Mikel Horton

At 6'1" 226lbs I wonder what kind of fullback he could develop in to. I know the NFL doesn't use many
fb's but once you establish yourself as a good one you seem to keep a job.

Alabama has a Soph RB that is 6-3 242. I wonder if he would make a good FB?

Baker had an incredible block on that TD. And, I think Horton hurt the safety that tried to tackle him. Looked almost one the kid had a stinger that impacted one side.

I think you're right and he did hurt the DB on the play. My seats are in the west endzone and at first I thought the DB gave a chickensh!t effort on the tackle. Looked like he curled up trying to "trip" MH but I think it was more of MH running him over. Even with the hoopla of the TD celebration, I think I remember the DB was pretty slow to get up.

Theyre absolutely different backs. But I often see people post "best back since Pinner" when we had at least 2 excellent RB's since him.

I think Boom is similar to a bigger Locke - alot of straightline speed and gone in a second. Little was much shiftier, and was almost impossible for a defender to tackle 1 on 1. But lacked the blazing speed of Boom, Locke, or Smith.
Boom does not have locke speed. Thats one thing were missing is a guy that has that elite track speed. Boom is fast, just not locke fast. Would be nice if king had that extra step

Sure. I wasn't really trying to be argumentative, just making the point that Horton is the first back of his kind and quality since Pinner, and before him, Moe Williams. Yes, I see Horton as being potentially equal to those guys, in terms of style of play and ability.

It is odd that people seem to have largely forgotten what an outstanding all-purpose back Little was. But for his Senior Bowl injury, I think he would have enjoyed a long professional career, and I would like to hear that he is doing well somewhere at something.

Agree. Didnt he even tear an ACL or something in an all star game? He made the Titans roster for a season, maybe two I think.
The Titans carried him for like a season and perhaps a half hoping to rehab him and find themselves with a real bargain, but he never really successfully rehabbed as near as I could tell. He did "get paid" a bit, but nothing like his second contract was going to look if he had successfully rehabbed.

Gotcha. Totally agree.

I was thinking that, but wasn't sure. Thanks for the info.

What a dumb thing to say, Locke ran a 4.40, Boom has been clocked at sub-4.4 on every forty we've ever seen posted.

I think you are right. He was slow to get up and get off the field. May have been hurt pride, but it looked physical.

Bounced it outside quickly, excellent blocking, and to finish it off, Horton guarded the ball, lowered his pads, and trucked the defender. Last year, he wouldn't have done any of those things. He would have heptathlon the ball in danger and stayed high. Excellent improvements.
That sounds like a lot of athlons.

Do any of your opinions originate from anything but subjective stats that you can spin? You must be one heck of a Fantasy football player!..but If you think boom is faster than Locke was, on the football field, in pads, you either have very poor judgement, or a terrible memory! And that is no indictment of Boom...locke was just that fast! He had world class sprinter speed and it showed.

Locke ran 4.2x 40s - he originally came here is a track guy. If he's not the fastest player we ever had he is definitely top 2 or 3.

Locke was one of the fastest players I have ever seen at UK.

**Agree with the earlier poster concerning Horton's burst. His speed to to the line/hole is still a concern. I'm hoping he shows otherwise in the coming games, but it appeared to still be an issue in limited action vs ULL.

**Little was an elite college RB. I'd trade our current stable of backs right now for a healthy RL. Not meant as a knock on our current RBs at all, but a compliment to how good Little was.

**Locke speed > Boom's speed

I'm basing that "opinion" on this:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2011/profiles/derrick-locke?id=2495305

Now, I may not have world class IQ, and I may not have been the greatest in my mathematics courses back in college, but his NFL draft combine profile, on an official NFL site, says he ran a 4.4 forty. Not a 4.2, not a 4.3, a 4.4.
Now, my basic math comprehension is telling me that 4.40 is .02 seconds slower than 4.38, but what do I know, right?
Tell me about my terrible memory, should I trust your eyes (or mine, for that matter, because I believe he was very fast, I agree, I thought he had ridiculous speed), or do I trust a laser time that was done at the NFL combine, and posted to their official website?
So tell me, tool, what subjective stat did I spin just now? Oh, and for the record, I've never played fantasy football in my life, and I don't intend to. Not sure how that's even remotely applicable to this.

Well, if you know much about football, you know that A) clocked times are generally not accurate, especially at the collegiate level...and b) even an accurately clocked combine time does not translate into football speed on the actual field when wearing pads. Locke was about a step and a half faster than Boom on the field. If you can't see that, I'm sorry. Go back and watch some tape buddy.

Now this, I do agree with. I think Locke simply had better quickness and burst than Boom. Football speed is based more on acceleration and quickness than it is straight line, breakaway speed, and I think that's where Locke had his advantage. That initial burst (which is harped at religiously in short distance track) is probably what made you feel that his straight line speed is better, but all we can go off of right now are the 2 official forty times. Over forty yards, I have to say that Boom is faster because those are the numbers put in front of us, but it's not all that frequent that you're seeing a RB run it for forty yards.
Football speed is certainly different though. I have to assume that he would only be a step and a half ahead for the first 15 yards, until proven otherwise.

boom ran an 11.07 soph year in the state 100m championship and it was not his best time.... but that was the best laser time we have. he did beat the 7th fastest guy in the country but it was hand timed. locke ran a 10.6 as his all time best time. i'd say we are splitting hairs arguing about who's "faster".

back to horton. he ran a 4.62 40 and he's improved his speed and flexibility since arriving on campus. he's not a 4.4 guy and if that is what you want then so be it. he is fast enough to beat most lb'ers and he's big enough to level most db's. he's gonna carry the rock a lot the next 3 years so get used to having a guy that isn't nick chubb fast at rb.... he's faster than storm johnson, silas redd, carlos hyde, montee ball, and he's right there with marcus lattimore.

He's gotta run mean and nasty. He has to lower his pads, initiate contact and plow like a Clydesdale.

That's what will best suit his talents.

Locke was one of the fastest players I have ever seen at UK.
Locke was faster that Boom...but why would we put Locke ahead of Boom overall as a RB?

- Locke, as is typical for short speedsters, usually went down on first contact. And was very limited running between the tackles.
- Boom, while not a pile mover like Pinner was at times, actually runs thru tackles at a respectable rate. Re-watch the UL and UGA games down the stretch last year...he runs thru arm tackles and once he gets an opening...bye-bye

I'm not sure the speed differential in Boom vs. Locke is all that meaningful...once either can get to a corner they turn 2 yard runs into 13 yard runs pretty easily and once both have an open field ahead of them...rarely do they get caught from an angle/behind. But to compare Boom vs. Locke in running thru tackles/going down on contact...it really isn't close. Locke was rather easy to bring down...Boom is at least average in that category.

One of the national recruiting analysts (want to say Mike Farrell) was quoted saying that he thought Horton had the best footwork of any back in the class. That it was rare to see a guy of his size be so skilled with their feet. I think Horton could ultimately be a better pro prospect than Boom because he is more of an every down back. I think Korem will greatly improve his explosiveness out of the blocks as well.

In this offense I think Boom will have better stats but he is more of a niche player at the NFL level. I know most only care what they accomplish here but it is important that we have players that are drafted high and are successful in the league. It will only help to recruit the position in the future. I don't think there's much of a difference in their talent. It boils down to preference because their styles are very different

Boom could certainly be a featured back in the NFL...see these guys

Dion Lewis

Lesean McCoy (I think it's reasonable to think Boom can gain 10 lbs)
http://www.nfl.com/player/leseanmccoy/79607/profile

Andre Ellington
http://www.nfl.com/player/andreellington/2539217/profile

Chris Johnson (he isn't now, but he wasn't any bigger w/the Titans)
http://www.nfl.com/player/chrisjohnson/262/profile

Ameer Abdullah (still yet to be determined, but he was decent in college)
http://www.nfl.com/player/ameerabdullah/2552374/profile

I recognize this list isn't the majority of college backs, but it certainly proves Boom could become more than just a 3rd down back.

Horton is the thunder to Boom's lightning.
I don't think one should be the "feature back" over the other. It's fun to see these two guys and what they bring to the table as it is pretty diverse. Boom is gone before you can bat your eyes and Horton can flat run over people.
If the O-Line can play decent, these two guys are good enough to carry this team. Mix in JoJo Kemp and we have a solid stable of RBs, something much needed in the SECConference.

What did you think of his run when UK had its back to the goal line?

While Locke was very fast but most times he was too fast. I don't know if it was his lack of vision or his lack of patience but I can't count the number of times he would take the hand off and explode full speed into the back of one or two of his O-linemen. Of course when he did happen to hit a hole he was through it in a flash.

Horton does have excellent feet for a big back much like Jerome Bettis. Boom has all the attributes you want in a back but I wish he was a bit bigger.

Derrick Homer was a beast for us. He needs to be included as one of the UK RBs that punished tacklers regularly throughout the SEC. Horton is not up to their level yet. I like Horton's physicality.
