How do you 'retire' from college football? Evidently, wasn't going to start (or probably play much other than garbage minutes) so I don't blame him.

I read that he was informed he wasn't going to be the starter, nor likely the backup. Pretty hard to take after being the starter 2 years ago until injured, then projected starter until a serious arm injury cost him the season.
