For years now there has been persistent complaining about the TE position and its perceived lack of usage(most of the complaining by the same people who are constantly negative about anything to do with UK). So I decided to finally dive into the statistics to see how UK's TE usage stacks up with the rest of the SEC. Results below.
For the 2023 Season, UK finished with the 6th most receiving yards from the TE position and the 4th highest usage rate.
SEC Teams ranked by Receiving Yards(% of Total Passing Yards in Parentheses)
1. Georgia: 1001 Yards(25.2%)
2. South Carolina: 568 Yards(17.0%)
3. Alabama: 533 Yards(17.9%)
4. Florida: 517 Yards(16.6%)
5. Tennessee: 511 Yards(17.0%)
6. Kentucky: 504 Yards(20.6%)
7. Arkansas: 488 Yards(21.7%)
8. Ole Miss: 481 Yards(14.5%)
9. Auburn: 468 Yards(24.8%)
10. Texas A&M: 433 Yards(13.8%)
11. LSU: 277 Yards(6.9%)
12. Mizzou: 244 Yards(7.4%)
13. Vandy: 230 Yards(8.6%)
14. Miss St: 116 Yards(5.3%)
I also wanted to see how these stats compared to the last couple years, and in 2022 UK had 494 yards and in 2021 they had 508 yards. So VERY consistent(also we have one more game still to play in 2023),
Overall UK has used their TE as much as anyone in the SEC, other than Georgia(due to the obvious outlier of Brock Bowers). In reality, the TE position isn't used as much in CFB as it is in the NFL.
I wish I had more time to deep dive into the stats, but after some ridiculous comments in the Willie Rodriguez thread, I thought it was worth diving into.
