In another thread I mentioned I was looking into coaches that had won multiple titles. There are six coaches who have three or more titles. They are John Wooden, Coach K, Adolph Rupp, Bobby Knight, Jim Calhoun and Roy Williams. If you were going to create a Mt Rushmore for the sport and you had six slots, would these be the faces you would put on it? If not, who gets added, who gets replaced and why?

James Naismith, Phog Allen, Claire Bee, Adolph Rupp, John Wooden, and Coach K

Rupp, K, Wooden are givens. Then it depends on what criteria you use. There is probably a good argument for Pitino. Dean Smith hurt the game in my opinion and did less with more, I can’t include him. Calhoun? I think the fact that UConn sucks so bad now only helps his cause. Ole Roy. Probably so. The fake classes hurt him but he was a hell of a coach. Knight. No just because I hate him.

I definitely wouldn't put Calhoun on there. I don't think he's in the same category as the others. Knight was a great coach, there is no denying it, but when you factor in his issues, he loses his spot in my mind. Roy Williams is a proven cheater, though the NCAA lacked the cajones to bring the hammer down on UNC. I don't think I would include him, either. James Naismith probably belongs there simply because he invented the game. I'd put Dean Smith in before Roy Williams. I'd put Jim Boeheim in before Bob Knight. I don't care for him or his style, personally, but it's hard to argue with 998 wins.

Boeheim? Do what?

4 does make it easier. the OP asked for 6, which is why I answered as I did. But even with 4, I'm leaving out Knight. My 4 would be Rupp, Wooden, K, and Naismith.
Right on, but I’m a little OCD. Don’t ask me what’s the Mount Rushmore and then let me pick 6, lol

I'm fine with replacing Knight with Naismith simply because of what Naismith means to the game. As far as on court results of coaching I think this top 4 is pretty inarguable.

No, I agree. Knight was a great coach and there is no denying it credibly.

The title of your thread is Mt. Rushmore Of College Coaches. There are only 4 faces on Mt. Rushmore, not 6:

1. J. Wooden
2. P. Summitt
3. A. Rupp
4. B. Knight

I won't vote for Rat Face. I just won't.

Putting Bobby Knight on the Mt Rushmore of coaches is a disgrace and an insult to the sport. First of all, his numbers are based on pure longevity. He coached for 5 decades but was only relevant for two of them. Compare it to Coach K, it’s laughable they would even share the same space let alone on Mt Rushmore.

His behavioral problems and overall instability as a person also does not do him any favors. I would never consider Woody Hayes to be on college football Mt Rushmore for the same reason. These are madmen not to be admired or embraced.

Lastly, he’s a Hoosier. I’d run that mountain into the ground before letting a yokel Hoosier get put up there. Construction could be halted easily considering Hoosiers are all stuck in the 80s and have no idea what’s going on in the present.

Yeah, I hear you. I don't particularly care for his 2-3 zone or his personality. But he is #2 on the all-time wins list, only trailing Coach K.
Well. When you’ve been coaching at the place where they will essentially bury you for eternity that’s easy to do.

For those saying Jim Boeheim...are you talking about this Jim?

Or this Jim B?

Pete Rose is the all time hits leader, but I wouldn't say he is the best hitter to ever live.
Would agree but longevity wise he is. Guy had over 100 hits at 44 years old. For comaprison sake at same age...

Ichiro 9 hits at 44
Cobb 114 hits at 41
Williams 98 hits at 41
Bonds 98 hits at 42
Gwynn 33 hits at 41

Rose definitely not the best pure hitter of all time but guy breaks hit record clean and played for 24 years. Pretty wild.

I agree the longevity was impressive. I loved watching Charlie Hustle.

"Mt. Rushmore" implies a kind of foundational memorial. ("These are the men who made us what we are!") Once you add too many contemporary figures, you've created just another PR trinket.

This is a great thread and idk who id choose. That’s when you know it’s a good Q

wooden + k. After that, who else? Rupp Roy (hate that last one ) if I was forced. But the criteria is so open. Wright at Nova is as impressive as Roy being at two blue bloods IMO

iDK as a Kansas fan who id even nominate. 5 perhaps. Not sure who could win tho

That is correct. I would go with Naismith, Phog allen, Rupp, Wooden, and no more
