My take on Diallo (New Yorker's perspective)

You show nothing by saying Slice has no relationship with diallo,he's been recruiting him for two years and even learned to speak french to impress him.

I never said Slice has no relationship. You wouldn't do too well on reading comprehension tests..

First point, I think someone needs to understand there is a difference between being ranked among the top 20 players in a high school class and being projected as one of the top 20 picks in the NBA draft.

Second point, Dan Wetzel touched on this recently. He said what separates Cal and K from every other coach in the eyes of AAU/ 5 star world is the perception that they don't miss. You don't go to UK or Duke and lose draft position. That's probably not literally 100% true, but then few things in life are. Self is a good coach, but he has more misses than Cal. Perception is reality.....

I would agree with that statement---but if you go by percentages it has to be almost identical. I think Self has done a stellar job improving the draft status of less heralded players----this is more his bread and butter. Cal does better juggaling super talents and getting them to play together. But weaker points of each coach are complimented by their strengths.

Top 20 depending on which recruiting service ranked him.

I don't care what any draft board says, all that is is just speculation but some self proclaimed guru of what they think might happen. Twins were in no way lottery pics, a fool could of seen that.
McLemore was a projected late first round pic out if HS and would have been a guy ranked in the teens if he didn't have academic problems. He ended up gettig drafted top 10 if I remember right and he hasn't lived up to his billing so far but his career is still young. His school got shut down and he went to Oak Hill for a bit and then to another school. He didn't play at all his first year at KU. All reports indicated he was the best player for em in practice. Tough to develop a player that quick in just a month but I guess a Self can do that.

Lee was considered a top 20 player but that is just on potential as he wasn't exactly an offensive threat in HS and still isn't. Very athletic and promising young man yes but he isn't their yet. A project player.
I think Dakari should have stayed another year in HS, would have a better grasp on his abilities. What were his stats being a 7footer in HS? Bet they weren't eye popping either. He is a project player, personally I wouldn't draft him but I'm guess in some team will. For an inside presence.
Also does anybody here believe that a player will receive a bump in ranking if he commits to a high level school? I do.

McLemore is starting for Sacramento, averaged double figures, and is on a progression to be a good NBA player. He was ranked 42 coming out of high school. He practiced with the team during the second semester while sitting out and improved markedly. The Twins would been drafted in the top ten had they come out of high school. That's a fact. Dakari regressed from last year to this year. Cal doesn't have success with everyone and neither does Self. Don't forget the NBA is a futures draft based on what type of player you will be five years from now, not whether you are ready to play now.

How about Andrew Harrison and Aaron Harrison, top 10 recruits projected to go in the second round or undrafted? How about Alex Poythress, from top 10, about to enter his Senior year? How about Marcus Lee, top 15, about to enter his Junior year? How about Dakari Johnson, top 10, about to go in the second round of the draft?

The only reason Lee or Poythress were ever projected anywhere in the top 10-15 of their freshmen year is because of the "Kentucky effect". If they had went to Witchita St, Texas Tech, Missouri, etc there is no way they would have even received a mention of being drafted in the 1st round based on their freshmen performance.

OK fellas, so I'm new here, and I'm going to just go ahead and lay it out there and hope I don't get run off too badly. I'm a Jayhawk fan. That IN NO WAY means that I'm here to disrespect anyone on here or anything like that, but I look through this thread and I have to shake my head.

Kentucky, since Calipari came on board, has been on an absolutely unbelievable run, especially from a recruiting standpoint, so with that said, it would surprise absolutely NO one if Diallo were to end up in Kentucky. But you have to give OUR program and our coach the credit they deserve and not sell them short. Because I'm reading things on here like "Embiid is the only guy Bill Self has developed" and a bunch of nonsense like that, and I can't just sit back and let that slide.

Kansas has traditionally built around it's bigs. Look at the history of the players that have NOT ONLY been drafted out of Kansas, but went in the LOTTERY: Embiid, Jeff Withey, Thomas Robinson, Marcus and Markieff Morris, Cole Aldrich, Darrell Arthur (I think he went in the lottery, could be mistaken). NONE of these guys were projected as OAD guys when they came in (though only one of them turned out to be). But these are guys who, for the most part, spent time in the Kansas program and developed into lottery picks. So you can't sell Kansas short there, I just have to point that out.

With that said, there are PLENTY of reasons why Kansas would be attractive to Diallo, and that's not to say that he won't end up somewhere else. But playing time is not going to be an issue for him. Perry Ellis is coming back, and word is that Self is going to try to play him more on the wing as he prepares for the NBA (since he's not going to be a 4 if he gets there). He'll still get most of his minutes at the 4, but the other guys we have coming back are Jamari Traylor, Landen Lucas, Hunter Mickleson and Carlton Bragg coming in. The first three are NOT the typical caliber of frontcourt player that has traditionally started at Kansas, they're more suited to coming off the bench. Bragg, he's not proven anything yet. But we know that Bill Self tends to favor guys who give effort, and that's a strength of Diallo's. So it's not inconceivable that if he were to choose KU, that he could play himself into the starting rotation immediately based on that alone.

Again, not here to stir the pot or anything, and I'm hoping I don't get bashed too badly. Like I said, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see you guys get him, but I just wanted to throw my two cents in from a Jayhawks point of view.

I've covered the high school scene here in New York for a couple of years and here is my take on the Diallo situation.

During the high school season, his coach made it impossible to interview him. The coach and Diallo were very firm on not commenting on potential college choices and made it impossible to even get near Cheik to interview. During the Jordan practices, Cheik refused to talk to reporters. I get it, the kid was probably exhausted from all the travel.

Here is my take on the three schools:
St. John's: Don't think Slice has as much to do as you think. Slice has a good relationship with the coach, not Cheik. What makes St. John's appealing is that he will get all the PT he wants and they do play in the Garden from time to time. He won't lose much stock by going to St. Johns.

Kansas: Powerhouse, play time and a great coach to play for.

Kentucky: Well, we all know how great UK is. I will say that Cal has a way of getting players of his caliber (in terms of motor) and UK should be in a great position! I still think that Kansas is the toughest opponent and could very well get his pledge.

You said he had no relationship with the player
I never said Slice has no relationship. You wouldn't do too well on reading comprehension tests..
You wrote Slice has a good relationship with the coach not diallo, and that is just not right.I can read just don't believe what you wrote .
