It's probably because he was barely eligible after last semester so they want him to stay on campus and study instead of traveling. Weird but it does make a bit of sense.

I’m no Michigan or Howard fan but this is probably what is actually going on. Traveling for sports means missing class time as well as a difficult study environment. Hopefully this is to get the kid to focus on academics.
