More Valuable - 5* From Elsewhere, or a 3/4* KY Kid with Heart?

Look man. Briscoe was pretty good most of the time, except for when he sucked which happend. But if Briscoe was from Kentucky he would be coming back to finish his degree and improve his jumpshot. Think about that.

And if Briscoe was from Kentucky, he would be loved by 99% of the fan base regardless of his shortcomings. Unfortunately, instead, he was the whipping boy when he was here.

It's pretty simple. You recruit the best of the best. If one of those is from KY, great. Sign him up. If he's not UK material, let him go elsewhere.

Give me ad, cousins, mkg, monk and wall and I will whip your teams ass by 20 to 30 every game.

Coach Cal gave miller good coaching and he was not our best player ever. What a silly take by you.
I never said that Miller was our best player every. Silly if that's what you understood from any of my posts.

We're the KENTUCKY WILDCATS if you haven't noticed. Not the 5* Wildcats or California Wildcats or New York Wildcats. We are the KENTUCKY WILDCATS!!!! I sure wish Mr. John Calipari would recognize that and quit recruiting all these guys from all over that don't want to be here. Let's get back to making this about Kentucky. Coach them Kentucky boys up some Cal. If your such a good coach, you can coach up them kids with heart. Guys like Briscoe don't even want to be here.
We would really really really really suck, you realize that don't you.

Years ago, the state of Kentucky produced some very good basketball players. Almost every year there were one or two top flight players from our state. Players like Jack Givens, Dirk Minnifield, Winston Bennett, and Rex Chapman used to dot our roster year in and year out.

I don't know why but it seems like these types of players are now pretty rare. The only player from last year even close enough to garner a scholarship from Kentucky was Taveon Hollingsworth (sp) and even he would've had a hard time getting any significant playing time in the next couple of years.

The bottom line is putting together a team that will compete for a championship. It just can't happen with a bunch of Kentucky boys. Not anymore, at least.

Where they are from hardly define whether they represent UK best or not.

Not sure why people believe that Kentucky players play harder than non-kentucky player at UK.

In Cal's tenure if you asked, who represented UK the best...no one would mention Miller, Willis, Hood, or Hawkins. MKG or Towns would be popular picks. Davis in terms of his play. Wall would be another.

If you isolate yourself with the notion of a small state. You'll fall behind and disappear into nothing. Probably like IU.

Hope UK will get the best players internationally.

What we don't want is a Chris Lofton punishing us from a rival school. If a kids from Ky and can play we better make sure we find a spot for him.
Lofton never bothered me. I was happy to see him do well. Every player needs to do what's best for themselves.

I'm tired of hearing about this mystical "heart" thing that only locals can have. I can't think of any instance of the OADs not valuing the program. Like some have pointed out, Briscoe got crap for two years here but hit the floor on loose balls like he was an Unforgettable. Same thing in my book.

I cried when I saw Fox and Bam were in tears after the UNC game. They may not have been Kentucky bred, but they represented UK with class, pride, and bled blue the same way as any backyard Kentucky high school player.

Btw, Mickey Pearson, Jr. (2018) from E-Town looks like a REAL baller!! I don't know/care what he'll be rated next year, but I sure would like to see him in a UK uniform!!

The cool thing about these type threads are you can see who gives uk fans a bad name with delusions of grandeur.

Very true! I'm not sure where this type of player has gone. They were as good as anyone nationally, now they're non-existent. Makes me wonder if they do exist, but due to recruiting such elite talent, the chance to become those KY-bred UK heroes are over? How good could a Miller/Hawkins have been if they had a larger role in playing time? We may never know. Certainly not disappointed in the outcomes. It's not been a bad thing, just more of an observation that the KY-bred players of yesteryear were so good probably because they were the ones who got the significant playing time, and therefor developed into those levels.

Sure glad you're not the coach. Your team would struggle to win a game.

Well, we all have a heart in order to survive. That said, give me a 2-3 star player like Cameron mills, Ravi moss, Willis/Hawkins, a South American pg, and a bunch of 5 star players from anywhere and I'll take that all day. The days of teams like the unforgettables are gone. It is what it is. If we had the kind of talent in the state of ky that North Carolina, Texas, Illinois, or California puts out then we would have a chance of having a team full of 5 star players from the state. The brutality honest truth is, a guy like oj mayo only comes around once every ten years and unless he grew up a uk fan he wants to be the man and we can't guarantee him that. Even though he was from Ohio kennard could of been similar to the criteria required as he and his family grew up as uk fans but from Ohio. I'd say he would of played here with just as much heart as he did for puke

Briscoe got crap from a very small but vocal minority because it's frustrating to watch a shooting guard that A. can't shoot and B. had elite skills in the paint but when he got fouled he could barely hit 40% of his ft's (his 1st year) He had to do the intangibles because of his short comings in other areas.

It wasn't that I was unhappy for Lofton.. I was unhappy with our coaching staff for not making him a Cat. As a fan I want to see Kentucky kids that can play on our team. It doesn't mean they'll have more heart than a 5 star ie Willis (bless his heart) it's just fun for the fans and great for the team to have 3 or 4 year players. We would not have made the Elite 8 without Hawkins. Was it because of his Mystical heart? No.. It was because it was so special for Cliff being a Wildcat that he stuck around and sat on the bench until he could contribute. He had experience that we needed. He could've done what Charles Matthews did and transferred. He could've started for most SEC teams.

A team with mainly Kentucky kids would do about as well as the Kentucky all stars have done against the Indiana all stars over the last decade.

The high schools accross the state are more football oriented than basketball. Maybe it was different before consolidation but I'm not sure.

I think some residents of the commonwealth have foggy memories of how good our state's basketball has been through the years. I believe all the midwestern states have better high school traditions.
