Missouri at Kentucky (Friday)

UK and Missouri have a solid rivalry, so I'm excited this weekend. Stupp starts it right with a strikeout, a ground out to Estep at 2nd, and another swinging K.

Schultz goes oppo to start. Good piece of hitting. Just punches it to right for a single.

Anu with another good piece of hitting. Also just dumps one over second. This one goes to the gap and actually scores Schultz. 1-0 with Anu at 2nd.

Rhodes draws a full count walk. Great first inning so far to make this guy pitch and to get at run so far.

Collett also works a full count. 19 pitches, at least for this pitcher. Collett swung at ball four around his neck, but he fouled it off. Monster at bat. 10 pitches I believe that Collett has worked. He's not going down easy. Can't put anything past TJ, he's fouling off everything. 14 pitches. Hammered to center, but right at CF. Moves Anu up.

Harmon with a weak liner over 2nd to score Anu and send Rhodes to third. Runners at 1st and 2nd 1 out.

Estep with a sac fly to left to score a run and Church strikes out.

Great inning for UK. 3-0 going to the 2nd.

Stupp gets two quick grounders but then gives up a walk before getting a strikeout.

In the bottom half Kessler singled through the right side and Ritter bunted him over. It was a great bunt as it was at his face. Schultz then lines one through the right side as well and it gets Kessler to third. Schultz then stole second. Anu grounds barely past the second baseman and both Kessler and Schultz score. 5-0 Rhodes grounds out to third and they try to go for two. Umps call Anu out, but they are going to look at this... he definitely pulled his foot off the bag...

Collett lines one into right field gap for a double and UK goes up 7-0 as it scores both Rhodes and Anu.

Harmon grounds out to second, but advanced the runner.

Estep with a loud out as he gives one a ride, but it finds a glove on the warning track in right field.

RITTER!!! HOLY COW!!! RITTER GOES INTO THE HOLE ON HIS RIGHT AND BOUNCED ONE TO FIRST AND THEY CALL HIM OUT. THAT WAS A DEFENSIVE GEM!!!

They will look at it, but wow. He also got the first out. haha

Ugh... they say the runner beat it, and he did. So, it takes away the gem, but it was still a beauty. So, 1 out with a runner on first for Missouri.

Ground out to Church. Nice running pickup and throw out. Grounder to second and Collett screws up his position and puts Estep in a bad spot. Collett went to his right when he shouldn't have and confused Estep and he fell down and couldn't get the ball cleanly. Still, kept the ball in the infield and kept the run off the board. A grounder to second is easier this time and Estep underhands to end the Missouri frame.

7-0 going to the bottom half of the 3rd.

This is the kind of game hitting wise that I have wanted to see from UK. It is getting guys on base with hits and then hitting them in. 7 runs on 7 hits. They aren't relying on home runs to score them all and even aren't relying on mistakes made by the opponent. It is simply good hitting and that is great to see. I think this is much more reliable offense than power hitting, especially when it is often home run or strikeout.

Church is struggling some lately as he grounds out to short to start the bottom of the third. Kessler getting the start and he drives one right back to center for a single. Ritter strikes out swinging. Missouri pitcher already touching 70 pitches in this one. UK likely to see a lot of Missouri arms in this one. Schultz grounds out to short, they go the short route to second and get the FC to end the 3rd. UK doesn't score in this frame for the first time.

7-0 going to the 4th.

Anu is slow and is lucky that a relatively lazy fly into left doesn't get over his head and to the wall. It took a leaping grab for him to keep it from going over his head after he misplayed it. As it is, it's a leadoff double for Missouri. Stupp then gets a strikeout looking. Beautiful pitch at the knees. Again, back to back looking. This one at the letters. Great job to battle back and not let the leadoff double get the better of him. Chopper to Church and he can't get the pickup. Doubt that they give him an error there, would have been a tough play had he caught it cleanly. Stupp then gets a strikeout swinging. He's pumped about it.

7-0 going to the bottom of the 4th.

Great start for the Cats. I hope they keep hitting instead of resting. I've seen us give up too many runs over the years to feel comfortable even at 7-0.

Anu, one pitch, one swing and grounds out to second. Rhodes gets a good stick to it, but it hangs up in mid left-center for out two. Collett hits away from the shit and goes right where the SS would have been for a single. Harmon lines one into left for a single. Good back to back hits there. Estep pops up to short to end the 4th

7-0 going to the 5th.

Stupp at 60 pitches and he gets a ground out to third to begin the inning. 3-1 pitch is fouled away and no one could get to it. Probably should have been Collett's ball, but he was the furthers from it when it hit the ground. Church takes a slow grounder and makes a bang/bang play for the second out. Church is doing well at third, but needs to cut out the little double pump thing he has going on., it almost cost UK there. Stupp gets a swinging K to end the top of the 5th. 7 strikeouts for Stupp today.

7-0

Missouri going to a new pitcher. A lefty. Church up and he is just not seeing the ball that well. Fanned at two that were not close to the zone, were fastballs and Church wasn't that close to. Kessler with a good at bat again, draws a walk. Ball gets away from the Missouri catcher and Kessler breaks for second and takes forever to get there, but I think he is safe at second. Way closer than it should have been. Whew... I think he may actually be out, but I think it is probably too close to change. Tag was high, but I think Kessler popped up before he hit the bag and kind of popped into the tag. They do call him out after the review.

Ritter grounds to short and it gets under the legs of the defender. Schultz grounded to short and they got the easy way to get Ritter at second to end the inning.

7-0 going to the 6th.

Stupp still out there and he gets a line out to center. Estep gets a grounder to second and almost throws it away, but Collett does a good job bringing it in and keeping his foot on the bag. Stupp with his 8th strikeout to end the Missouri 6th.

7-0

Anu takes 4 straight low pitches for a walk. Rhodes struck out swinging on a pitch away. Collett facing the lefty he flies out to left for the second out. Harmon looked like he really got ahold of one, but the wind is really whipping in left and it goes for a shallow fly ball for the third out.

7-0 going to the 7th.

Like the 7 early runs, but the hitting has kind of dried up for UK in this one. Would have liked to see them really keep the pressure on Missouri and collect some more walks and hits.

That was close to a bad error on Estep. Collett is now a very passable first baseman. Wasn't sure I'd ever think that at the start of the year.

Yea, Collett is solid as a receiver at first, but probably not the best at fielding his position. Still, that is not something you're asked to do a ton at first, so it is not a huge worry.

Stupp back out again. Just at 80 pitches now. Starts with another strikeout, his 9th. Back to back strikeouts. Then a line drive right at Schultz. Credit to him for catching that one, but he didn't look too comfortable with it. Those line drives are the toughest... they seem to just keep rising on you at times and are hard to judge. Still, he brought it in.

Going to the bottom of the 7th, 7-0.

For some reason I thought we were going to the 8th, but just in the 7th. Had to edit and fix that.

Does Stupp come back in the 8th? He still looks pretty solid.

Don't see a lot of sense in sending him out for the 8th. Might as well either let two guys get 1 inning each, or give one guy both innings. I would think, on a cold night still somewhat early that you bring him out, but they might want to let him try for something which I'm not going to mention.

Estep quickly out to short. Church struggling this week. 0-5 against Murray State and now 0-4 today. Not what you want to see. Can the freshman settle in and hit the SEC pitching, or will he keep struggling? Kessler just keeps hitting 3-3 as he lines one over short. He is going to be needed for the rest of the year, so this is nice to see. Whew... Ritter gets a dying quail, but the Missouri right fielder bends down to shin high and back hands it out of the air to end the inning.

7-0 going to the 8th (for real this time).

Scores around the league:

Ugh... Estep takes an easy fly ball at second and it hits off the palm or heel of his glove and pops out for an error that allows the leadoff man to reach. That thing was can of corn and Estep just lost a bit of focus on it I guess.

Anu has had two chances today in the outfield and he has misplayed both of them. Both of them could and should have been outs, but he is so slow that he can't get to either of them. Very frustrating. So, runners at second and first with 0 outs. Cam Hill in the bullpen presumably warming up to come in on defense, probably for Anu after he hits in the 8th.

Stupp falls behind 3-0 before getting back to back strikes. He walks him. Roszel better be getting his butt out there. There he goes. Harper going to come in.

Cam Hill actually now coming into left. Surprised that Mingione did that prior to Anu hitting again.

Harper rocking a killer handlebar mustache, but he falls behind early 0-2 before blowing a fastball by the hitter. Back to back that were middle/middle fastballs that the hitter just didn't get the bat on. A third and there is a foul tip back. A fourth that is high and whiffed at. The last pitch a beauty.

A weak grounder to first goes for an out, but it scores a run. 7-1. Harper just keeps challenging with fastballs in the middle of the zone and they are just outright swinging through them. Off speed pitch gets a second strikeout for Harper

Going to the bottom of the 8th with UK leading 7-1

Agreed. Not a huge Harper fan but I hope to not see Ramsey pitch again at UK. I’m sure he’s a great kid but have never been a fan of his pitching.

Was a heck of a hitter coming out if HS / just have stayed with it.

I wonder just what the UK box score for the season would look like. Seems like we score the vast majority of our runs early and we struggle in the middle innings a lot.

Schultz strikes out looking on a fastball at the knees. Hill works a walk. Solid at bat for him coming off the bench. Hill easily steals second. Cam Hill affected the pitcher on that one as he just completely throws one 4 feet away from the catcher and no where close and he easily gets to third. Hill was dancing all over at second and really threw off the pitcher, he then walked Rhodes. Collett up and he draws a walk. Good at bat for him. Bases juiced for Harmon. New pitcher coming in for Missouri.

Harper was always just inconsistent, but this year he has been really solid.

Harmon draws a full count walk. That was a close pitch, but it worked. 8-1. Missouri pitching really struggling again. 3-0 against Estep and he takes a walk. 9-1. Church finally gets a base hit, this one past short, and Harmon tries to score from second, but he gets thrown out at home. 10-1. A bit too aggressive there by Coggins over at third.

Kessler also draws a walk to load the bases again. They come out to talk to the pitcher. Don't think anyone is warming up for Missouri.

Ritter puts a charge into one, but the deepest part of the field on a windy night and the ballpark keeps it. We go to the 9th with UK up 10-1.

Just 1 hit in that inning.

Seth Logue coming in to finish this one out. Logue had a rough outing recently (as I recall), so this is a good spot for him to see SEC hitter and get his confidence up.

Strikeout to start the 9th for Logue. He then gives up a walk. Runner stole second. Another walk. Fell behind early against both hitters. Got a long leash. He can work his way out of this. I think he just over throwing at this point. Needs a visit from Roszel to talk about it. As I type it, here he comes. Get out of my head, Dan!

Still fell behind 0-2, with a ball after the talk. Still, looked better and wasn't trying to power it up there on that one, then gets a strike. He isn't missing by much on some of these. 3-1 pitch right back up the middle on a line and that scores a run. 10-2, runners at the corners with 1 out.

Logue has the breaking ball working well, but the fastball just won't hit the spot. Full count and defensive indifference gives up a base. Rung him up with the breaking ball. Probably a bit high, but Logue gets the call and the 2nd out. He needs to do the opposite of Major League, 'Forget the heater, Sethy... throw him the curve ball!"
