Murray

I sure hope Murray was waiting to see where Brown was going to do. Then again maybe Murray will just go to some other random school on his list as well.

Funny how it takes a Brown commitment to another school to immediately start the Murray threads up again.

Some please answer a few questions for me.

1st: Why does everyone say we "need" him when he is labeled as a Point Guard and we already have two top PG's on the team.

2nd: Why does anyone think we would run a 3 PG line up? I assume now Poythress will play the 3, Lee 4, and 5 Skal.

3rd: What gives UK fans any feeling that he is even thinking about coming here? Does he have UK listed?Everyone keeps talking about him and even if he reclassifies, what makes him think he will go to UK and be a 3rd PG?

He is a great player and can score the ball, but doubt he would come to UK in 2015 to play SF.

He's a combo guard. There are worse things you can do in basketball than run a line up of 3 very skilled guards and 2 bigs.

He can shoot and score from the wing, something we really need. He's almost guaranteed a starters spot if he comes here and if running point is that important he'll get his share of opportunities to shine as one.

One thing that NBA scouts love is projecting a sg to be a pg in the nba. If he didn't play a lot of pg in college in a weird way it may boost his stock ala Westbrook and D'angelo Russell this year.

Poythress is not playing the three. Calipari has said it several times. Why do our fans keep insisting he will be playing the 3? It's not happening folks, figure it out.

Mmm
1. Have you seen him play?

2. Have you seen him play?

3. Why even recruit or field a team. Yes. Have you seen him play.

You answered your own questions but fail to understand the game and if he is any good. Maybe your really really young??

He will be the starting 2. Nobody in our backcourt is better than him. In our O their is no problem with Having 2-3 ball handlers. I've played on plenty of teams where 3 pg played. I played the 1-4 in some games before.

Obviously I made the thread because brown went elsewhere? It's common sense. We could really use his scoring ability, otherwise scoring will be at a premium. I'm not thrilled with Ulis being called on to be a scorer. I know skal should get his. But I could forsee briscoe not being able to light it up in a sense and Matthews isn't seen as a scorer (yes I know he put up good numbers). I just fear points will be definitely hard to come by. Blue glasses off, I don't see much better than a 4 seed with the current team. Rebounding could also be suspect. Love Ulis though. He's what makes me believe a run can be made. Just need more pieces man

Can we simply call this recruiting class a wrap and possibly save a little of our remaining dignity?

I guess a thread about a potential recruit is worse than crying over brown going elsewhere. I want murray to reclassify because no way he's ours in 2016. Apparently he can go straight to the league

What does my age have anything to do with it? I have seen enough basketball to know, and you've played 3 PG's in basketball before?!?! What in pickup ball? This is college were talking here...

Drew Franklin tweeted that he will have an update as soon as he gets back from the Derby

The 2005 Illinois team played 3 PG/combo guards, and they went to the title game.

Ulis = Dee Brown
Briscoe = Deron Williams
Murray = Luther Head

Maybe he'll give Winky 6whatever a scoop, he'll tell Matt Jones and Jones will enlighten the masses.

why are you calling him Luther Head? wow

Murray is a beast. He's a top 10 pick in any NBA draft. He'll be an instant plus to any team. I doubt duke since they just loaded up their backcourt with Thornton and Kennard with Jones and Allen already there. Uk will have great chance to land him if he reclassifies. Oregon will be right there also.

1. If Murray was coming to Kentucky he'd have visited this weekend.
2. 99.99 percent of people on this board couldn't have told you one thing about Murray before the Nike allstar game. People are very much overrating him because of that performance. I'd be happy if he signed at Kentucky but on a team with Ulis, Briscoe and Mulder at guard I don't think he's a difference maker. THe Cats need a legit small forward and a big-bodied interior player more.
Sorry, but Murray is the best gaurd in this class. Kid scores in bunches. He's better than Brown and you will see that wherever he ends up at.

4th: Strong possibility that he may not even choose to reclassify. Being an international player, he's not required to attend college before being drafted and could go to the league year earlier (ala Dante Exum) by not attending college and only fulfilling the NBA age requirement. Lots of pros and cons here, but this hurdle of a decision has to be decided upon by Murray before I think we start getting our hopes up about UK becoming a college destination.

People who do this for a living, and are not UK fans, are not "overreacting to one game". One said he would be ranked in the Top 10 of this or next year's class.

With Murray, we have a player that compliments both Ulis and Briscoe on the offensive end, especially running the DDMO.

Starters
G Ulis- ballhandler/passer/shooter/scorer.
G Briscoe- ballhandler/scorer/passer.
G Murray- shooter/scorer/ballhandler/passer.
F Poythress- rebounder/scorer/passer/ballhandler(good for a big).
F Labissiere- scorer/rebounder/shooter/ballhandler(very good for a big).

Key Reserves
F Lee- rebounder/passer.
G Mulder- shooter/scorer.

In the DDMO, everyone needs to be able to handle and pass. In a motion offense, positions do not matter as much on the offensive end. Sometimes your 4 or 5 will be at the top of the key with the ball. It's most effective when everyone is a threat to score from anywhere on the floor, but can also pass.

Initially, once a defensive rebound is secured, Ulis, Briscoe, or Murray will bring the ball up the floor. If they can, they will try to score in transition, if the defense stops their penetration, they kick it out and run the offense.

So, let's say Ulis has the ball, he initiates the offense. Briscoe will start on one wing, Murray on the other, Poythress at the top of the cricle opposite the ball, and Labissiere just off the block opposite the ball. If they are all threats to score, then the defense has to honor each player and it pulls the defense away from the paint.

Ulis now has his man one on one. If he can beat him, he goes to the rim. If his man plays off him, he can shoot the jumper. If he gets to the rim he shoots or gets fouled.

If he misses the shot Poy and Skal crash the boards for rebounds and get the put back. If someone helps, then Ulis kicks it to the open man, if the defense rotates, then they keep moving the ball until someone gets a good opening to drive or an open shot.

If Ulis is unable to get into the paint he passes off to Briscoe or Murray who rotate to the "point" while Ulis rotates to the wing. The other players rotate to other spots. So Briscoe and Murray will both see minutes at the "point" in this system.

This team has the potential to run this system very well. If Poythress was a better ballhandler and shooter, it would be even better.

Without Murray, this still works if Mulder and/or Matthews are able to give us good minutes.

Now defensively is where positions truly matter. That is the real value for Murray. Murray has the size we need on defense (6'5, 205, 6'7 wingspan) to matchup with most college SF's (or 3's).

I think we're more in need of a true 3, but there isn't one out there as skilled as we need so Murray would be a valued addition regardless of position. From what I've read though I'd call it unlikely. We're probably heading into next season with what we've got assuming Skal is eligible. That's the biggest concern I have. We have to have him.

I'm sure he'll go to Oregon or Colorado St or some shit like that
It is absolutely amazing to me that Calipari recruits arguably the top class in the country every year, ever since he got to Lexington - just signed Labissiere and Briscoe too -then, we have a couple of weeks of tough recruiting news and a large part of our fan base immediately develops this weeny attitude and turns on Coach. Unbelievable.

Poythress will not play the 3 and if Lee is your starting 4 we will be in trouble. I like Lee off the bench but not starting. I think Matthews will be better than people think.
