More on ESPN's Financial Troubles

Honestly, ESPN is really only worthy for some games or 30 for 30. That said...

If ESPN knew what their viewers beliefs were, this wouldn't be happening. Liberalism is a disease and if it were up to me, anyone who is not a conservative should be shipped off to some island and kicked out of the country. America is great and we don't need them here. We need things to go back to the way they were. Things were great in the 50s and 60s and then certain "movements" happened that contributed to the downfall of this country. Look swhere we are now. You can't say anything nowadays. If I don't like "certain" people and think they don't deserve rights, who cares? You should not be allowed to criticize me for it and I should suffer no consequences.

The PC left leaning ESPN liberal crap needs to go and all the lay offs are a good thing. I like it when people lose their jobs, especially the liberals. They deserve it. I don't like people who don't believe in Conservative values and I think politics should stay out of sports, ESPECIALLY if it's stuff I don't agree with (even though I'll say I don't care what someones beliefs are, I really do care. It bothers me cause it's not what I believe and I'm not adult enough to deal with it).

Whatever you do, don't tell me John Calipari is a Democrat (which is true), I just want to leave that stuff out of this. Why? Because I find it hard to root for my Cats when the coach don't agree with me and he is actually some liberal democrat. Yuck!

So anyway the world is better off without people who aren't conservative and I think that liberals (and ESPN) are ruining this earth and they should all be deported or punched in the face. Yeah I said it.
By the way, I'm a husband, father and Christian and (insert a bible passage here).
God Bless!

Wow. I don't even know what to say to that. "Certain movements"? That is one of the least subtly racist things I've ever heard. I'm ashamed of you. My guess is you're about 70 years old, and on your way out. All I can say is with that complete disregard for the lives of so many Americans, we'll be better off without you.

You may call yourself a Christian, but you are NOT Christlike with that attitude. He helped the least of us, and you just blatantly made it clear you hate half of this country. Pure garbage.

I'm assuming he's making fun of people who have said they don't listen because of political crap. Funny thing is everyone has said they want sports to be politics free but it doesn't matter. I'll bet if they went ultra religious and had on air personalities give mini sermons and stopped to pray occasionally that people would comment that they don't like being preached too watching sports... And these people who make jokes on this side, would be on the other side explaining why they don't watch anymore.

Oh quit whining, you snowflake. If Jesus were alive today, you better bet he'd be a Republican and I guarantee he would HATE ESPN and REALLY HATE liberals. He'd be all about that wall and he'd tell people to stop being so lazy, I can tell you that much.

I agree, and that is a "really good" analogy. I mean, comparing mini sermons and prayers and ultra religious stuff on ESPN to what they are doing on air now, but imagining it being just the other side of things. ESPN is so hard core about preaching politics! Great comparison.

I also like playing the "I'll bet if...." game. That stuff is the best. My favorite was the poster in the other ESPN is liberal thread that said "Did you notice that most of the layoffs were white people?" (who the hell takes the time to look into that?). Poster then says "Can you imagine if they weren't all white, what the outrage would be?" I love it! Those people are the best! They go around saying "Imagine if" or "I'll bet if.... insert race or political party and outrage over coverage or lack thereof" I agree! Typical liberal PC crap. It needs to go!

Let's hear more "I'll bet if...." stuff... oh wise ones.

Did you know Donald Trump was a registered Democrat for the first 60 years of his life? Did you know he and the Clintons have been friends for decades? Turn the Fox News off for a minute and take a deep breath.

I think we're approaching a point where its a good idea to close this thread.

This has certainly turned into one of the more bizarre threads we've seen in awhile.

Truth is ESPN, like all mega-businesses, wants to make money. Lots and lots of money. Now they're losing money, that's a problem so they moved to correct it. A simple fact is if you can help ESPN, or anyone else, make lots and lots of money they could care less about your politics, race or religion. To think otherwise is silly.

I used to love ESPN. I loved the Sunday 'big show' with Patrick and Olbermann. It was pretty fresh and, at the time, original. I still watch 30 for 30's and a game I'm interested in. I like OTL with Bob Ley.

Their self-congratulatory "This is Sportscenter" ads have gotten soooo played out. So played. Then they started inventing these random topics during the slower time (after the NBA playoffs) like "Where is Titletown" and "Who's Now?" They would have different ESPN personalities argue about whether Kobe or Tiger was more 'now'. WTF does that even mean?

they did seem to make their talent the "show" instead of the athletes at times. but its been so long since ive watched sportscenter i dont even know what the "who's now" thing is.

Yeah, that's when I gave up the ghost, and I think ARod's $200,000,000 contract was almost 20 years ago. Don't watch the pros in football, my first love, unless a UK player is playing, and then he has to be a star, Cobb about the only one right now. Warford doing great, but not enough action for me.

But hey, how about UK's baseball AND softball teams, both doing great, watched the baseball team win (on ESPN's SEC network, naturally) yesterday (three of four from top ten teams, and they CRUSHED #2 Transfer U) and followed the softball teams victory (top 20) on the Official UK Sports network, (broadcast on WLAP)..
I'm right there with you.

I used to love pro sports back in the 60's and 70's, but the strikes and thugs that encroached on pro sports, I started losing interest. I only watch "amateur" sports for the most part, only catching highlights of UK players every now and then.

I'm going to next weekend to watch UK/GA in baseball with $2 tickets and $1 hot dogs.

They stretched themselves too thin. They had a magazine (print is dying), a bevy of different networks (including SEC), repetitive coverage all over the place and they could never figure out how to sell their online content (like ESPN3.com).

They had too much going on and not enough financial backbone to support it. To make up for it, they're firing their top-shelf people and hiring hacks at low salaries. It's the first sign of a sinking company.

Well they did keep pushing the Michael sams story way past news, they did perpetuate the hands up don't shoot even after it was documented that it was inaccurate, and they did give Bruce Jenner a courage award for cutting off his manhood... Or look at their last 5 or so winners of the courage award and you see its pretty politically correct.

If they were truly vanilla more people would watch that are diehard sports fans. They'd at least watch sportscenter before going to bed. It's not just the cord cutters hurting them. People who have ESPN just don't watch the vast majority of their shows.

Should add I have a lot of family that are in law enforcement. I feel a lot of inaccurate reporting put cops in danger and ESPN helped fan those flames in a very impartial way. Cops died because of anger over falsely reported stories.

Another case of how eventually the sports bubble is going to burst. Coaches and athletes better load up their contracts now because I can see a time where the money won't be there like it has been in the past. Many fans are tired of paying ridiculous prices for tickets and concessions, dealing with obnoxious fans around them, high cable bills, etc.
This. I can't even take my kids to a good game.

Maybe the UNC powers that be at ESPN could hold fake live sporting events and say they are for everyone and not just the sports fans?

Did you fail to detect the obvious sarcasm in the posts from Cats78? I didn't. But the joke's on Cats78. Because, notwithstanding his ridiculous parody of what he apparently believes is the typical conservative viewpoint, the constant left-wing slant of ESPN actually does hurt ESPN business. It's not the only factor in the catastrophic decline of ESPN profitability...but it is indeed a factor.

Let's look at it this way. If you are a liberal, and I suspect that you probably are, how would you like to watch a sports network that constantly and pervasively shoves a hard right political perspective down your throat? Chances are, after a while, you'd get fairly sick of it. That's exactly how many people currently are feeling about it (if you doubt that, read some of the comments in response to various ESPN articles which double down on their decision to mix sports and progressive politics). Assume that 50% of America is left of the American center by definition, and that 50% of America is right of it. It might also be safe to assume that sports fans might, just as a group as a whole, lean a bit more to the right than does the public as a whole (and, in fact, there is data that shows exactly that). It's not a great business model to alienate that many viewers. Not that I'm suggesting that ESPN should just instead switch to shoving right wing propaganda down viewers' throats. I've got an even better idea. How about let's leave political crap out of it altogether? How about let's focus on sports?

Excellent point, but it's probably directed to the wrong crowd. Most Fox News viewers are already aware of this- some became #NeverTrumpers because of it. SJW's and antifas, on the other hand, need to be reminded of this on a daily basis. They seem to believe that Trump is a cross between Hitler and the Devil himself, with the Devil being right-wing, of course.

I've been around too long - talk of ESPN showing Australian football reminds me of Wide World of Sports and watching German 4 man bobsled team go off course or ski jumping on weekends.
Now ESPN is over hyping all their shows so much so the SC doesn't cover half the nightly activity but spends 10-15 minute segments on postgame of their own events.
And you wonder what happened to ESPN...they left what got them here and tried to take over every bowl game, NBA game and the MLB games are always moved to 8 pm and include NY, Boston or St Louis.
It will be interesting, but I think ESPN will survive as SEC network regionally rather than ESPN3, ESPN News and ESPN U.

As a side note, ESPN is owned by Disney, whose stock keeps going up like a rocket, so it must not be all gloom and doom, at least in terms of the overall corporate profit

ESPN has basically done the exact same thing that MTV did back in the day when they decided they didn't want to just show videos. I use Sling and pay an extra $5 to get espn/espn2/espnU/SEC Network and a couple others. For cable that's probably an extra $20, which is ludicrous.

Pricing models for some of these networks cannot continue. People are cutting the cord at exponential rates. I pay $25/month for Sling and have everything I need or want to watch. Of course I also have Netflix so my total entertainment budget is around $35/month. I was paying well over $100/month with DirecTV. I don't miss it a bit.

ESPN is in big trouble over the next few years. The whole old school sports model is crumbling as there are so many other things to do now for entertainment. Millennials and the generation after that don't give a flip about sports for the most part. At least nowhere near the numbers that they based all their forecasting numbers on.

I think golf is in bigger trouble than Nascar. The majority of golf's market are on the back nine to death. In 10-15 years you're gonna see a huge decline in golf courses and it wouldn't shock me if golf never makes it back to prime tv again because no one will care.

That's what I've been saying! You're such an intelligent person! It's the damn liberals that run ESPN and they didn't stick to sports and that is why they are failing! Yay! Yay to lost jobs and yay to the lefty stuff failing! Wahoo!
It's not really liberal vs conservative. I wouldn't watch even if they were offering right wing news. If that's what I want to see ESPN is the last network on the dial that I would turn to. They hosting content that not only offends half their audience but even the other half have no interest in.

The sad thing is the layoffs have centered around the personalities that do focus on the news and not the culture war issues. The ones that engage in culture war issues are keeping their jobs which shows that ESPN is in total denial. Their level of detachment is what you see when most corporations open up battle fronts with their consumers. And they typically end up going out of business or close to it.

As a side note, ESPN is owned by Disney, whose stock keeps going up like a rocket, so it must not be all gloom and doom, at least in terms of the overall corporate profit
ESPN is a small piece of the Disney empire. A very small piece, which is amazing to think about. Disney is in everything these days. Hell the Stars Wars franchise is probably worth more than ESPN.

This is why SEC needs to start hedging by strategically adding programs that will bring the fans, alumni bases, and overall viewership.

As I stated in another post and will continue to state, the SEC needs to finish off their westward expansion and conquer the east texas triangle of Houston, SMU, and Baylor. That little slice of pie is one of the more populated regions in the country and growing. Those 3 programs have large alumni bases and the people of Texas are rabid sports fans. Bringing those schools into the fold will ensure that the SEC gets a premium on TV deals.

ESPN may not want or be able to pay that premium, but somebody will.

I would agree with the sports bubble conversation as well. However, I do think that it will effect pro sports to a greater degree than college sports and that may actually help drive up the price for the best and most competitive upper ranks of college athletics. SEC is going to be able to go to espn or whomever with some leverage due to the pro product not being quite as profitable but the collegiate game being maybe even more popular than ever before. Which is why Football needs to hurry up on expanding the playoffs, which will increase it's value even more.
Speaking of the SEC, the SEC network hasn't followed ESPN's lead on this. I actually do watch SEC network even when UK isn't playing. They are still covering sports the way ESPN used to do and it still works. Even their discussion oriented programming is good.

How about those Nascar ratings?
Nascar is a different story. Nascar tried to go corporate. They cracked down on fighting and even bumping other cars during races. They even cracked down on some of the things fans do like a couple of years ago the stopped any fan carrying a confederate flag. They also now have a field of drivers that look like backup singers for Nsync. Nascar made the mistake of going away from it's southern roots and in doing so lost all character. You can say Nascar did the same thing as ESPN because they lost contact with their audience but it's clearly for different reasons.

Can you get the ESPN package for just 6 months and cancel? And can you get sec network on its own or is it bundled? I'm going streaming this fall if the internet speed improves.

Disney was fine and thriving long before ESPN. Now that they own the Star Wars universe, that alone is worth billions. Go ahead and pencil in over a billion every time they release a new star wars story over the course of the next 15 years. That's just world wide box office and not including the the money they will make from merchandise, dvd, online streaming, tv airings of the movies, toys, lunch boxes, bed sheets, etc for eternity.

ESPN was never going to negatively affect Disney, their issues are about the same as a toilet not working at one of the theme parks in terms of overall effect on the entire company.

Truth is, I watch way more EPL, Bundesliga, & Champions League than NFL & just about any sport other than CFB. Tape about a dozen games a week.

Actually it's month to month, so you can cancel it anytime. The SEC network is bundled with the 'sports' pack but again it's $5 month for all of them.

^^^^What he said. $5 a month is a helluva bargain for all the ESPN networks and you can carry it month to month. Like Danny Trejo says...."why pay a hundred bucks a month for channels you never watch?"

What speed internet you need for it to be viable to watch in 2 different rooms? I'm thinking mine is dsl 16mb per second or something. The internet thing is the only thing holding me up. Louisville is getting fiber this summer so hopefully that finds its way out to the burbs.

Need to make professional sports franchises state owned/run affairs, control player salaries, and turn profits to the public treasury... kind of like state lotteries. Yeah, I'm just a crazy Commie.

If socialized medicine were called "single payer" would socialized sports be "single player?" Hey, are you for a state sponsored church . . . . "Single prayer," or have you gone bat-sh!t commie and denied God?

Liberalism is a disease and if it were up to me, anyone who is not a conservative should be shipped off to some island and kicked out of the country. America is great and we don't need them here. We need things to go back to the way they were. Things were great in the 50s and 60s and then certain "movements" happened that contributed to the downfall of this country. Look swhere we are now. You can't say anything nowadays. If I don't like "certain" people and think they don't deserve rights, who cares? You should not be allowed to criticize me for it and I should suffer no consequences.

Cats78, within 70 words you have hit the nail on the head for our political/social problems . . . . weak mindedness and hypocracy, ON BOTH SIDES OF EXTREMISM.

To paraphrase your quote, "Liberals should be banned from the country, and conservatives (who feel threatened by political/social pressure) should not suffer any consequences for thought/expression."

SO, those you feel are trying to limit YOUR ideas/rights, should simply be removed from the country, and no one "should be allowed to criticize me for it."

Weak mindedness in its simplest form, spawned by the stupidity of the Fox versus MSNBC culture, in which "liberals" can scarcely define the Utopian society they hope to achieve, short of destroying "classical liberalism" and in which "conservatives" shudder when confronted by the question of what they hope to actually "conserve."

Cats78, you live in a country where you can literally say anything you like, including wearing a sheet, a swastika, and/or a hammer and sickle . . . . and we have always had these rights . . . . the challenge we as a society face is limiting the power of those nuts of the left and right who would do just as you propose . . . . literally kill or ban those with whom they disagree, rather than formulate a response.

You may get your wish, but I can assure you that if it were to come true, Conservatism in all its definitions will have been the greatest victim.

(OK, upon review, I can see the sarcasm, especially in the next Cats78 post . . . . he says in his first "America is Great," and then in his second, he pulls out the Red Cap, "Make Ameri . . . . . which contradicts the first . . . . OK Cats78, you were the Fisherman Ass and I was your Large Mouth Bass for the day.)

wow - you are very good at sprouting words that have no roots -

Some Key Quotes from your Right Wing Conservative president who is more liberal than Johnson /Weld ticket that I voted for:

Examples of Proof: (I Know a Neo-Facist like yourself may not read much - but try it)

1. Trump supported government-provided health care. Doubt me? Here’s the key exchange from a September 27, 2015, interview on 60 Minutes: Donald Trump: There’s many different ways, by the way. Everybody’s got to be covered. This is an un-Republican thing for me to say because a lot of times they say, “No, no, the lower 25 percent that can’t afford private.” But –

Scott Pelley: Universal health care?

Donald Trump: I am going to take care of everybody. I don’t care if it costs me votes or not. Everybody’s going to be taken care of much better than they’re taken care of now.

Scott Pelley: Make a deal? Who pays for it?

Donald Trump: The government’s gonna pay for it. But we’re going to save so much money on the other side. But for the most it’s going to be a private plan and people are going to be able to go out and negotiate great plans with lots of different competition with lots of competitors with great companies and they can have their doctors, they can have plans, they can have everything.

2. Trump supported raising taxes. And he keeps supporting raising taxes. Again, here he is in that same 60 Minutes interview:

Scott Pelley: Who are you going to raise taxes on? Donald Trump: If you look at actual raise, some very wealthy are going to be raised. Some people that are getting unfair deductions are going to be raised. But, overall, it’s going to be a tremendous incentive to grow the economy and we’re going to take in the same or more money. And I think we’re going to have something that’s going to be spectacular.

3. Trump supported large-scale touchback amnesty for illegal immigrants. Yes, the man who wants to build a wall and deport ’em all also said this: I would get people out and then have an expedited way of getting them back into the country so they can be legal. . . . A lot of these people are helping us . . . and sometimes it’s jobs a citizen of the United States doesn’t want to do. I want to move ’em out, and we’re going to move ’em back in and let them be legal. Also note that he buys the “jobs Americans won’t do” justification for large-scale, low-skill immigration:
