Starts tonight. A few UK players looking to get their names called

John Rhodes
Austin Schultz
Oraj Anu
Sean Harney

Those are at least the most likely ones, with the first two more likely than the last. I suppose that Mason Hazelwood could be on the list, but the injury he suffered makes it less likely. Others are eligible as well, Jake Plastiak, but also not as likely.

I think that list is about it as they did not promote anyone else all season…..well, Kessler but not until late. Haha

Wow Louisville's Henry Davis goes 1 overall.
Leiter goes #2 and Rocker #6. I read the article Derek Terry had up a week or so ago and he thought Rhodes may come back for another year. I guess we’ll see. I’m not sure Schultz will get what he wants out of the draft but I think he’s gone regardless.

Rocker went 10.

Rhodes and Schultz are both taking whatever money they can get IMO.

^ Was rumored for a while. Really good bat with excellent power and decent defensively with a live arm. 2-3 tool catchers are hard to come by.

Bring a Pirate fan, not really thrilled about the choice but they have done live arms and decent hitters in the minors so I understand it.

I had seen him top 3-5 but not 1 overall. So that surprised me.

UK commit Jackson Merrill selected in the first round by the Padres 27th overall.

So UK is ranked 34th overall prior to Merrill being drafted 1st round. So with him leaving that probably drops. Merrill was ranked by PG as the 94th best player. UK also has Travis Smith committed, he's the 85th best player, but I doubt we see him in 2022 considering he just had TJ surgery. That's scary because UK has had bad luck with guys returning from TJ if they have the surgery before arriving on campus.

After that UK has just one player inside the top 250 and just 2 others inside the top 500.

And UK is getting the old addage...
Keep doing what you always did, you keep getting what you always got. Pitiful. I like MB, but this was a HUGE mistake for UK baseball.
Mitch has just delayed the inevitable. Part of me thinks that next year will be it for Mingione then I look at history and think just making the SEC tournament is good enough for UK.

I think a major factor will be how the pitchers progress. UK did well in OOC play with our pitching, but in conference the ERA soared to over 6.00. That just isn't going to cut it. Still, we're getting almost all our starters back (presumably) and then we're adding 4 transfer arms, we should get back every sophomore that contributed as well. So if those guys progress we could see things get better and we could at least stay competitive in OOC.

That is a key to being competitive to me. Pitching is always, IMO, number one. It is in the pitching staff that UK retained the most talent. So, will they develop and grow on that, or will we see them continue to struggle against SEC hitters? If they continue to struggle then UK might be in a whole lot of trouble in 2022.

John Rhodes goes to the Baltimore Orioles early in the 3rd round. We can kiss him goodbye. Pick 76 overall.

Didn't really care for him and thought he was over-hyped, so not a big loss for me and I don't count, but Mingione might feel differently.

Hard to say, to be honest. I think his numbers in 2020 hyped him up and that they likely would have dropped in SEC play. However, that is a lot to live up to and I think that pressure got to him at times. He wasn't a bad player and has a really good arm in left. However, I think he was so hyped that the expectations were too much for him. Not sure what would have happened if he returned. Maybe he improves on the 2021 numbers, but even then, it seems like those expectations were so high that anything he did would almost be a disappointment. Losing him hurts UK for the experience and the fact that we have 0 outfielders.

I personally would take Schultz over Rhodes being as he at least has proven himself at hitting. IMO I don't think Rhodes has proven himself enough to warrant being drafted that high.

Don't think either of them will return. Rhodes has more upside. I don't think Schultz has enough room to grow in his body.

Schultz goes to Detroit in the 10th round. Pick 285.

Like I've said, I expect him to sign as well.

I saw some calling him "The best position player in the draft", Yet, Mat Nelson, The Catcher the Reds drafted #35 out of Florida State won both the Buster Posey award and the Johnny Bench award for the best Catcher in College Baseball. Hope it pans out that Nelson ends up being the better pick.

Davis hit .370 this past season with 9 doubles and 15 home runs. Runners tried to steal on him 15 times and were only successful twice. 2 errors

Nelson hit .330 with 17 doubles and 23 home runs. Runners tried to steal on him 22 times and were successful 7 times. 3 errors.

Pretty interesting look at the two.

Rumors flying around about a potential injury. All kinds of stuff going around. I guess we’ll see how it goes for him.

Yea, basically, the Mets claim he has an elbow injury and want to pay him less than the 6 million they initially promised. Rocker says there is no injury and wanted full 6 million.

So now he will go Indy or go overseas for a year and re-enter the draft.

Looks suspicious when he or his agent made the decision not to do the pre-draft MRI.
