This team has to find some more 3 point shooting... It's not coming from Matthews or Briscoe, and right not Murray and Ulis are not hitting either.

Now you can say Mulder is a defensive liability all you want too, but we haven't seen a large enough sample size to know if that's true yet, and frankly most of our guys are liabilities right now besides Ulis, Briscoe and possibly Matthews...

Here is a guy that shot 45% from 3 last season and he's getting no love from the staff... I trust Cal and I'm not trying to say I know better, but logic would dictate to at least give the guy a chance?

It appears you don't trust him, and that you do know better, or else why the thread? The chance he gets is in practice and the few mins he gets in games where it makes sense. He hasn't earned the minutes yet. Doesn't mean he never will.

I guess I am more so just puzzled as to why he's getting no opportunity to play... He looked decent in the blue white game, and you can tell he has a nice stroke by watching him shoot jumpers in warm ups, just perplexing, can he really be THAT bad defensively?

Willis is answer to hitting threes. He has a nice stroke and if he got 5 consistent looks per game he would become a Cameron mills Scott Padgett hybrid.

There's probably a high school kid in the mountains shooting a high percentage from 3...does that mean he's good enough to play? Again, every team in the country has 12-15 guys on it...they don't all play. There's several teams that aren't ranked..should they put their benches in because they clearly aren't getting it done?

lol...were you wasted when you wrote this?^

I think we can all agree that Mulder is better than some high school kid in the mountains? He is 6"4 he's a decent athlete, he looks the part, he can shoot the ball fairly well, he has an aesthetically pleasing shooting motion, I just wanna see him get a little time with the starters... If he is that bad on defense, it will show and then he can get taken back out...

I'm with ya OP. I've been wondering that myself and maybe he'll get his chance soon. Until then, GO CATS!

I've seen a big enough sample size to know that the guy gets completely lost on D; repeatedly. I agree, he hasn't played a ton, but just seeing him for a minute on the floor, I could tell he had no clue, the speed was just too fast, and he did not know his shit. I hope he improves; he's a Cat and i would love to see another shooter on the floor. His shot does look good. I just think he's in over his head out there.

Very good shooter

But if he's not 'fighting' in practice he won't play.....you can shoot like Steph Curry but if you don't show hustle in other areas of the game, you don't play.....right or wrong, that's just the way it is with Cal

Willis looked good in the B/W game too; they all did. From whom do you take the minutes for Mulder to play?

You don't.......we have enough (too many) guards to split up
What we need and can't seem to find is a quality SF. Matthews
is not the ideal man. (We might not have one)
Rebounding could use a stronger body there,
Maybe 3 bigs like last year would be better, who could it be?
But with Lee, Poy, Skal, Willis, Hump, & Wynyard, is it possible
to find 3 who could play at the same time?
At least 4 of those have had some success from 15/20 ft out.

Disclaimer..........No, I don't go to practice.
I'm not smarter than Cal.
I can't evaluate talent.
I'm not in the HOF.

What i dont get....why go get a juco kid to sit the bench??? Explain that to me
Well remember back to that time, we didn't know we were going to get Murray and the other top recruits were committing/leaning to other schools. It's not like UK was his only option, Mulder had other teams interested. I doubt Cal promised him playing time, and I'm sure he knew the deal coming here. It's a tough break for a kid to sit on the bench, but you can only distribute so many minutes out a game.

I would assume that at the time Cal was recruiting Mulder/wanting him to sign, he did not know or was unsure of UK's position with Murray. Once Murray was on board, the writing was on the wall for Mulder; Even if Murray had not came to UK, I'm not totally sure Mulder would be seeing any more time than he already has.

Posted right before me,lol.

Well i understand Murray and Briscoe are better players than Mulder....however i am not sold on Murray being a better shooter so with Murray struggling from the arc i am not sure why Mulder couldn't get some minutes to build some confidence

I would rather use those mins building Murray's confidence.

I knew you guys would try to rationalize it and you made good points but if Cal hasn't played him with our woeful shooting...then he isn't gonna play

Just too deep for you to understand. Ask yo momma to splain it:cry:
What exactly do you two want? Equal mins for everyone? I do not understand why it is just hitting you that some player ride the bench. I know this may come as a shock, but look around the country. There are other players sitting on the bench waiting for their time to shine. Sadly, it may never come for them just like it may never come for Mulder.

Fact: Cal sees these players 70% more then we do the in our 2 games per week span.
Fact: Cal sees Mulder 99% more then we do because he doesn't play much

Lets just say hypothetically:
  • Mulder hasnt been knocking down shots in practice.
  • He is not in the gym working in his off time.
  • He shows up routinely on time (late) for practices
  • He never stay after
  • He puts in just enough effort to "get by"
Would you play Mulder or give him a chance then? Point is, we (fans) do not know what goes on when ESPN isn't broadcasting the game. That's all we see. Cal sees and hears everything. He makes the calls and who are we to question it?

CAL could actually do what Mitchell does now...CAL could carry an 8 or 9 man roster each year...after that those guys have no chance to play

Its a message board...thats what you do is question things...there wouldnt be a need for a message board otherwise

Willis has a nice stroke? I have to disagree with that statement. Lol. His stroke is about as awkward and weird as I've seen in a while. It almost looks like cocks his arm sideways or something. It's just weird looking. As long as it goes in, i dont care what it looks like. Lol.But I do see your point on what you're saying.

Cal doesn't hold a gun to these guys head and make them come. Plus he needs more then 8 or 9 for 5v5 during practice.

Rightfully so. It also wouldn't be much of a message board if you didn't get opinionated answers back to your question.

Thats fine he can have practice players and walkons for practice needs..but they are never gonna get meaningful time...which was my original point about Mulder...he was never gonna play...Murray or no Murray

Practice players arent going to get it done against NBA caliber players. Brian Long isnt going to do anything against Devin Booker

And how do you know this....?

Incredibly arrogant take on your part.

I can think of only one player that Cal offered a scholarship and probably didnt think the player would contribute in some way and that is Jon Hood. Cal respected the the previous offer.

Otherwise he has yet to take someone knowing they were not going to play.

Different coaches have different philosophies. Some coaches, like coach K would rather have shooters and teach them to play defense. One reason Duke is so famous for taking charges is because , for the most part , that's a lot of their players best defense. You have to be a patient coach to that though , just go back and look at how TERRIBLE Duke was on defense the first few months last year . Cal prefers athletes that can D up , get to the rim , and draw fouls . If you are not at least adequate on defense , you are not going to be in the game long enough to show your shooting ability . BOTH coaches are extremely successful at what they do and the style they play .

Maybe he can't hit them in practice any more than the other players.

He's not taking minutes from Matthews. He can't defend at all and he certainly can't rebound or get to the rim like Matthews. I think CM is doing a great job and will only get better.
