I believe he is slated to join the staff as a student assistant while he finishes his degree, just like Ulis.

The only reason we got an assistant on the roster right now that cow don't know from the past his old buddy system is because I feel like Chin and Orlando were kind of a package deal. Chin is probably one of the best things to happen to cows staff.
Sounds like he would be a good hire but surprised he would want to come on board with Cal at this point of Cal’s career.

Rondo's position was only going to be a grad assistant. Regardless, I'm not sure if he would be able to because of his connection to AAU.
Cal prefers the strong, silent type guys that love bubblegum, and won't try to steal his thunder.
So true. Between bruiser and this guy we’ve got nothing to worry about when cal moves in, built in replacements.
Martin will fill KT Turner's position as a recruiting assistant. Welch hire was a new position for player development.
This is an good hire if it sticks. All those complaining about a buddy hire should come back and apologize when we land a couple west coast guys.

So those are the two options, Tony Barbee and Bruiser (who none of us know how effective they they are as assistant coaches in reality), or a young unknown unproven coach. If only there were a way to prioritize hiring a quality coach.
If only. Cal hires buddies who are yes men and that's about it.
Does anyone know what Cal has his assistants doing anyway? Exactly? Since Robic, I can't really see much difference no matter who's in those seats.

His teammates didn't like him? You must not have been paying attention.
AD, LeBron, Pierce, and KG have all said they loved playing with Rondo. Maybe pay closer attention next time.
Has that worked out for him recently hiring his buddies
who are his buddies that didn't work out? Slice was fine, O has been good, Kenny was good, Robic was good. Lucas and the others weren't his buddies, and they didn't pan out.

The whole point of the post was he doesn’t need to hire people who will always tell him what he wants to here and Challenge him. He has to many people on staff who won’t challenge him. And I would bruiser has been a bad hire by him
This is the replace KT Turner. Welsh is an off court assistant that the ncaa added this year.
I understand the point, but to say hiring his buddies is wrong is, I guess wrong. His buddies can be as critical as someone he doesn't know, and maybe more so. So to say, don't hire your buddy is stupid, and that is what I was pointing out. His buddies are the ones that do challenge him. The people that don't him and need a job are more afraid to challenge him.
Yeah I agree now. I just don’t think who he has on the staff now really challenge him in any way or go at him when he is wrong
He doesn’t just hire buddies who are yes men and that’s about it. His assistant hires since the 9-16 season have been:
1. John Welch - NBA guy with zero coaching history with Cal
2. KT Turner - zero coaching history with Cal
3. Jai Lucas - zero coaching history with Cal
4. Chin Coleman - zero coaching history with Cal
5. Orlando - top assistant with Cal during the best years at UK.
Here's the thing. Look at Cals coaching tree. Any assistants go on to anything big like Pitinos?
I said about. I know there's been some outside of it. But what about Barbee after he got fired, Slice, Bruiser? Orlando is good he had been with Cal before and I hope he speaks up. I feel like Chin was a package deal and I like him. He goes at Cal and there's even been rumors Cal would fire him in the past. True, who knows. Welch was a good hire. Turner had ties to Cals buddy Larry Brown but still a good hire. But none of these guys outside of Chin who aren't Cals buddies stick around. I just wonder if it's because they don't want to be yes men.
In the end I just am a little wore out with assistants being Cals old buddy from the past. I was just hopeful the last spot would be a more exciting hire. It's not the end of the world just my opinion.
With Cal I feel like he needs as much new blood around him as possible. He has become very stagnant. But I love Chin and I'm excited about Welch.
