Martinsville.

Logano had that one coming to him. The crowd reaction after the Martinsville incident told the whole story. And then what Logano did to Truex a few years later in the playoffs at Martinsville.

What track is that image of? I feel like that's the style of track that could bring us all together, kinda the best of both worlds 😅. That's pretty cool.

That's a shame about the Pikes Peak Track but at least they have some type of racing still happening there, unlike Kentucky Speedway.

I'll check out those vids you posted. Many of these im not familiar with because I didn't always watch Nascar previously. I catch up on the past thanks to YouTube lol. I did see this on my YT feed about Kenseth and Logano. Does anyone like Logano? Haha. Edit: now i see y'all are already talking about this one.. funny.

If Penske moves on from Austin Cindric do you think he would have a problem getting a new ride? Seems like he would be in pretty high demand since he was in the Playoff last year and overall seems like a good dude

That image above is the layout of Pikes Peak, which also includes their roval course inside. There is a lack of quality racing footage out there of the racing on their roval course, but here is one brief clip in this video.

Logano is a good driver. Just one of those guys that finds himself in these feuds throughout his career. I actually thought he was right and laughed at his interview for saying what everyone was thinking at the time during the Pocono incident where Harvick put him in the Turn 3 wall in 2010. My cousin who is the same age as Joey, raced against Logano driving quarter midgets in Connecticut. He lives in Terryville, CT.
Here is an old photo of my cousin back then.

IMO, Cindric would definitely get a chance with another organization if he were to leave the #2. His talent and versatility on any track is impressive. Playoffs in 3 of his first 4 full-time years since he clinched a berth this year at Talladega. Winning on Super Speedways, Gateway, which also has a roval course in it too, and he is a good road course driver with his background in IMSA and the USF2000 Championship. Cindric has a few RC victories in the Truck and Xfinity Series. Penske should keep him and would be better off keeping the situation with Tim separate so that it does not negatively impact the season while he is having his best year. 6th in the playoff points standings. 13th in points overall, but would be 9th if not for the behavioral penalty docking him 50 points for the incident with Ty Dillon at COTA.

Redo Top 4 Hated :

Gordon
Johnson
Logano
Larson

Gate Keepers / Dis-Honorable mentions :
Brad Keselowski
Ricky Stenhouse
Ross Chastain
Kyle Petty
Dale Jr.

Corey LaJoie is so terrible it is hard to have him in the top 4 / dis-honorable mentions. Everyone on the list has SOME talent, LaJoie, not so much.
As a Gordon and Elliott guy this hits a little close to home LOL. I get the hate for both though.

Since the 90s
Joey Logano
Denny Hamlin
Kurt Busch
Brad Keselowski

Consolation:
Kyle Busch (2008-18)

People have cooled on both of the Busch brothers, but Kurt will always remain in that top 4 for how he treated everyone from 2001-2013. Jimmy Spencer should've broken his jaw.

The famous "his wife wears the firesuit in the family" comment. 😅 even if people don't like Logano that's still pretty funny. I remember when "Sliced Bread" made his debut in Nascar and the hype was unreal and I think that caused him to have a bullseye on his back somewhat. Pretty cool that your cousin raced against him as he was coming up the ranks in Connecticut. I'm sure he has plenty of stories to tell.

Let me ask you this about the Cindric/Dillon incident at COTA. I agree that Cindric deserved to be punished but why is that considered foul yet so many times dudes clearly intentionally wreck someone on the final lap and we hear "that's just part of racing?" I guess that's something I just don't understand.

I agree, it was only a matter of time until Logano started winning big in NASCAR. The change to Penske was better for him than Gibbs where Hamlin and Busch were the stars there. In many ways the young Logano was like Jeff Gordon. He was different and the young guy many resented at the time. People either loved or hated him. He did so much for the sport to grow in the 90s and beyond. I know Rusty absolutely could not stand him. Rusty whined about everyone though, even his teammates Jeremy Mayfield and Ryan Newman. Jeff quickly became a star winning big right away and that ruffled some feathers. Logano with that same hype still may have another good 5-10 years left to accomplishment much more in his career.

You make a good point about the Cindric/Dillon incident. Over the years NASCAR has preached Boys have at it and police themselves, but everytime drivers do, they penalize them. Yet, they will promote these incidents in commercials, etc to draw in fans to attend and watch the races. I believe the right rear hook is what led to the penalty. Ever since NASCAR penalized Bubba for the right hook on Larson at Vegas, they have issued a penalty. Elliott got one for putting Hamlin in the wall at Charlotte. I am fine with a bump and run or pay back dumping someone on the apron of a short track, or the lower speeds of a road course on the inside. The sport gets too vanilla sometimes and miss the good on-track rivalries in the past.

Looks like you are spot on with Byron right now. Lots of good racing behind the leader but once he or Larson earlier get the lead it seems like nobody is catching them. Not sure if anyone long run can change that.

Blaney's snakebit season seems to be continuing. In the pit when Larson spun out moved hin to like 33rd or something. Interesting that Larson seems dead in the water since his spin.

My Father is a Blaney guy these days with Terry Labonte retired. He isn't too happy about the way his season is going either. Great run by Byron up until that end with Chastain working his way through the field with a backup car. First win for Trackhouse without Pitbull's funds backing them.

It is great to have a postrace show with Prime Video. Going past 11:30 at night. NBC has had some decent postrace segments in the past. FOX Sports needs to step it up. They can at least offer one streaming on their app. I hope this pushes other networks to improve their coveage overall.

I was watching Chastain from early on. When Blaney ended up in the back of the pack Chastain was right with him and he was like a machine. Just kept moving up and didn't get caught up in any of the wrecks.

I don't have any opinion on Chastain but it seems like a lot of fans aren't too fond of him. Why is that and do you think his last pass to take the lead was clean? It looked so to me the Broadcast team seemed to act like it really caused Byron to have to check up.

I'm with you and the others on The Prime Broadcast. I thought the Booth was awesome as well as Edwards, LaJoie and the the blond lady with them. Thought they all seemed very natural in their roles. Huge step up from Fox.

I was watching Chastain from early on. When Blaney ended up in the back of the pack Chastain was right with him and he was like a machine. Just kept moving up and didn't get caught up in any of the wrecks.

A lot of people will say Chastain races others too hard because of the wrecks, but I actually like the guy. He won me over with that balls to the wall move at Martinsville with a hail mary attempt to get the very last spot he needed to make the championship 4. Some people don't like it, but that is a guy who will get everything out of his race car. Reminds me a bit of Ernie Irvan early in his career. Ernie collected up more cars in his crashes, but taking a team like Morgan McClure 7 times over the course of 4 years was impressive. Ross Chastain is a lot like that. He is winning and driving for one of the powerhouse teams like HMS, Penske or Gibbs.

I watched the pass again Chastain made on YouTube focusing on that move and I am good with it. Might have gotten in the back of Byron a little, but the dirty air and passing is awful with this car. Ross was going to get him there on the last run for sure with 6 to go still. Byron's car just wasn't getting through the lapped traffic as well as Ross at the end. Probably was one of his best races ever driven with a career-high in laps led, just did not get the finish for that effort.

Hopefully this broadcast with the same crew will carry over into the TNT races. Definitely felt like a throwback to the 2000s-2015 era. FOX's cartoon graphics and comedy hour style has run its course. When DW retired, that is when the comedy should have stopped. It gets very cringy listening to them bag on each other. Just an unprofessional production all the way around these days when FOX used to be the best. Great crew for Prime. Great to have Carl Edwards back in the sport at the desk and Danielle Trotta in some form has been covering NASCAR since the old Speed Channel days. Just wish someone would have scooped up Allen Bestwick and Dr. Jerry Punch again. From what I read, Dale Jr. has had a lot of influence on how the broadcasts will go on Prime Video which is great. He listens to the fans, and oftentimes identifies with us the same way we feel about things when listening to him on Dale Jr. Download.

I've also heard a lot of media people over the years talk about their dislike for Kurt and Kyle. They must be insufferable people.

Dale Jr is very much about old school tracks, racing styles, etc so if he has a say in it then you know it will be old school. He very much appreciates the old NASCAR like fans. The only problem is he must be one of the only ones associated with NASCAR these days that does.

As for Chastain's move as much blocking and taking a guys line away to put him in dirty air that goes on these days I don't mind a little rubbing if you don't wreck them. If they are slower and want to do those things to slow you down then they need to be prepared to get a bumper like the Intimidator would do.

The infamous Hail Melon that I have heard so much about. I haven't seen it but I remember the Broadcasters talking about it when Bell pulled a similar maneuver in the Championship last year.

I'm with you in that it seemed like Chastain ran a incredible race. I'm curious how he will run at Nashville this week as he is one of the past winners there.

I couldn't agree more about Fox. Their stale comedy bits are cringe to me. Glad to hear that Dale Jr. Is a key decision maker on Prime. Excited to see the Prime Broadcast on a SuperSpeedway this week.

Might be the most exciting moment in NASCAR that did not result in a win. It does not even seem real. The mentality for a driver in that moment of time to know exactly what he was going to do driving into the corner full throttle and get the result he was looking for is amazing. You know he is excited to go to Nashville and try to pull off another win there. Someone had to take one for them team to see if NASCAR was serious about enforcing the wall ride ban like Bell did, and the rest of the race manipulation that ensued from the chaos. NASCAR makes a rule to ban it but drivers have been doing some form of it for years prior to that. Larson and Edwards did their own version to it, but I have yet to see a competitor be wrecked from it other than the driver who drove into the wall. It circles back to something I said the other day. NASCAR penalizes them after a fight despite telling them "Boys have at it", banning wall rides. They sure don't have a problem using it to promote their product in commercials or reliving these moments to boost ratings knowing we can't see finishes like that again within the rules.
