Murray on Wynyard

You know its funny, with Wynyard that looks like a 9 man rotation very similar to the one we had post-Poy last year. I know Cal said he won't platoon again, or anything like that and I believe him, but you could play 9 guys all 10 minutes minimum if Wynyard comes in and does well.

I think Cal will stick to his traditional 7-8 man rotation though an the 8th and 9th guys will get more spot minutes due to foul trouble and to rest the top 7. Which, as I said, was pretty much how it was last year by post-season play.

I think Wynyard will really surprise people with how good he is.He has really gotten in shape and improved so much.

I'm good with this. Thought we needed one more good wing and another serviceable post player to be really good, and, well, the last 24 hours seems to have checked both boxes.

I don't think Wynward will do much this season if he comes in December but I do like adding a bigger body this year for back up.

He's a guy who we need to play 5-10 minutes a game tops...unless he is better than we think and comes in and becomes a true rotation type player. He is a big body with some muscle and weight that can come in and take fouls and give our guys rest/help if 2/3 of Lee, Poy and Skal get in foul trouble. That will happen btw.

Is he the type of guy to leave early? If not, it seems like coming in December is a bad idea. Id hate to start the season and play till December as a senior and then not be eligible.

Cal knew what he was going to get all along, that smooth operator, I'm gonna ask him if he will let me know what's going on in the future so I can let you all know:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

i don't think he will get a lot of minutes this year, but next year he will be needed

i think we are going to have 5-6 guys leave after this year

yea I don't expect him to come in and bowl people over/dominate. Likely won't even play 5-8 minutes a game tops unless there's foul trouble. Will be nice to have the additional fouls.

Pretty much. I would prefer a tight 7-8 man rotation.

You can't point to Brandon Knight's team and say "see, you don't need a lot of bodies", we've had guys go down with knees twice and a big man not quality (Kanter) - I say you need more than 4 big's,

He won't do much BUT what he can and will do will be very important make no mistake about it. Hopefully getting guys better in practice, if we need him when there is real foul trouble, playing another teams big man for a few minutes and maybe a couple rebounds here and there. To me that's an important contribution.

Seven man rotation:

G Ulis
G Briscoe
G Murray
F Poythress
F Labissiere
6 Lee- top frontcourt reserve.
7 Matthews or Mulder- top backcourt reserve.

Wynyard will play spot minutes when we have foul trouble once he arrives. Like most everyone said, he'll get between 5-10mpg. Our rotation will already be set and he'll just fill in when we need him, IMHO.

Even if Wynyard does start playing in December, he won't be in game shape or know the system well enough to get many minutes. Unless someone gets hurt, I think he will get mop-up minutes or spell the bigs if they are in foul trouble, but I don't see more than 5 mins a game to be honest.

i knew the platoons were over too when it came from the horse's mouth. yet he we are stocked to the brim again. just not too many college 5's this time face it, if dakari played 28 minutes a night for some other team he would have had a nice year with those extra reps. imo it held him back, but won't really hurt his drafting position, maybe a few spots. cal won't let that happen again, wcs came back and that is that. even if he played better than expected he would not have started over aa wcs and #1 kat.

now we have guys who can play multiple positions. and i see cal doing a lot of situational stuff with matthews, lee, mulder. a lot like he did with liggins, miller, jones in '11. unfortunately this also means we will likely see willis and hawkins at the same rate as last year. we need to add hawk to the list of reasons why our back court is insane. guy is technically our 4th pg. that is freaking crazy.

The thing is, what we'll need him for is the perfect role to fill if you come in late. It's not like he's a PG that has to learn to run the offense, or a wing who has to find his shot. He's going to be big and strong and physical whether that's in December or August.

By SEC Tournament time, he'll be in the groove. That means we have our full roster for the Big Dance. It's more about having him in case he's needed, or to spell someone for a few minutes, or at the very least, to be a year more advanced for next season.

Zero downside.

Wynyard probably battles Willis for second big off the bench when he gets here. Kinda thinking Wynyard wins the battle since Willis doesn't seem to be up for fighting for his spot.

Agreed, he will come in later in the games fresh and that will help a lot.

I don't think Willis is going to play at all this year. We know that Ulis, Briscoe, Murray, Poythress, Labis will get majority of minutes. Then we have Matthews, and Mulder, and Lee. Thats 8 players. With Wyn in Dec thats 9. Willis would make 10 players. I could be wrong, but I don't think Willis is going to see any significant minutes this year. Will be same ole same ole for him.

Being a lumberjack, and not a bowler, I expect him to cut people down at the rim. :)

Probably right on Willis.

If we get in foul trouble, he'll get a shot.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of 4 guard when we have foul trouble, as well.

4 guards would be fun, and will work in spurts with this team. I wish we had ran some 4 guards at times in games last year, but get why Cal could not/would not do that.
