Mark Pope, Kentucky in holding pattern until House settlement on April 7

Why aren't other schools in holding pattern? Sounds like "damage control" to me.
Either compliance department or AD. We’ve heard the same thing over the years with regards to football and I believe Cal even brought it up once. UK is incredibly accurate and by the book, perhaps given the target we carry that’s not a bad thing.

More KSR writer attempt at damage control by taking what he said out of context to write a headline.

He didn’t say we were in a holding pattern as far as adding new players. He said it as far as adding a GM and having more defined job roles.
Glad to see that Pope wants to add a general manager. Something that should have been done much earlier.
I hope he can get someone that can raise a ton of $ for basketball. Would be nice if they ties with UK, but they must get
someone that will play the marketing game and get UK's name & brand on the front page. Mike Pratt would have been
perfect for this. He loved UK, the program and the fans. He would have wanted to make sure that UK remained #1.

I really think mitch needs to go he detest nil our football program is a disaster and he is just not the man to implement these changes needed to keep us competitive. We need innovative thinkers not old has beens set in their ways .

Per KSR
In the current Wild Wild West of recruiting, transparency and guardrails are coming — assuming the settlement is approved, as expected. Until then, though, Mark Pope feels his hands are tied in some areas no matter how strong a feel he has for what’s coming.
That’s impacting a lot of his day-to-day in terms of roster management and the NIL hurdles that pop up in every discussion. We’ll start big-picture and Pope’s desire to add a general manager, the way other high-profile programs have to navigate what has become free agency in college basketball with incoming and outgoing pieces while battling the draft and high school targets.
They’re recruiting now, but much-needed clarity is potentially a week away.

“We were deep in the portal last week, we will be this week and for the next weeks and months to come,” he said. “There’s even more chaos because this settlement is pending out there and that’ll change the way we’re allowed to work in the portal. There’s chaos and uncertainty and all the things.

Grow a spine Pope and do what all the other programs are doing that we aren't!

No one’s living or dying with each recruitment. It’s the aggregate of all the players pope has gone hard for and whiffed. Our main targets seem to be two bigs that are rated 25 and 30 in the portal rankings. We’ve learned with tubby that you’re not winning anything with those mid talented guys.
Do you really want to play the player ranking game?

Walter Clayton Jr was ranked 69. Sears was ranked 20. Baker-Mazara was at a juco school before Auburn. Chris Youngblood was ranked 79. Denver Jones was ranked 41.

Dickenson was ranked 1, how'd that turn out? Garrison was ranked 20 last year and Amari 84, who was better this year?

These rankings are all meaningless. Just wait to see what the final roster looks like before you all start panicking. I think Pope proved this year he can put a roster together.

I would like to be taking Pope's words the way @bthaunert is interpreting them. Throughout most of what he's quoted as saying here, there is room to do that, as he doesn't get real specific and he does say they plan on waiting and seeing, "in terms of that," without ever elaborating on how he means, "in terms of that." In general it seems like there is room to think he meant they will be waiting and seeing what the ultimate resolution of the lawsuit will be, without indicating that will be affecting their behavior as far as offering portal kids.

HOWEVER, towards the end of the article, when Pope's summarizing things, in summary he talks about this whole business as, "It’s actually a beautiful way to filter the guys that are dying to be here and do this." Direct quote. I don't see how that can possibly mean anything besides it's slowed us down in terms of actually offering kids, or at least in terms of actually offering them the most we might otherwise be willing to pay them.

Only going off Pope's words, as a careful reader I'm inclined to think the correct interpretation is closer to what @crxohio is reading.
I'm not skipping over the article as a whole. I'm looking at each section of article with a optimistic eye. No damn reason to even talk like this to public. What is the gain? Is all I am getting at. Damage control. Or not.

Man all these Cal holdovers clogging up the board with doom and gloom. Why don't yall head on over to the Arkansas board and see how the chicken man is doing in the portal...
You wouldn't know a Cal holdover if it hit you in the forehead, but you sure do like changing usernames on here.

Pretty much the way I see it. Although having hung out with Pope a few times back in the day, that’s a seriously no-filter dude. Doesn’t necessarily need a why.

I would love to see Nazr Mohammed get the role. I'm not sure he would take it as he's working his way up as an executive in the NBA, but he would be perfect. He and Pope have a relationship as teammates at UK. He's a very smart guy and and has been an NBA scout and is now the Director of Team Personnel with the Thunder.

There’s a portion of the fan base that likes to win championships on paper. They’re only happy when recruiting is over and summer workouts begin.

Here’s something scary and sobering for all of us to realize where we are at now and what it’s going to take to be competitive nationally

Kentucky has always had "Dark Money". Don't kid yourselves. The fact is Barnhart had a hard on against Calipari and this put the basketball program behind in many ways which forced the "Dark Money" to be allocated to different things that usually aren't needed at a place like Kentucky. Not liking Calipari as a HC anymore is fine--thinking he was 100% incorrect in what he was saying at the end of his tenure because you didn't want him as a HC is also incorrect.

Pope has some assets available to him he's choosing not to utilize right now and that's his choice. He's also having to start behind because of "Mad Mitch" who decided to side up with Mark Stoops in a disaster of an offseason where 80% of what Calipari said was correct and those 2 decided to run their mouths despite knowing Stoops can't back up half of what he was spewing. Once Calipari left, Stoops was exposed for looking like the spoiled brat last yr and now Pope is "Mad Mitch" guy.

The #1 thing to get cleared up from what I've been told-a consensus on what the staff thinks of a player. The HS recruiting of Cenac/Wilson/Ament was a cluster ****. When you have a guy from MN sharing with you Caleb Wilson will be going to the highest bidder and not likely for UK in the Spring/Summer--and then UK goes all in on him--and then fades because he in fact went to the highest bidder---it's a horrible look for the program. Didn't invest time in Cenac who had a relationship with Alvin Brooks and was interested and Ament was case of being half assed and now you have seen the "we're in/we're out" dance with him too. Time to get that straightened out. To the sensitive bunch who thinks any criticism means I don't like Coach Pope or his Staff or think he can win here-that's total bull****. It's just stating an area that needs to be figured out so this doesn't repeat itself. The way roster construction moves in the Portal, you have to have consensus on a player and commit to them whether someone who is more talented enters a day later or not. Same with HS recruiting--know tomorrow's news yesterday.

This article is honestly just a whole lot of nothing. Duke has rich ass finance people funding their NIL so they don't need a collective like a lot of other schools. And their NIL isn't public information because NIL isn't public...like at every other school.

Was that just something made up last spring when it was said that Mark Fox was going to be the GM?

The fans know NOTHING about what is going on behind the scenes right now.Mark Pope is under ZERO obligation to tell us ANYTHING until HE deems it appropriate to do so. He is trying to do his job right now and doesn't have the time or inclination To placate a small group of fans who have the frustration tolerance of a 2 year old. Why don't you idiots WAIT,and see how this shakes out and then make an informed assessment of where we are

No reason to be in a holding pattern April 7th is not going to change anything about NIL. EDIT They already said you can't limit the amount a player can make and in no way can you actually put a $ figure to a players worth.
It could/will change the amount of money you have to spend because of profit sharing, and probably add back pay to past players.

Like other posters have said nobody knows anything about what is going on behind the scenes more than likely not many players announcing yet waiting on a better offer and/or waiting on teams to start signing to see if they think they will get the playing time.

EDIT AGAIN For Louie they probably paid what the player were asking for so they signed.

I am amazed at just how much smarter message-board would-be ADs and coaches think they are than those who have all of the information (inside and outside the program) that is needed to make informed decisions. We seem to rarely ever agree with any decisions made by the folks who are paid to make those decisions. Why would Pope decide to make dumb decisions for the sake of dumb decision when it should be obvious to all that dumb decision making doesn't benefit him at all. We only have state and university pride on the line for our armchair decision making. Pope has far more reasons to be as aggressive in the portal as possible. I challenge anyone to provide proof that Pope is avoiding going after top portal players because he is just too stupid to realize that is what's needed.

I haven't heard anyone say he isn't going after top players just that he hasn't landed them at this point.

Why would he go after portal players if he isn't serious about landing them? I am sure that he finds no pleasure in headlines stating that he lost player x to university y. It is for certain that he is dealing with things that most of us have no real knowledge of. Obviously, he is trying to spend whatever budget he has as wisely as possible. At some point we will learn to trust our decision makers until we have concrete reason to not trust them.

Judge our team when we have a full team… it’s like the posters posting season over at halftime of game 13… All things u have to consider roster turned out great last year as did the overall season. Gonna be a few months before we have a full roster then you can critique away until the season starts. If you read something that didn’t come from a player or a coach it’s just speculation but every word gets ran with. We have no money! Pope doesn’t understand we need players! So and so followed one coach but not ours! Let it play out we have no control or say in any of this

Ksr has had some incredibly retarded narratives, including the one where Kentucky was waiting for Braden Smith to enter the portal.
Exactly….it’s bull crap that they act like a news organization in every way EXCEPT for adhering to journalistic principles. And then when they spread rumors get people excited and filled with expectations that die when their reporting is wrong they hide behind “we aren’t journalists, we don’t have journalism degrees. Don’t hold us accountable in any way.”

Wild stuff. Seems like we have a real problem at the top of the organization

We’re talking about people who have hundreds of millions and possibly billions at their disposal plus countless connections in the worlds of finance, politics and tech

This is not the same as Joe Riley down at his Ford Dealership putting a 100k in cash in a duffle bag to hand off to Uncle Ray Ray.

Those who are complaining are the ones who have Cal withdrawal. If we had won the NC, these same folks would still find something to accuse Pope of not doing well.

I’m somewhat of an expert on “spin” and this is spin.

Whether you or I like it or not you have to control the narrative and yes things like “optics” matter.

It’s too early for anyone to go crazy and shout doom and gloom but there are concerning things developing and a negative narrative is developing.
Experts on spin are liars. Spin is about lying to get your story published. Thats why If people are smart, they would not believe anything on any site. Way to many Chicken Little, Attention Seekers and just plain those who need attention. uK gets who it get for who Mark Pope thinks will win. End of story.
