FIBA USA U19 Thread

Jasper in the game for 2 minutes before he touches the ball. Lot’s of one on one basketball. Mikel seems to be a drive/shoot first point. Not more than 1 pass per possession. I pound on Jasper sometimes. But, he isn’t getting any touches to speak of.

I love the Mikel Brown hype. The higher he flies, the farther he will fall when we bludgeon them to death in November.

Mikel Brown seems like he can get anywhere he wants on the court but has missed several easy layups and isn’t what I’d call a playmaker for others. Looks like a Cal PG. I admittedly haven’t watched much of his tape but he doesn’t seem to me to be the best PG in the country. Hard to judge in allstar game type setting though. Not much passing or teamwork. In my mind a JR Lowe > FR Brown in Nov.

Does FIBA count misses when fouled as an attempt?
Team USA shooting 26/72 from the field.
4/23 from 3.
41 free throw attempts.
This is an insult to game of basketball.
(No judgement on random collection of 18 year old players suffering jet lag playing overseas)

Pretty selfish play and you’re correct not good to watch.

Couple ball hogs for sure and why not use the bench?

Jasper is going to be special at Kentucky. The good news I believe is that he will be able to play both guard positions. We desperately need the depth as is, but by the time March comes, I see Jasper being a major contributor. He and JQ are the two I am most interested in seeing play outside of OO.

Then you'll be missing Kam Williams. He's gonna be star on both ends.

Then you should see Crowe . He makes Brown look like a true , team running point guard .

Who did Tommy Lloyd blackmail in order to coach this roster? He's a 2nd tier coach and always looks like he's just downed a box of Krispy Kreme glazed donuts.
I think he’s a solid coach, they played really well. He hasn’t had the postseason success quiet yet but he did make the sweet 16 last year. They gave Duke a great game too. I think he will be good overall. With all the retirees lately he’s moving up the ladder.

The main thing I'm thinking after reading all the posts on here is how loaded we are and certain talented players may not get a ton of PT. Pope does rotate well, but he's also about locking in his starting five of who he thinks are the five best players at their position. I'm really curious to see who Pope's starting five choices are.

Johnson with 19 minutes played today against France, 4 points on 1 or 4 shooting. Had a steal and couple assists. Brown for Louisville had 24 points today leading Team USA.

I think BYU will be dangerous this year. The returned a lot and killed the portal.
Yup and if we have to play them it will be a one game matchup in the tourney. That can go to either team. They have to play us as well. Would be a good game and probably should be a final 4 type of game.

AJ Dybantsa and BYU basically this years version of VJ Edgecombe and Baylor.
I don’t see it.

BYU returns Saunders, who led them to the Seeet Sixteen this past season. He’s the real deal. He can shoot, handle. pass, and score on offense and is a decent defender. He’s a typical BYU Senior, in that he is older than most Seniors, having done his two year mission before college. To me, he’s what we hope Chandler will be in two more years.

I really wish he would have followed Pope here. He would be an excellent sidekick for Oweh.

Also, they have Keita, who is a strong inside player. He is very strong and phyiscal and can pass.

Now, I am not big on their PG (Wright- a transfer from Baylor), but I think Young sees something I don’t, and that dude can coach. But even with a mediocre PG, I think they are going to be very good.

The final piece to a very good starting five is Barker. Baker is a sixth year Senior. He missed all but 4 games of his Junior year and was granted a medical redshirt. He is one of the last COVID Seniors (like Kriisa) because of this. Baker is a good shooter at SG. He shoots 38% from 3 and just over half his shots are from 3. He’s should get lots of wide open shots as defenses focus on Dybantsa, Saunders, Wright, and Keita.

Overall, if Wright is at least serviceable, that is one heck of a starting five.

Saunders is the engine that drives them. He’s the heart and soul of that team and he took a team with mediocre talent to the Sweet Sixteen last season. I think they will achieve at least that again. They will get a higher seed and have upgraded their talent for this season. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make their first Final Four appearance in school history.

Jasper does not play with the same intensity as the guys on his team. He is passive on both ends, He does not stay on his man, floats around on defense, he is a little better on the offensive end but not much more. Not sure if this is by design or if he is making sure he does not get hurt.

kinda cool how they are using the player tracking to show who has the ball. almost as cool as the hockey puck trail.

i love what i'm seeing from jasper, little cockiness, and agree with other posters that he needs to reel it in. lloyd coached him well after the bad glass pass.
