He hired Joker, Billy G, and Elzy…..also gave Cal and Stoops ridiculous contracts. Genius is not how I would describe Mitch.

The 0 tourney wins is what impressed me most.
It's a decent hire. Obviously not a home run hire. He made BYU relevant. Gotta recruit though.

I won’t proclaim Pope a failure (if he’s our guy) until he actually fails. Not my top pick, but I’ll support him if the job is his until he shows me why I shouldn’t. And with the budget he hopefully has, he can get a great staff that can bolster recruiting and attract some great transfers. And the guy 100% knows what UK bball means to the fans, which is something Cal simply ignored the last decade of his tenure here.
He’s not my first (or fifth) choice, but if he’s the guy I’ll hope like hell he succeeds.

I’m over the shock and I’m fine with it now. He will be better than Cal. We don’t need the flashy 5 stars, Hurley has proven that. We have to win the portal and money talks. The Kentucky exposure will get us players plus Pope is one of the nicest humans alive. This could be our version of Hurley.
AD of the year in 2019 and nominated several other times, UK athletics overall has been a regular top 20 program in the rankings in the last 10 years so yeah he’s pretty good at it.
He could get lucky doesn't change the fact that Pope is unqualified for the job at this moment. This reeks of panic and following UNC and Duke.
I'm not a fan of this hire at all but I'm not sure if you understand how hard it is to recruit at BYU. Their Honor Code would turn away most players immediately

He played in more FF and NC games than Cal ever did.
Which makes it even more impressive is that in 2019-20 he finished ranked AP #20, 2020-21 finished AP ranked 23, 2021-22 was as high as 12th in the AP, 2022-23 was as high as 12 in the AP, and 2023-24 was as high as 12 in the AP. Tells me the man can coach with less talent

I am no Mitch fan he gave Cal a lifetime contract, but saying that Pope might be a good hire he was recommended by Pitino and played under him so we need to welcome coach Pope back to Ky.
