Mark Pope says Kentucky fans' conflicted emotions over John Calipari's return are "so perfectly understandable" in this unaired clip from Vice's docus

Speaking only for myself, I in no way, shape, or form felt conflicted. If I was at the game, I would have stood and applauded Cal.

When the game started, it's all about the Cats winning. Doesn't matter to me who is coaching on the other sideline.

I moved on a long time ago.

I wasn’t conflicted in no way. If he never steps in Rupp again I’ll die a happy man. He tried to destroy what I love and was a narcissist about it. He can EAD. Ask me again in 15 years maybe he can sit in the nose bleed section. I have moved on and glad we got the first game over with maybe it won’t be such a big deal now. But he’s a narcissist and an asshole.

Edit: I think Pope had a nice political type answer but most of the conflict he is referring to was from Cal taking care of his boys and not representing the University and if Pope was honest he would have said that. However I understand why he didn’t as well

pretty much my feelings exactly, agree 100%

To me Pitino and Calipari situations are in no way similar. One left for the nba and it was totally understandable at the time and he’s said many times it was a mistake. Cal man I will always feel that everything that’s happened the last 5 years he just brought on himself. It’s probably ego but even if it’s not just the refusal to bend or change his strategy or philosophy soured everyone. I know even for myself that the older you get the harder it is to change but with everything he had at his disposal to adopt a new or different philosophy when it became pretty obvious it wasn’t working anymore… Of course we will have disappointments in the future but I feel like I can rest easy because we are in the best hands we could be in with someone who has the teams, fans, and states best interests in mind. Sure there is still a lot to prove with becoming better defensively and top flight recruiting, two of the things Pope hasn’t been known for in the past. With Cal u never felt like he was flexible I feel like Pope would change anything if he thought we would be more successful.

That was the perfect PR comment. I boo’d Rick at Louisville and pulled against them every game. Once he left I was over my strong feelings about him and I accepted his decision to support the program that helped make him. I think the same thing will happen with Cal. He only wins 1 Championship and it’s with us, so he will hook back up to UK at the end of his career and we will give him the respect he deserves and hang his name in the glorious banners right beside #9 and #10 Championship banners. While I agree, I think his name hanging up there maybe be as a tribute someday to him. It really depends how he handles BBN going forward. If he and his boys continue to make cracks at BBN it’s gonna be a looooong time before people can stomach seeing his name up there. If he pays homage to the University when he gets his chances to, it would go a long way. I think people wanna see him respect the name on the front to get closure enough to honor him, someday.
