Nick Plummer is the first UK player/commit to go off the board and he goes 23rd to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Vanderbilt already has 3 guys drafted, which is expected, but just amazing that they have 3 top 25 players on their roster, including the best player in the country.

Kentucky had the undisputed best player in the country last year and what good did it do...When Henderson should have pitched him the first game against Otis he screwed up royally...When we get this disaster of a staff out of town the better off the program will be, assuming MB doesn't make the same mistake twice in a row...I mean how many times to you get to miss making the ncaa tourney and not get fired...Hell, Otis is making a laughing stock out of our bb program and this is the first year they have really played some decent competition:flush::flush:[eyeroll]

Honest question here. Just for debate. Is there an advantage of going to college for three years compared to going straight to the minor leagues? Other than the injury aspect, what are the pros and cons?

Well, probably not a whole lot when you are drafted in the first round. You could technically improve your draft pick and make more money, but you take on a whole lot of risk doing that. It is really hard to tell with the MLB draft though. A lot of players might be taken a lot higher, but they just don't show the proper amount of interest in professional baseball so the MLB teams don't want to take risks on them in early rounds. Dansby Swanson is probably a pretty good example of this. He was taken in the 38th round, but he was probably much better than the 38th round. However, he was either demanding too much money or he was wanting to go to college so teams did not want to take the risk on him. He might have been a top 5-10 round draft pick, but now he has played his way all the way to number 1 overall. Where it really plays off is for someone like Reed, who was not going to be a high draft pick and who played his way up there thanks to three years of college development.

Another SEC player off the board as Tennessee's Christin Stewart is picked 34th to the Tigers.

Draft seems like it's all about what you think you are worth. Was watching the Matt Harvey dark knight rises thing and he wanted 2 mill out of high school after being taken late 1st or early second. They were offering 1 mill. He declined, move up to top 10 after 3 years and got his 2+mill.

I think Ben Revere from Lex went after being offered high 6 figures out of HS.

Kyle Cody to the twins at # 73. Looks like maybe Ka'ai Tom would be the next highest draft choice, but he would be a little later in the draft.

Saw that the #1 pick from last year couldn't come to terms with the Astros...had to have Tommy John and was re-drafted this year at #17. Maybe we can get some guys to hang around that way (minus Tommy John) [cheers]

I still don't understand why that kid didn't sign with Houston last year. He probably cost himself at least $3 million.

Houston offered him 6.5 mill, then they saw his MRI and reduced it to 3.1 (the minimum to receive a compensatory pick this year - #2 overall). Basically Houston lowballed and hoped that he wouldn't take the deal, so they could get this years #2.

Similarly, Mark Appel was picked 8th overall in 2012, but turned down the offers and didn't sign. Went back to Stanford for his senior year and then was picked 1st overall by Houston.

Speaking of which, Houston has been racking up talent in the draft lately.

Travis Blankenhorn is now off the board in the 3rd round, 80th overall, to the Twinkies. Another one bites the dust for the UK commitment class.

This great class that UK had is slowly winding down.
I'm not convinced it was ever a great class to begin with. Nothing I have read suggests any of our pitching commits will be drafted. I hate to say it but we're probably bringing in the least regarded class in the SEC.

I'd wait until what I head these players wanted/needed to be offered to write them off. Just doing a little reading and some guys demand to get a certain % over market value of that specific pick slot to sign...some guys might not like the team they were drafted too etc.

Who knows

If you're drafted in the first 10 rounds there's a 99% chance you will turn pro. Very rarely are high school kids drafted that high and don't sign.

Most of the time the MLB teams know what a kid is demanding for that round and that is why they are willing to take them so high. If a kid is demanding too much for where the team wants to draft them, even if it is number 1, then they will not risk them not signing and will draft them later on. Depending on how much a team wants the guy is how much he will fall. Sometimes teams will take players later on that they know are going to college and they will try to offer them more than what they would typically give someone for that draft position. The MLB draft and the signing process is all one giant an extremely interesting game. Even when they draft someone the drama isn't over.

Our class was very top heavy. Pretty similar to 2013 I think. 2013 had 3 amazing pitchers, but all 3 went pro. This one has 3 amazing lineup guys and it looks like at least 2 of the 3 are going pro at this time. After that there looks to possibly be a pretty big drop off. However, next year's class looks a lot more encouraging from top to bottom.

I know what you guys are saying...but there are quite a few cases that go the other way as well from what I can see. A ton of factors going into it - and the only factor we know of right now is draft spot.

Nicholas Shumpert was taken in the 7th round by the Detroit Tigers, number 220 overall. I would say that he is borderline to come to UK. He could play his way into a higher draft pick, but 7 is still pretty high. Will just depend on how much money he is demanding and if the Tigers are willing to pony that up.

We need a fluke/miracle and keep a couple of these guys. The team isn't super far away from being a tough out...yet if all these guys go + the jr draftees this team may be pretty rough.

I think this may bode well for UK, many said he would go in round 1 or 2. He could come to UK and play his way into a 1st round pick. K Tom was picked 2 rounds before him. I wonder where Kyle Barrett will go ?

Shumpert had some weird stats....600 ba (wow) .722 obp (wow) 5 HRs (meh) 14 RBIs (weird)...I understand he was likely the leadoff hitter which lowers the RBI total, but his teammates mustve been awful. 14 RBI and we know at least 5 were from dingers...maybe his walk totals would shed more light

KY Mr Baseball signed with TN (great!).....532 avg, 15 dingers and 55 RBIs...also pitched for a 2.0 ERA and 6-3 record

I don't pay much attention to high school home run numbers. Most of the top players are pitched around and don't see a pitch they can drive out of the park. Justin Upton only had 6 home runs his senior year and he's one of he better power hitters in the game.

Former Cat Casey Schroeder was drafted in the 8th round. He's good enough to be drafted that high but barely got off the bench his 1 year at Kentucky...

Another one went in the 13th round as well, Jeffery Boehm transferred out of UK and went to University of Illinois Chicago. He was the last pick of the 13th round to the Angels.

Just wanted to look at some things...

Louisville has 3 pitchers that are PG grade 10s. They throw 91, 92, and 93 respectively. They also have an outfielder that is a PG grade 10. They follow that up with 3 players with 9.5 grades. Despite having what looks like a whole lot of talent, not a single one of these players has been drafted as of the end of the 13th round.

Compare that to UK, who also has 4 players graded as 10s. 3 of those players went in the first 7 rounds and are almost 100 percent to go professional. The last one, Daniel Tilo, is still on the board.
So, it is very possible that Louisville will keep all 4 of their grade 10 players while UK is, at this point, only likely to keep 1, and I think that one is a very new commitment to UK.

Tennessee also has an extremely top heavy commitment class. They have 7 guys that are grade 10, and actually Neal is the lowest rated of all of them. So far it looks like 4 of the 7 have been drafted, and all of them in the first 10 rounds.

Interesting stats...Looks like UL has figured out the balance of high level recruits that don't quite hit the draft lotto. Getting commitments from a couple of the dudes we did was worthless...seems like the 7th rounder didn't even have to stop and think about his choice, and his daddy was a Cat.

Kyle Barrett goes in the 15th to the Marlins. Congrats to him considering he was not even drafted out of high school!

Now in the 22nd round and there has still not been a single Kentucky high school senior taken in the draft. Might be part of the reason that UK did not recruit KY very hard this year?

Louisville still has not had a single recruit drafted, at least not that I can tell.
