Yeah, Leach ran off a long list of accomplishments Stoops has already done here. Really thing with Levis first and now Leary, Stoops has a good chance to start that string of great QB's that I think would close that gap a lot more with the very top programs. Our defense from year to year and now the skill players on offense they are recruiting and getting, the program looks to be on the rise even more.
Agree 100%. With a defensive background, it is only natural that Stoops has been able to build an elite defense first. Is UK's defense really "elite" now? Some people, stuck in the past, might say no. But I say yes, our defense has become elite. Why? In 2022 we were #12 in the nation in total defense, just behind GA (#10) but ahead of AL (#13) and OH St (#14). That is remarkable. And we were #11 in the nation in scoring defense, just behind AL but well ahead of Clemson, OH St, TX, LSU, TN, and ND. Ranked schools have been trying to hire away our DC Brad White. Last year, LSU offered Coach White their DC job at $2 million a year but White turned them down. Stoops and White have built a defensive culture at UK that has attracted players like Bully McCall, JJ Weaver, Deone Walker, JQ Hardaway, Kendrick Gilbert, Grant Godfrey, and Avery Stuart. Now we are already getting visits from high upside 2024 defenders like Brian Robinson, James Nesta, and Koy Beasley.
Then, what about our offense? It is not elite. We know that. So, what needs to be done? First, Stoops has to stabilize the OC position. Liam Coen, Stoops' candidate of choice, recently signed a multiyear contract and is saying all of the right things. We know Coen can coach. As importantly, Coen probably has more upside than any of Stoops former OCs for recruiting SEC caliber QBs and WRs. Coen brought Will Levis here through the transfer portal and also had a big impact on recruitments of Dane Key and Barion Brown. So Coen is a stabilizing force. Then, Stoops and Coen need to get a couple of young high upside QBs on campus. UK's BBW OL needs to be retooled, which is in progress now. Getting that right is a fundamental necessity because everything begins upfront offensively. Of course, Coach Coen will have to turn UK's offensive roster over to finish the job of restocking with young players who fit his system. This will require a couple of classes, but improvement should be evident each year. How good can it get for Coen at UK? I think that just depends on how long he wants to stay. If Sean McVay likes Coen, then so do I. I am confident Mitch Barnhart will do what is neccessary to give Coen every reason to stay at UK. Winning begets winning, and Coen is already making a lot of money in Lexington.
