Mississippi State sent out a release on Thursday showcasing the new floor for the Bulldog basketball team, not an uncommon occurrence for this time of the year.

And, for the most part, it’s a pretty standard court. It has MSU’s colors, the area inside the three-point line is a slightly different color than the rest of the floor, it has the #HailState hashtag and the MSU athletics website listed on the floor.

It’s all pretty normal.

Except for the fact that ‘StarkVegas’ is written on one baseline.

For those that don’t know, ‘StarkVegas’ is a nickname that has been given to the city of Starkville, Mississippi, where MSU is located, that isn’t necessarily a compliment. It was born out of rival fans mocking the city for how little it has in common with Las Vegas. There really isn’t all that much to do in Starkville beyond clanging cowbells with the locals. But over the last couple of years, the town and the school have embraced the insult as a nickname, an opportunity to brand themselves as something more than just another sleepy southern college town.

Which is why it is written on that end of the floor.

It conveniently sits directly in front of MSU’s student section.

Quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever seen a program promote. It was an insult to your dust town you idiots. I'm ready for their football program to die again. Clear case of little guy syndrome that found a bone.

We went to the UK/MSU game the year The Hump opened up, couldn't find anyplace open for dinner before the game except McDonald's. They were giving away game tickets for each Big Mac Meal purchased, always got a kick out of that.

I like it. Not the floor ( nothing special ) but the branding is a cool concept if they can grow their program.

My Uncle Bill Combs played for Miss St. in the early 70's. He was a 6'11 Center from London, Ky. Rupp recruited him but he said he wanted to leave home for college. Here's a box score where he scored 15 on the 8th ranked Cats at the time. He went on to play on the PGA tour briefly after college and has been a Golf pro in Valdosta, Ga. for years now.

Kind of a pet peeve - I can't stand when places advertise themselves in that way.

I know that it was started as a self-deprecating joke, but clearly the admin is using it seriously.

Lex Vegas, Stark Vegas, whatever. That's something that kids and idiot fratboys come up with.

Same with Chicago being second city or certain non-ivy league schools calling themselves "______ ivies". Vandy being the Harvard of the South.

It just looks weak and stupid. Be the best you, not an inferior version of something else.

To be fair, from all I hear, the best version of Starkville is still awful, but they don't need to rub salt in their own wound with this nonsense.

The floor looks pretty nice overall, but that "Starkvegas" thing is just stupid. I'm from Nicholasville and anytime anyone refers to it as "Nichvegas" I want to puke.

Memphis Tigers to brand themselves "lilchicago"after recent crime spike in both cities. Stay tuned.
