Crimson Tide freshman running backDesherrius Flowers, who was an early enrollee, will not be cleared for enrollment at Alabama this fall because of a recently discovered initial eligibility issue, Alabama Athletics announced Wednesday. Flowers arrived at UA in January and participated in the team's spring practices and spring scrimmage.

Flowers will reportedly enroll in a junior college this fall, BamaOnLine has learned. The exact JUCO is uncertain at this time.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban also announced Wednesday that defensive backJonathan Cook is "no longer a member of the team." Cook played in three games last season as a redshirt freshman. There were no other details released.

Looks like Harris made a good decision based on all of the suspension, transfer and eligibility issues at Bama.

Yet Bama will be at 85 scholarshipped players come Aug. Just part of how they run their program, the annual march to 85 that begins after spring practice and last till they get to 85.

Yes that somehow happens every year at Bama. Crean at IU and Saban at Bama, 2 peas in a pod. I don't see how they do so well in recruiting when your head is on the chopping block every year if you don't perform to their suiting or they need to make room for the next guy coming in to get creaned.

All these kids have a big ego, no matter how many times they are told if you aren't in the 2 deep at Bama there is a chance you get processed, but in their mind there is no way they aren't going to walk on campus and be in the 2 deep, likely starting.

Perhaps. If he's forced to play early, he'll get about 10 plays to prove he's the next Trent Richardson before he gets passed over.

Sometimes college football players can't meet eligibility requirements. It happens in all programs.
Yeah, sometimes it does, even to us with guys.

Pretty damned strange that they thought he met them enough to enroll in December and go through Spring practices, though. That doesn't happen much.

You're right, it sounds strange. But this is not a rules issue, and not a big deal for their program. They manage their program right on the edge all the time with the 85 scholarship limit. This was their plan for getting the player enrolled. It didn't work out, and they will move on to the next highly rated athlete. End of story.

Sounds like they were not impressed with his tryout at spring camp and didn't pull their strings to get him eligible.

Guess they didn't have anyone come up with a hangnail or infected ear that they could shift out of the 85 football scholarships & onto the "medical" free ride, so this kid got dinged to get them at the proper numbers.

Alabama may be "just fine" but I'd be surprised if they are better than 10-2 at the end of the regular season. Of course to the rest of us, 10-2 would be a banner year.

Yeah, 10-2 in the SEC West is pretty good in a down year, which I think this year will be for Bama. I think they will lose to AU on the road, and at least one more. I don't see any SEC team going 12-0 or even 11-1 this year. I hope I'm wrong.

bama's problem will be with qb play. mark my words, they will lose games just like that driskell led florida team did... they will simply have games that they can't score enough to win. haha, i know highest score wins... but they are gonna have games that if you can score 30 on them.. you win.

Doesn't sound like too much of a problem. Maybe the NC scandal has numbed my alarm reaction.

Pull the strings? LOL! Requirements for enrollment are what they are. If you play with fire, you get burned. Manipulating the rules brings negative attention, something Alabama does not need. Saban has more than enough players, doesn't need to pull strings for Flowers. Every school occasionally signs players who can't enroll. This has become less common since the rules were changed to count non-qualifiers against the signing limits, but it will always happen everywhere.
